I love the North Speedster. They only should've replace the cross screws for Allen screws. I've replaced all of them so I only need an Allen screw tool.
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
Thats a great idea Patrick, I'll mention it to them, I wonder if the philips head offers less resistance than the larger allen key hole? the larger bolts that take the allen key take more pressure and could be rounded off, but the smaller screws on the wings have less pressure to be inserted so can utilise a philips head, that's just my first thought, could be wrong!
@patricknikola_6 жыл бұрын
David Ursell I found it quite hard to screw in the Philips head actually. Couldn’t even get them in all the way and the metal of the Philips screw was actually bending because of the high pressure I had to put on it. That was one of the reasons for me to replace them also.

How good a kiteboarder does one have to be to consider learning to foil since foiling is, in theory, a different kettle of fish ?

Should be competent with a kite.. the better on the board you are the easier it is especially if you ride strapless surf boards. Book a lesson and we'll show you how it's done the easy way.. Or get a helmet.. like a really big helmet

What kite size do you recommend for the standard 80kg guy? I've heard that once you get going you don't need a very big kite, and a 12M North Mono would be enough. You guys look a bit under 80kg and were on a 15M. What do you think? Were you overpowered? Would a beginner get overpowered around 10-15 kts with a 15M? 12M too small? Thanks!
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
Hi Omnes, I'm 87 Kg - Really big bones! but I'm happy you think I'm sub 80 haha. Whilst you are correct that you don't need much power when you are riding a foil at the start it's much easier to have around the power you'd be comfortable (not overpowered) with on a twin tip board. We were riding in light winds from abuot 5-9kts, If I had 10-15 then a 12m Mono for 80Kg should be about right. The 15m is INCREDIBLE in light wind however 17kts and over it would start to get a little harder to handle as you may be depowering and the sale will flap a little causing the turning to be less responsive. If you have another kite that would handle 15kts and above I'd highly recommend the 15m Mono. if you're getting one kite then a 12m Mono would be a great bet and handle higher winds better. If you're based in the UK we can advise where to get the kite too, Fluid lines is our local shop and can source any of the kites asap.
@omnesomnibus28456 жыл бұрын
No problem David! For a higher price I can also say that you look 5 years younger and should try out for the olympics ;^). I actually have the 12m Mono, but seeing how great you guys got on with the 15m I thought I might have made the wrong choice! I would consider getting the 15m Mono as well to cover the lighter winds, and potentially if I want to go on the twin-tip in lighter winds too. But I'll have to save up a bit for that. I had wanted to get the Cabrinha Contra for twin-tip, but it seems like the Mono is a better bet for light winds, either for twin-tip or for foil. I'm based in the US I'm afraid, but there seem to be a few options for kite buying here. Maybe I'll make it across the pond though at some point.
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
Omnes Omnibus I know it's more expensive but you might consider the 18 metre dyno as an ultra light wind kites to go alongside the 12m. The 15m would do well but the 18 would get you out with a little bit more grunt in the light wind. However once you're practiced the 15m Mono would be nearly as good except at high speeds so if you're going to race get the dyno
@omnesomnibus28456 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting - it's a pretty big jump from 12 to 18. You don't think an 18 would be too much power for a foil? It seems like it be a great light wind size for using a twintip. Would I have a gap between the kites though? I'm definitely not doing any racing in the foreseeable future. I'm still just an advanced beginner becoming an intermediate. I want to get out and have fun, and get experience, but the wind is generally too light here (part of the reason for wanting to foil). I don't want to be skunked. Also why do you prefer an 18m Dyno as opposed to another kite, like a 17m Juice, or Slingshot Turbine or Cabrinha Contra, or another kite? The Mono was suggested as being a good kite for both foiling and twintip, great in low winds, and very easy relaunch.

I'm 85kg (13 stone) and did most of my learning on a 7m Drifter in an "ideal" 14-16kts. With a bit of skills I was on the 5m Drifter when it got to over 18kts (sometimes with 5m line extensions to get a bit of oomph at takeoff. I had a 10m single strut, but its wind window was so small at 12kts-15kts I found it difficult to justify. Could be OK if you have consistent winds at that strength - ours ramp up too quickly. Hardly ever used a 9m LEI, but I'm now getting a 9m foil kite (Hyperlink) and will use the 9m LEI for the surf.

Does it jump well? You get some good air in your other videos - was wondering if either combination was better than the other for big air?
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
I've been jumping a little on both foils but not enough to really get a feel for the difference, I'd be willing to say the GT foil will jump higher as you can hold down more power and release at a higher speed easier with the right timing, however the speedster combo may be a little easier to start out as the speeds will be lower and you'll have a bit more time to think about the situation... I've been foiling strapless for the last few months on the free foil and just front straps on the pro foil, but I'll be sure to "strap on" and get jumping next time and see what happens, check out our Instagram feed too as we post a lot of shorter videos on their and I might post a little clip of jumping if I do get round to it soon!

How are you mounting your camera? When I use a line mount on 5 line North kites it sits waaaay far away from me due to the high V.
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, I use a 2018 Click bar and remove the high V split device so the lines split is only just above the bar. I use a Camrig with Gopro 6 and you have to add the 5th line so you don't disable the safety! however I've just got the Revl camera which I'll be filming with as soon as there is any wind and this should keep the camera shot completely level too..it looks very good in my tests running around the garden chasing the kids and animals! Hope this helps Alex!

This is the Duotone (North kiteboarding) 15M Mono 2018 Model, it goes down to 6mph, We were also using the 17m Juice which is a slightly heavier kite and gets to 7mph. The North ACE 17.5m will also fly in slightly lighter wind and produce more power for ultimate light wind fun!

Why do you wear board shorts over your wetsuit?
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
Jack Barnes I wear board shorts over my wetsuit because we often have my speed boat out in support and jumping in and out and sliding around on the seats can mess up the wetsuits and I would much prefer to ruin a few pairs of boardshorts instead 👍 also I always have my keys on me so if Im out for a freestyle session I sometimes still wear board shorts as they have a zipped pocket with an elastic key leash and I use my aquapac to store my key inside the pocket rather than put it inside my wetsuit which can be uncomfortable
