Thank you for taking the time to respond and explain the how and why of running this wood stove. I finally got the stove and chimney installed and this winter will be the inaugural lighting. Thanks to you and your husband it should be successful.🤞🏻

Excellent tutorial. You chose not to preheat, with a handheld propane burner, the passage to the chimney inside the firebox this time. Does this depend on outside temperatures? When you close the damper does this just restrict (but not shut off) the passageway from firebox to chimney and thereby slow the burn rate? Is it just two positions, open and closed, or is there a middle position? The temperature control “H----C” is adjusting the small lower doors regulating air input, is that correct? Is the idea to restrict airflow to reduce burn rate? Do you adjust these again when the fire is low and you add wood? Do you monitor stovetop temperature? Do you have a max temperature limit? Thanks for helping out beginners like myself. You two have the perfect spot to enjoy the Holiday Season. Have a Merry Christmas.🎄

Hello @pakkelly, Yes, this time my husband did not preheat the passageway to the chimney because it was in the low 40's yesterday, therefore a simple match lit fire and he was able to keep the smoke from coming in the room especially with the window open during the lighting process. If the temps are freezing or below, for the sake of ease, he prefers to heat through the opening of the chimney with his propane torch. I on the other hand, will build my fire way in the back of the firebox and allow the kindling to slowly heat the chimney. Either way, the temperature outside will make all the difference in how you want to light it. As for the main damper on the left of the firebox, it does restrict the smoke but does not shut off the the passageway and will slow down the burn rate of the fire in the firebox. It is only two positions open and closed. Whenever we are going to load more wood into the firebox, we always open the damper, open the ash drawer a smidge and then slowly open the firebox door and put in our wood. The smoke will draw through the open flue up into the chimney and the new piece of wood will catch alight with the draw from the open ash drawer. Once the new wood is in and the firebox is closed again, we close the damper, make sure the new log has caught nicely and then close the ash drawer. You are 100% correct on the temperature control lever. It is also used to control the heat in the oven....if I need a hot oven to bake sourdough bread for instance, I will need the temperature control set to high so I get a hotter burn and higher oven temp. If I am slow cooking a roast, it will be set to it lower level. You get to know your stove depending on the type of wood used, how big the logs are etc. and to know how to adjust the temp control. For heating the house during the day and especially at night, we adjust it on low to restrict the burn rate. We usually adjust the temp control when using the oven and the temperature gauge is telling me that my oven needs to be heated up or cooled down. And of course when we load the firebox at night and want a long slow burn we adjust it again We do have a thermometer on the top of the stovetop and do not let the stovetop reach 500 degrees, we don't want the stovetop to warp due to excessive heat. I hope this helps @pakkelly....feel free to ask any questions! Merry Christmas!

Hello Ivan! Kevin, my husband is originally from South London. He immigrated to the USA in the late 1980's and became an American Citizen. He is my favorite spokesperson for our Kitchen Queen wood cookstove. We live in Kentucky on a farm way out in the country. Thank you for visiting our channel!
