This has to be the best Lightning video I have ever seen. Some two seat "trainers" too. They say the T series would take off without after burners. Every Lightning was a piece of art to me and to see so many is a treat I've not had since I was in short trousers. Wonderful. I thank you so much.

Happy memories of the last Lightning display...from being a small boy watching the Lightings at Leconfield to seeing their twilight years at Binbrook , this aircraft never failed to enthrall me in a way no other aeroplane could.

Me too. Push biked up from Grimsby/Cleethorpes every day in the school summer holidays and even in winter in thick snow. The good old days when I was fit biking up Ashby cum Fenby and Thorganby hills.

Whilst stationed at RAF Boulmer in Northumberland I had the rare pleasure of going on detachment with 11Sqn to Akrotiri in Cyprus for its 6 week APC (live firing of guns) back in 1982, great times!

with all due respect to the red arrows THESE were FIGHTERS not glorified training jets! .Fantastic piece of 60s kit...
@timhancock66263 жыл бұрын
The original design was late 1940s, first flight August 1954....so 50s kit really, which makes it even more amazing that they got so much right. They were not fighters either. They were interceptors designed to take out Soviet bombers. They were not designed to dogfight so interceptor is the correct term. They had no endurance to get involved in fights anyway as they had about an hour and a bit to get there, shoot and get back again PDQ before they ran out of fuel. The big over wing tanks you sometimes see are ferry tanks only, and they couldn't be jettisoned, so no good for combat in that configuration either.

they were fast landers, as i recall from local in the tower..............the only other amazing sights were when the belgian ? f104 starfighters arrived after an exchange visit.............flying pencils....................and of course Binbrook always had the RHAG and barriers available at the same time if needed .....oh, happy days.........

Shame this place is a tip now went there this year and this is where the Lightning went missing from , went down in the sea then recovered and returned to base and reason’s covered up by MOD , pilot never found .

He was an American exchange pilot who was shadowing a Shackleton at night too low and he hit the deck. He got out on ditching and even if he got in a dinghy died of exposure or injury. It was mooted that aliens took him as when the aircraft was raised from the seabed the canopy was closed. An opened canopy to make an escape would close at depth due to water pressure. RIP Capt Bill Schaffner USAF. Many bodies are lost at sea. My own cousin, a merchant seaman fell overboard some years ago and was never found.
