n!tromy Well like Eileen pointed out, Virgil’s greed and ego blinded him to the issues of Lightmatter which could have potentially consumed the world. Not to mention the implication it was siphoning people’s lifeforce away as the real source of its power. The very usage of Lightmatter was unethical and counter-productive to “saving” humanity’s future. It would have killed everyone long before pollution did.

And who's to say that that amount can't be compensated for? I.E. if the shadow effect has a stable radius, then just don't live in that region. On the other hand, it didn't seem like the technology had natural limits, so it's likely that in it's current form it wouldn't be usable. I have questions... 1. What company was the spy originally from? I’m assuming it’s Aperture because the only references we see are from Portal, but they could also be from Black Mesa or any other science facilities that are in that universe. 2. How long would it have taken the plants to overtake the facility? A year, maybe? Less? And would they be able to stop them after that? They regrow “in a matter of minutes,” and they would block the way to the power switch, so good luck shutting it down. Oh, and also the shadows would probably have consumed most of human civilization by then, but I mean this is all hypothetical, right?

Starting at 1:32:55, what is that conversation about?!? Also, why did Virgil leave you in the control room, and what was the point of fixing the anomalies with Ellen if Virgil was going to do it already?
@Luar774 жыл бұрын
From what I understood, Arthur discovered that the light crystals didn't broke the laws of physics by having an energy conversion efficiency of 102%, he discovered that the crystals get the extra energy from the shadows, hence the shadows absorbing matter and all that "cellular degradation" stuff.With this discovery, he realized that whatever Virgil was going to do to try solve the shadow problem was just going to worsen it and eventually destroy humanity and the planet. Since there was no real solution to those shadows, he tried to stop the operation, with no success. Later Ellen, discovers the reason why Arthur did what he did, and tries to stop the operation as well. Knowing she couldn't because of the guards protecting the CORE, she leaves instructions and presets to help anyone that is willing to destroy the CORE (in this case the player). So leaving Virgil to solve the problem would be a catastrophe. Also with that conversation James seems worried that the shadows are spreading to the outpost and eventually the nearest city
@redpepper744 жыл бұрын
Raul Semede [Luar77] Yup, I can second all that! When Ellen was looking through Arthur’s notes, she found something about “equilibrium,” meaning that the light actually pulled the power from the areas that weren’t being lit up, hence the extra 2%. When it was upped to 7% extra, the decaying process got so fast that the term was upgraded to “consuming.” ...am I just repeating everything you said or is this different enough lol
@Luar774 жыл бұрын
@@redpepper74 it's different enough lol, but yeah Virgil wanted to make the crystal as efficient as possible so you could see how bad of an idea it actually was.

Fun facts: oil fields that were previously drilled dry have actually begun to refill, pointing to the validity of an alternate theory that oil is produced underground by natural processes and is not a fossil fuel. Scientists have also pointed out that carbon dioxide in increased quantities in the atmosphere helps plants grow and any warming from carbon dioxide would both increase plants' ability to grow and the number of arable acres of land in the world, making it much easier to feed the world. Also, extreme cold causes far more deaths than extreme heat. People don't retire to Northern Canada. They retired to places like Florida, where the weather is nice and warm. Oh, and all of the estimates of death by pollution rely on assuming that other deaths from various causes are caused by pollution. Other wise a very fun game.
