Hey Plukky, your retrospectives are very enlightening, I am not a sailor and I find this fascinating. I saw your cat retrospective video where you said that you should have done more to save the boat earlier on, having been through this now and succeeding in saving the vessel, what would you say changes in the way you would have done things differenty the first time around? Is there a way to create a "checklist of possible places where the water is coming in from? Thanks!

Lightning strike, hole in the boat and sharks, in the middle of the night...and still had the presence of mind to video the event. These videos should be seen by anyone out there on a boat. Recording these events and analyzing them later is an important act. Your a hero Peter...nothing but quality.

Alone & remote, lightning strike, sinking & Bull sharks at night ! I remember when this all went down the first time and the most drama that same week on SLV was Riley dropping his wallet whilst out for a walk….. don’t worry he got it back. Peter’s channel is the most intense and real one out there. Truly inspiring.

When I was in the Navy we learned to use various types of plugs and patches for holes during damage control situations and I think a box patch would've been your best option if you had one. It's simply a metal box with a rubber gasket that's held in place with a screwbolt similar to a drywall anchor. It would stop the leak immediately. You did a great job thinking on your feet and it's awesome you put this lessons learned video together.

Hey there Mate. I feel you're looking into this way too hard. Yes, you might have taken too long? But how many times has this happened to you.? This is how we all learn. Matter of fact you survived the event. "YOU PREVAILED." I am sure there are plenty of stories out there about Sailors like yourself that are resting in peace down on that ocean floor. To me, you are a HERO! You have the guts to take on the sea and that's why I love watching your adventures. I wish you the best mate!

Never a dull moment here folks! As an emergency services type, we run to it not away from it, your quick assessment and immediate actions were awesome. After the event it is always more clear what could have been done. What is amazing is how quickly you acted with workable solutions under the pressure and the emotions of the event. In the dark, alone, away from any help, at risk to loosing everything and with the limited tools available you saved the boat single handed and made a video of the event to boot! I consider that amazing Mate! Well Done!

These videos about the lightning strike is not only impressive in the way you solved the problem. It is as impressive of how you look at life and the world! You analyze yourself and think you could have done it better when what you did is an example of keeping calm while doing things quickly. It's easy to look at the video and have thoughts or recommendations afterwords. Most people would have given up and jumped the ship very early and never gone diving with the sharks!! Kudos!

That is too kind... but i was running around like a headless chicken for quite a while when i wasn't filming at the start to get everything i did together... and there may have been swearing....i was not too calm....more like slightly arranged mayhem with a perceived goal at the end. Funny thing is... if i had help arrive i think i would have lost the boat. .. the other party would have interfered. Thank you for the nice comment

Forewarned is forearmed. Lots of good ideas from a man of superior humility. A ball of aloo-min-yum with a bolt and washers on each side, to squish it wide. A dutchman applied from the inside. There are other sizes and shapes of holes to think about. I wonder how many lives this video will save. Respect to you.

I have been watching since startup, and first time commenting! So I’m a 20 year firefighter veteran, to say. We are trained not to have tunnel vision and to see the entire scene! So saying that, I think that you did a stand up job, in a moment of sheer terror, while filming and takin care, best you could, of problems as they were found! Anyone, and certainly you, can critique your actions after the (fire) however you did what was necessary at the moment! A testimony to you and keeping cool und the worst pressure of loss of life, ( yours) and also saving your home! Great job, and don’t worry about those who criticize your actions. My guess, they have never had to react under life and death situations and wish to give advice about something they have never experienced themselves! Just my humble thoughts!

I have learned sooo much from this series of videos! Thank you for your honesty and forethought to document all of it and convey this valuable information! One thing that I would have thought was completely intuitive but I did not think about it immediately, is the lightning was seeking away through the boat and into the water. The natural first place to look is metal penetrations through the boat. Biggest point is the prop shaft, and of course thru hulls. The billows would now be one of the first places I look. The other thing I think I learned is general preparedness. Redundant methods of patching, having bung plugs wired to the thru hulls, alternate methods of power generation for pumps. It really hit home with me the need for pre-planning and preparedness. I think were were lucky too that you were limited to a couple large holes, even though that might seem weird to say. There was a sail boat on a lake near me that got hit and sunk like a rock. When they pulled it out of the water, they could not find any holes until someone was inside with a light and a guy standing outside could see pin holes covering half the hull. Lightning had scattered along the surface and exited the hull everywhere below the waterline! Anyway, thanks again for the incredibly important lesson!

