Plukky....I look forward to your vids. At my advanced age and financial situation my sailing adventures are provided by youtube. I do get out but it's an 83 Mako21 and all near shore, Florida Keys, or back in Everglades National Park...Ah, but in the 70s......A Columbia 26 and 2 beautiful earlier prototypes of "The Lovely Margarida". Did I say beautiful?...We were broke ass hippies but we managed to act like cruisers because the Bahamas were an overnight sail away. I really enjoy your act and many of your adventures mirror our own excitement/terror/peaceful sunsets/terror/etc. We share the 2 lightening strikes on an ungrounded boat experience. The difference is we had no holes blown in the hull but we were hit under sail in a narrow channel through a reef. Too long to share the details here. The Columbia is long gone but as luck would have it the 2 beautiful "Lovely Margarida" prototypes are still with me 50 yrs later. I'm going to send you some cash to pay you back for all of the great vids but mostly for helping this crusty old sailor remember...Oh shit....no, I'm not crying...just a little spray in my eyes.

Being told I can or can't live in a particular home even if I show the money. Sailing, while challenging has it's perks this year more than any year ever. I just hope I don't have someone telling me "I not allowed to buy a boat" when the time comes that I have enough money, and more importantly a passive income that isn't tied to a job on land.

@@netook8 I mean you could just stick to weekend sailing/boating and maybe some month to two month cruises during the proper seasons (i.e. not sailing in the tropics in the summer because of heat and storms). To top it off, the Ericson 38 sailboat I sold to someone that was in near-mint condition sank 150 miles out to sea and the owner had to be rescued by chopper. He was a very experienced sailor too.

I know this is way after the fact, but there is a two part underwater sealer called "splashguard." Actually works and has strength when it hardens. What's left of your mast? When you repair, will you add a grounding plate and gentle curving wire from mast to plate? They say to connect your metal tanks, engine, and all through hulls, but I don't like this idea due to potential for galvanic or induced corrosion.

I'm confused , how did the grounding cable on your mast fail ? And # 2 ? Why do you have to get to a travel lift ? Call a yard salvage boat w/ airbags and divers and drag her to a beach at low tide and put a good Band-aid on her come high tide drag back off ? Seems like a proper grounding system would have kept it to minimum damage ? Glad you are safe and glad Margarida was safe on shore

I can truly relate, with friends Harry & Linda asking me swim in Columbia River as victim being rescued with "The Life Sling" by sailboat club members. It's storming, I'm now seeing whole trees floating down swift current, not a safe place, black thunderheads roll in, I'm in water, hooked to masthead by cable, while crews lifting me on board with cable deck wenches! My whole body is being racked by all kinds of currents, surface waves, high winds, head on a swivel looking for multiple head on dangers! But mainly looking up cable I'm hooked to to top of sail mast head, an "bang", lightening strick, huge flash of light an sparks in 360°! Down comes marine brand radio/cb radio antennas all crashing on deck an crew! Now I'm hanging out in Columbia River turbulence all forgotten, after that lightening strict! Thanks, Harry!

This happened to me, about 1.5 years ago, down in the Ragged Island, Bahamas. ALL the onboard electronic was destroyed... I mean every single device, from plotter to display, from vhf to autopilot, from ais to USB charger, ... both fridges regulators were killed... practically all led lights. But this not all : the lightning triggered the electronic controller of one of the two engines (we were on our Outremer 45 cat.). The starter went on spinning... but never stopped... the whole engine electrical wiring went on fire. In the end, the fire died, leaving an unstoppable running engine. What was left to us in this remote islands : portable vhf, mobile phones with Navionics, Iridium. Very fortunately... the boat insurance covered the damage! What about you?
@richardowen43254 жыл бұрын
@ Eric: When you say 'electronic controller' was that a common rail engine with Electronic Control Unit (ECU)? What make/type of engine? Amazed that it (and your second engine?) still ran after a lightning strike.

In a lightning storm is there some kind of master switch to prevent this kind of damage?
@ericmoreau71684 жыл бұрын
@@richardowen4325 it was a Volvo Penta D1-30. The controller is the so called MDI black box, the engine's brain. It melted. The start/stop buttons and display (that also holds some electronic components) were fried too.
@ericmoreau71684 жыл бұрын
@@BirdDog. well, sure, you should try to disconnect as much as possible. But in fact, when you get a direct hit on the mast, an open switch or jumper is just a joke for so high voltage. The lightning runs down the wires (antenaes, radar, mat lights, ...) then runs through the electrical network and NMEA electronic bus, jumping over opened switches...
