Lightbar Highlight: Federal Signal Streethawk (All Light Model)

Federal Signal must have changed the shade of green they use because in the 80's and 90's their green lenses had more of an emerald look to them. The green lens in this video looks like a much deeper green. I remember seeing security vehicles in the late 80's using Streethawk, JetSonic and Fireball II's... all with green lenses. When in use they had more of a faded blue appearance to them to that of green. They must have changed vendors or something because the lens on this Streethawk is a much deeper shade of green from what I remember.

It also could be that all of those lenses you saw had been faded by the sun during their use. This one has only ever been used in this collection, so it has no fading.

@@AdamsLights The lights I saw were brand new installs. It was a security company that just took over from another security company. They had big budget contracts, mostly high-end gated communities, and all their equipment was brand new... cars, lights... basically everything. I actually talked to one of the security guards and I remember them telling me at the time how the state had recently allowed the use of green lights for security vehicles and how they specifically purchased new lighting systems with green lenses instead of amber. I've seen a lot of other people comment on the way Federal Signal has changed the hue of their green lenses over the years so it isn't just me. I collect mag-mount dash lights of all types and in my collection I've noticed the same phenomena where NOS green, amber and blue lenses will have different levels of shading for whatever reason (no fading). I can only guess if the manufacturer uses different vendors, or even the same vendor, it's feasible the amount or type of dye used in the polycarbonate mixture could account for this. But again, that's just a guess. I have several amber Whelen Responders and Cadet's with NOS lenses and some have the standard amber shading while one of each are much lighter and look more yellow than amber. I also have several Southern VP model 1166 tear drop lights with amber lenses with the same phenomena. I have two with blue lenses and one is a common blue while the other is much darker. I also have two NOS green lenses for these same lights, one from the mid 1980's and the other was made in the late 90's and the 80's green lense is noticeably darker than the newer one. Go figure...

Cool. I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, just giving a plausible explanation. This happened with Whelen Edge 9000 blue lenses too... I think there are about 10 different variations of NOS blue out there- not including the European CIE blue. Thanks for watching!

@@AdamsLights In the early 80's the fire dept used Whelen series 80 strobe bars and the local sheriff's office used the halogen rotator version, but in all blue. After about two years the red lenses faded to pink and the all blue lenses turned a light shade of green and became extremely opaque to the point you could barely see light from the rotators during the daytime. They had to start replacing the lenses on the halogen rotator model every single year until they finally scrapped those lights altogether.

@@johnhancock6114 A lot of those early 1980’s light covers were garbage! We ended up replacing all of our Fire Department’s lightbars from all strobe models right back to rotators … combination of lens fading and garbage light output from the strobes as well. You are right about the color shifts as well over time… reds faded to pink, and blue turned to greenish blue and cloudy instead of clear. The kids today are spoiled by extremely bright LED strobes and sparkling clear lenses lol

Hey there, I'm getting around to a Streethawk project and i like the flashing takedown lights... are you using LEDs or halogen for them? TIA!

Both! The white outer lights are Halogen, but the colored inner lights are LED bulbs... both on the same flasher.

@@AdamsLights It's a mini one, so just the two outer ones...I was thinking about running a Galls headlight flasher i have laying around... it's a higher speed iirc.

Occasionally it’s used for private security companies (mall cops, etc). I just thought it would be a fun combination to display.

The center alternating flashers that are retrofitted with LED bulbs look better than I thought they would. Did you color match the bulb to the lens color or just use white LED's? Now you have me thinking about putting my StreetHawk bar back together with LED's in the rotators instead of the power hungry halogen bulbs.

Both the LEDS and the lenses are colored, not just the lenses. Although I can tell you that if you were to try to replace a 795 with an LED with the rotators, it won’t be a great output.

Hey James. I don't know exactly what year this particular bar is, but I know that the Streehawk all-light model came out in 1993. The original model with the speaker section in the middle came out in 1986.
