Only just returned from a visit to Southwold Lighthouse last week. Now open to the public, a few changes have taken place since this was filmed, namely rotating LED's installed above the original prisms, and the Red screens are no longer used. Great to see the old days Peter, thanks for posting.

Less than a year ago the vortex teased me with THE epic Hanois video, I have watched it twice and everything else. Outstanding! I do enjoy the ones where the LH is on a rock in the middle of nowhere a little more. Searching lighthouses is disappointing unless it has your name on it. Nobody has what you have on video, great history. Thank you sir.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. So glad you enjoy my videos, I enjoy the Tower Rocks or Island Rocks more myself. There is a lot more to come, some longer ones where I was either stationed or doing relief duty, take care.

Hi Peter and thanks for another Great video. I hadn't realised their Lighthose was so far in town; like two of ours are in Fleetwood. I wonder how many people around the UK and Ireland go to sleep at night, watching THEIR Light ? (What they CAN see through windows.
@PeterHalil5 жыл бұрын
Yes there are a few in towns, and I've seen a few that have a huge Lighthouse beam across their windows every few seconds!

Lowestoft was open for a short while to the public and I met Keith there when he was also Southwold and Orford attendant. Before I was filming though :( Now Lowestoft just has the one spectacle light shining and the other side is the reserve. Southwold is LED.
@PeterHalil5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that, it seems like most of our lights are going solar and LED.

@@hellooldchap Hi On or about the 7th of October. Character will remain the same but composition revised, and obviously the silly anomaly caused by the blank arc will disappear. Fog signal reduced to 1nm

Yes, I saw that in AtoN, thanks. Same FS in the old window space or a new unit like at Start Point?

@@hellooldchap Hi I guessed you may have seen the " on Line" NtoM, its a pity they don't do the old fashioned paper ones any more. As I understand it the work scheduled is still in draft form so cannot say what the plan is for the fog signal.

Another great and interesting video, Peter, thanks for sharing! Is there a reason why on-shore lighthouses were built round, when it would be more convenient if there were build like normal buildings with only the lantern being round? I mean, they are not being bashed by waves or something...
@PeterHalil5 жыл бұрын
Good point, probably that it was tradition. The ones on cliff tops would still get serious weather, so round is best, but those in the middle of towns? I've a few coming up that have lots of corners.

Hello Peter,are any of these lighthouses (and the ones in your other films) still in use? with modern day "sat nav" on ships are they required? just like the red telephone box a lovely reminder of how life used to be,, super films many thanks for filming and indeed showing
@PeterHalil5 жыл бұрын
They are still in use, they have just got rid of the Human element, us Keepers. As for are they needed, that is harder to answer, I'm suspecting that most people rely on electronics and when it fails or hiccups, their world is turned upside down. I follow a fair amount of sailing channels on You tube, and I've lost count on how many that have their GPS etc showing that they are sailing on land! There are plenty of places in this World which have lousy charting/surveying of their coasts and reefs, so I would say the Lights still have their place.

@@PeterHalil thanks for the reply, as you say we do rely on modern technology perhaps a little too much, i am sure the ships captain is happy to see a lighthouse even though he/she may not need it

Alot of life went on under the lighthouse on the land before the sea wall. There was quite a village apparently.
