I’m an amateur painter, mostly use acrylic paint, watercolor and oil in that order. Today I’m testing out the power of gray and painting the photo you used. Thank you so much for changing my perspective and yes blowing my mind!

I watch every video you post, because I really appreciate the principles that you reveal with great examples. Daniel Gerhartz has captured some truly amazing painterly light effects. Also enjoying Slava Korolenkov for his 'magic realism' colors.

I've been working as an animator and illustrator between 2000 and 2010. I've tried a lot of ways and seeked a few mentors to help me improve. Now that I'm returning to the world of art, I find that your videos are the most insightful and revealing that I've ever come across. Thank you and please keep posting!

I am very happy to have found your channel. A real professional who passes on his knowledge. Thanks a lot for this. I would be very happy if you would free yourself from Adobe dependency and use alternatives like Affinity Photo/Designer or Clip Studio Paint. That would be even more exciting for me and many others who oppose the Adobe pricing policy. Greetings from Germany. Edit: If you know PS, you'll know Affinity Photo instantly and you only pay once. I paid under $40 so it's definitely worth a try, plus there's a 30-day trial. I use all of these programs myself and am not paid for this recommendation.

In the jobs you have worked in the industry, what types of programs have you used? From what I gather, you used photoshop to render the color and texture of backgrounds. And it seems like studios use programs like maya and katana for lighting. Am I right in thinking this?

Hi Audra... yes Photoshop is pretty much a standard for digital concept design, but for the films themselves the tools vary wildly. Maya is huge for sure for 3d modeling. Katana is also widely used, as well as Houdini, and most studios have a custom version of software or outright proprietary software that is custom made for the studio in particular. This is my main reason I aim to teach the principles of color and light rather than software. software is always changing and each studio will provide training in their own unique version of these pieces of software anyway, so we should know what makes an image beautiful and effective, and those skills can be applied to any software. I hope that answers your question
