It's reassuring to know how simple most of these light set ups are. Although I've often heard/read "you don't need a complicated light set up" I've always interpreted that in my head as "a simple light set up is a good starting point for learning" or "a simple light set up will get your image 90% where you want it to be" so it's cool to see that single light set ups are regularly used to good effect in reality and not just in photography tutorials.

Thank you for this Tony . I see advice chucked about all over the place but lighting can be very specific in relation to subject and this helps bring clarity , well it has for me as mostly I am shooting every day folks and confirms my liking for soft light . For what it is worth I have found exceptions though so pls excuse me for sharing . 1, the beauty dish may seem a harsh modifier however I tried a 2 foot white interior 16 rod one with diffusion in very close for paramount lighting clamshelled and it was quite forgiving yet replicated this classical style , 2 , outdoors I found we can get away with far harder light over a wide range of subjects which would not be advisable in a studio as our minds are ready to accept hard light outdoors because it is wot we see in sunshine plus in a studio there is no ambient light for fill but there is outdoors , but this brings me to Annie Liebovitz with that huge scrim over a large window in her studio which begs the question "is she using natural light with strobes indoors"? , I am not sure but I love her work and with some of it think there could be more going on in a less is more way if that makes sense.

Lighting is one of the things that has been holding me back, and I would imagine that is the case for most people that are just getting started on portraits. Most the time I am jsut getting by with natural light or a flash with modifier (magmod). While that is ok, it really limits what I can do. So the short is, thanks for this video Tony, please do more videos about lighting! :)

Tony I think you may have it wrong on the shot at around 10:06. Look at Camera left bottom of frame. She is leaning against a white wall. That small catchlight showing a light source camera left is the fill from the wall. I think this may still be a single light shot.

Is the Vogue cover backlit or was that just the model stood too close to the cyc wall and the light wrapped around her? My Dad told me not to have the models stand too close to the cyc wall but I think that wrap around light looks cool sometimes, like sunlight. Also on the Adele Vogue Cover it looks like they dodge and burned it on her face.

I catch myself doing the same thing of trying to reverse engineer other folks’ images (and some times cinematography as well) ;) For the bride shot, I’m guessing those two big fills were V-flats reflecting the hi-key backlighting; possible beauty dish in front for additional fill. That's what I was going to say. One of those flash softbox attachments and the key flash is in the hotshoe with the camera rotated CCW 90 degrees. Balanced with ambient light in the shade.
@MisterTwister556 жыл бұрын
Tony & Chelsea Northrup close. on camera sb5000, no modifiers. straight onto my face. I was holding a white reflector on my right side (camera left). the rim is the sun. I was wearing a suit in a horse barn at a large door so most of the light on my face came from the flash. credit to @makeamericabakeagain for pressing the shutter lol

First example, look in her eyes, the light source is given away. Is what it is.. Sent this before watching the whole program. I'll give one thing; most people will not catch it but they could have Shopped it and they did not. Something to be said there good or bad. Honest. Example #2 , that spec should have been shopped. Something to question or ask about, they shop just about everything in modeling why not the Eye? Well the eye is KZbin 101; honestly it was nothing new but in today's world you would think they would "Cover up" these artifacts.
