This song will always have a special place in my heart. I put this on the radio driving home from my last 12 hour shift at my first ever 'real' job. I'd accepted an offer as a temp worker at a huge company in a field I didn't know the first thing about. I couldn't have guessed that not only would I get hired on full time, I'd eventually end up leading a team there 5 years later. In that time I moved out to live in my own place for a few years, traveled outside my own country, got to see Protomen play live in Atlanta, and I met my girlfriend who I'm now living with. I couldn't have guessed for a minute just how much my life would change that night, driving home with my windows down and this song blasting on the radio. I'll borrow from the song to send a message of my own: If you can hear my voice outside these walls, if you can hear me sending out this message tonight: There is hope for you, for us, for the future. No matter how dark it feels sometimes, don't turn your back on the city.

"But, if I'm the only one left standing, I will not be afraid to fight!" There. That's the point. Protoman died when no one else would stand, and he felt humanity was wrong for forsaking him. Megaman gave up when he stood, and no one else stood with him. Neither is right. Joe knew that it doesn't matter if others stand with you or not. If you should stand, you stand. "A hero is just a man, who knows his is free." Free to stand without the need for others to stand with you. It took me a long time to figure it out, but that's what it means. Hope rides alone.

Next time you listen to the album, notice that the heartbeat begins during "How The World Fell Into Darkness," which marks when Light is run out of town. You can hear the city begin to change into an automated thing, represented by the diminishing physical instrumentation and increasing synth. The heartbeat starts when Joe is born during the transition to machine-fascism, and stops at the end of "The Fall." These guys are amazing.

There's a slim chance anyone's going to read or notice this in the comments, but if you do, this is for you: You're here. You're alive. You mean something. So let your heart pump your veins with gasoline. Ride until the streets run out, and burn until there's nothing left to burn about, and break out of here tonight. Don't let your life be driven by anyone else who might turn the wheels. Make your own story. Be your own hero, and maybe some day when the people whose lives you enriched tell your story to their children before they sleep, they'll remember you as someone who knew they were free. Now get going, because you've got work to do.

The city doesn't know what's coming, She doesn't feel the heat. The city won't know what hit her, What knocked her out into the streets. The city is thinking that it's over, And she's already fast asleep. So I'm breaking out of here tonight. I am ready. We're given only what we need, Only the chance to survive. And even then, it's a coin toss, A roll of the dice. There's gotta be something better, Something that feels more alive. So I'm breaking out of here tonight. I'm breaking out of here. You've got to feel it girl, Feel the wind pick up. It feels like something's gonna change, But there's no use putting it in drive If all the wheels are stuck. There's somethin' wrong here, Like this whole city wants to scream, But no one makes a sound. But, you've got to feel it, baby. So I'm going to find out what it is And I'm going to tear it down The engine's running, baby. We don't have time for goodbyes. I know you can't come with me. I see that look in your eyes. So kiss me fast Cause there's no time to lose. Leave the light on I'll come back for you. When everything is said and done, I swear I'm gonna make it right. I'm breaking out of here tonight. I'm so tired of giving up. I am so tired of giving in. You wake up knowing things should change, Not knowing where to begin. This city won't say where she's going, And she won't speak of where she's been. So I'm breaking out of here tonight... Breakin' out. Don't turn your back on the city Say a prayer for all The children still sleeping. Say a prayer for all the fathers Who still remember. Say a prayer for all the girls Who've learned to stand up. Say a prayer for all the boys Who won't surrender. Sometimes I just want to drive Until the streets run out. I want to burn until there's Nothing left to burn about. This city's waiting for a better day. When I get back there will be hell to pay. But, if I'm the only one left standing, I will not be afraid to fight. I'm breaking out of here tonight. I feel a fever coming on me, Burning out of control. And I hear nothing but the static. For years now there's been nothing But the static on the radio. If you can hear my voice outside these walls, If you can hear me sending out this message tonight, Then break the silence, send a signal back. I'm coming, all I need is a little guiding light. ...If you can hear me. Don't turn your back on the city.. If you can hear me... Don't turn your back on the city.

This was my least favorite song in Act II. I didn't like Joe until I listened to Act I, then Act II immediately after. The contrast between this and The Stand. Protoman didn't believe that humans would fight for their own freedom, and they hadn't. Give Us The Rope shows us this when they drive their only hope out of the city. Joe is the proof to the contrary. He's the proof that Humanity WILL stand. This entire song just goes to prove that Protoman overlooked one detail: He overlooked Joe.

This may very well be the perfect anthem for the Millennial generation. Think about it: due to the economic troubles and the housing market problems, so many of us are stuck at home when previous generations would have gained full independence much earlier. Frustrated, feeling powerless, stuck in the world the previous generations built and struggling to break free ("I'm breaking out of here tonight, I'm ready"). Plenty of the older generation insist that everything's fine ("This city's thinking that it's over, she's already fast asleep", "There's something wrong here, like this whole city wants to scream, but no one makes a sound"). But everything's NOT fine. We see trends in the world that we don't like, but have little power to stop or change things ("It feels like something's gotta change, but there's no use putting it in drive if all the wheels are stuck", "You wake up knowing things should change, but not knowing where to begin"). Then when we do try to change things, when we do break out, the previous generation often shouts back at us, trying to halt our change ("Don't turn your back on the city"). We're stuck in the houses we grew up in, despite our desire to get out on our own. Living under the same rules we lived under as teenagers and kids, even into our adulthood; some say we ought to be lucky to have a place to live, but what good is living if you can't feel alive ("We're given only what we need, only the chance to survive", "There's gotta be something better, something that feels more alive")? We try to survive by reaching out to each other, finding others who share our frustrations. But even in the age of the internet, divisions occur that lock us out, making us feel lost and alone even as we try to call for help ("I hear nothing but the static, for years there's nothing but the static on the radio", "If you can hear my voice outside these walls," "Break the silence, send a signal back"). In spite of all that, we still can't stop the need for independence, the need to be free of the old world and find one that we can fit into and make our own ("Sometimes I just wanna drive until the streets run out, I wanna burn until there's nothing left to burn about", "I'm breaking out of here"). Without realizing it, the Protomen have created the perfect spokesperson for our generation. Let's raise a glass to our hero, Joe!

@Reclaimer077 Eh technically he can't be an ancestor, but I'm sure Protomoan and/or Megaman were made in his image.

If I were to guess anyone new being introduced into Act 3, I would go with Bass over Zero. My guess is the Wily would create Bass to be the new commander of his army and to terrorize the people as best he could. REALLY put fear into their hearts.

@BigJon777 On this album they had one of Meatloaf's producers. So that be why.
