Love the idea to do the first coat of poly then do the sanding. I found myself accidentally stripping colour and I hated having to go go over it again. I’ll try that next time!
@salvagedbykscott Жыл бұрын
Ugh, I’ve been in that situation a few times 🤦🏻♀️
@MightySapphire9 ай бұрын
It would be better to wipe your wood with a damp rag after sanding to raise the grain or else use water based stain to raise the grain then sand. You don't need to worry about it raising twice and you don't want to sand raised grain with poly.

Great job. Taking off the scalloped edging on the bottom and replacing it with a squared apron would boost the cabinet into the new millennium. The scalloped apron is very 70s/80s.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for uncovering that beautiful wood. Pine is my favorite wood, and all of those gorgeous knots hidden under that dark surface was blasphemy. Thank you for showing her some love.

I always smile when I hear that Pune is a soft wood. I’m from north of Sweden really far north and for me (and everyone in my region) pine is a hard wood. Pune grows so slow here so flooring and building wood is always pine. Up here we don’t have so much other wood to rely on, like oak bc they don’t grow here. Pine, birch and spruce, that’s almost everything. Birch is the hardest one and often used in furniture, like now I’m working with a table from 1920 and kitchen and chairs from 1950 both in birch. I’m giving it all the same finish so they will look like they belong together even if they’re from different eras.

Oh this is quite intriguing info! Thank you for sharing! And your table and chairs project sounds really nice, and I'll bet it has turned out lovely. As I'm typing, I'm realizing that I've made the same efforts in my entire home, to blend a 1940s/50s addition seamlessly into the rest of my home, which is from 1923. Vintage style, in both house and furniture, has such a warm and cherished feeling, doesn't it? It feels good to restore old things and enjoy them for many future years. I'm working on restoring an orange oak highchair to a soft blonde finish. Thanks for sharing your story! Best wishes from Minnesota, USA. ❤

Wow, another fabulous redo on an old dresser that needed some freshening up. Love what you did. At first I wasn't sure why you left the very bottom with all the curves as is. I expected you would modernize it with a straight linear piece but seeing the final outcome it looks great just the way it is, and is very coherent in its design. Well done! ❤
@eb9844 Жыл бұрын
I thought the same about the curves. I have the same style furniture that I stripped and wished I had removed those scalloped curves to give it a more updated look. However, it worked for this dresser.

You took an ordinary dresser to a fresh clean yet still classic. Every thing you did was understated but in the end turned out so wonderful! I think this is such a great example that refinishing doesn’t have to have things cut off and painted wild colors to make them feel fresh again! Yay you

Excellent end result in this refinishing project 👍🌟😁 you've also addressed something I've been struggling with. I'd like to use the varathane at the end for table tops, chairs etc for my home,, but I have a small area to work in and I was worried about the misting that appears from the spray gun. I've purchased a tent and electric spray gun. I'll use your method here and try it out. Ty Katie. Your teaching methods are easy to follow and help me feel more confident to try new methods out. Very much appreciated. Your fan from Ontario 🥰

Have pretty much exact same dresser (chest of drawers) along with matching bedside tables about to bring out of storage after 15 years. I know insane time but a long story. Already ordered same black handles which are on their way to me in Australia. Ordered handles before seeing this video as was thinking of painting set in a soft white. Am now rethinking as love the finish you have done here.