Very impressed with this 7 part series on surviving three bolts of lightening. Amazing survival skills by Peter. Just amazing. I doubt if any other Captain would have survived with the boat intact. I think you've been through the fire with two boat emergencies. You saved your boat? You survived bull sharks circling you at night as you couldn't be bothered by fear of attack, while patching your hull. Just amazing adventure. Intrepid. Indomitable. Unsinkable. Peter........a fisher king. A great spirit and man of action and adventure. Errol Flynn would tip his hat to you. I think this 7 part series trumps all other sailing Vlogger channels. Really, dude.....it doesn't get more compelling to see Peter react, think, and survive. You somehow figured it all out and made the right decisions without panicking. You only had so much time to diagnose the problems and fix it (wi cruising Bull Sharks at night adding more madness to the mix). What bad luck on all fronts. If I was rich.....I'd send big monetary reward for Peter's grace under pressure. This was quite a test God gave you. He honed your ability to a fine edge with this near disaster. Most people would have panicked or got bummed out and lost focus on survival with an improbable "boat save". Somehow, someway.....I think Peter's channel is the best sailing channel. Peter, you should be proud of yourself. Being alone is always tougher...and, I think Peter is better and focuses better when alone. If I was to sail or seek out someone to teach sailing......Peter's my first pick.

What a nice thing to say. Thank you for taking the time to write that down. Not to downplay it too much but all I really did was shove 2 plastic bags in a hole and apply some tape. I critiqued my performance in a later release of this lightning issue (look at the last one, you may find it amusing) I redid the whole series again hoping to get more subscribers because let's face it hardly anyone watched what you just did when I released it at the time. But I am glad you liked it. P

@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM I got a feeling, some classics take time before the crowd comes around. "The Big Lebowski" was like that. Van Morrison's jazz album "Astral Weeks" was like that. Just saying...this could be the best sailing Vlogger channel, because it's more real, more gritty without being negative. Yes you patched the hole.......but....but...Peter...you had a hidden hole coming through the propellar shaft. Alot of Captains would have been less than vigilant figuring that out. You made it look easy. And you did this on little or no sleep for at least a day...then 32 hours of no sleep? Well.....desperation is the mother of invention. Who could sleep under such strain? The scary boat disaster was your cat getting four feet of water with Margarida's eyes the size of half dollars. Poor girl. You took control of that one too...you didn't lose composure. Help me on that one...what happened? Anchor slipped? Or traveling at night in uncharted and unknown areas: risky business all the way. Well perhaps I did lionize you a bit but....show me another channel that caught three lightening strikes on a boat at night...and, much to my surprise, the electricity created a tough to find leak. And...with those bull sharks circling at night, that's a real recipe for disaster. What did I learn? Sharks at night are frisky, hungry and predatory.....and they come to boats. I just wouldn't swim at night off a boat. I just wouldn't do that. But, those sharks must have sensed they were dealing with a different type of guy....a Peterman. May the winners win, and the losers lose. Survival of the Fittest. I win the lottery, you get a new frigging boat.

Capt James at Zingaro had an actuator fail, and he had alot of water in the bilge...and he wasn't really ready with an alt bilge pump from an independent power source. He bailed. He had a crewman to help. Peter was alone at night with sleep deprivation. It's a lesson to learn from...and like Peter, he also had a Cat that had emergency (James had his boat pull apart at sea, so they bundled it together with rope).

It's good stuff to get a disaster psychology take. No amount of preparation can anticipate all the crazy ways things can go wrong. The point to just keep on trying constantly is well made and applies to all of life's challenges. Only by trying can you home in on what's working and what isn't. It also gives you the power, the sense of your destiny still being in your hands. It staves off the horror and paralysis that will surely be much more disastrous.

He said buy 3. of the big ones. Set 2 up with boss and wide so you can throw them any where. He added that hI needed to put a valve on the engine coolant so you can pump the bilge with the engine. I had a hose problem once and all this helped. The big problems was the breaker assent large enough for the added bilge pumps. It is always in the middle of the night when trouble comes. Be prepared and check everything out become the desaster. The engine cooling water out of the bilge needs a good screen.

Awesome episode, your retrospective on this event was a true and valuable look at handling adversity...I took slot away from it as I suffer from severe anxiety and depression retouching myself how to react properly in everyday scenarios is difficult, so seeing how an individual handles an extreme situation with clear thinking and a goal (albeit life and death!) You broke it down to the key elements of action, do don't freeze...(I used to tend to go into the fetal position and try to hide!! On your saiboat, you know where that would have gotten me!) Ive been watching for the last few months and really enjoy your content! Good luck to you!!!! Thank you!!

That feeling of premature accomplishment -- Yes. I get that feeling every time I touch any form of plumbing. We just hang in there, awaiting the final verdict from the Big Guy in the Sky. Glad you made it through.

That was an Excellent critical thinking for you saving the boat but most importantly yourself. God be with you always. I also admire you for not overfishing, not getting the oversized and some considerations on some fishes and just do the thumbs up, Salute to you sir.

You solved the problem quickly in my opinion and so I agree with all the comments I’ve read. Brilliant videos given the circumstances. The shark when you were fixing that hole! Holly phuquing molly! And you went in again after! What a survivor. 👍😎

God was there with you the entire time! He helped you rig the boat well enough to stay afloat and then to get more food after you gave your food away! You helped others by fixing their carb and feeding a big family. God takes care of people who help one another! Great channel!!!
