Welcome to Advanced Destruction Series: Lightning Strike
• Creating the terrain
We will be creating this entire scene in Houdini from scratch, including all the effects, geometry, and compositing.
We will start by first creating a terrain, using the heightfield workflow.
We are going to use multiple cutting techniques to obtain fractured pieces only where we need them.
For the simulation we will create a custom vector that will drive the movement of our pieces.
And then we will create some small rock debris which we add on top of our simulation to add more variation and realism.
• Lightning FX and Rays
For the lightning we will create the geometry in various ways. We will use a combination of POP simulations,
copy to points techniques, and attribute vops to have complete control over the lightning.
From our fractured pieces we will create some volumetric rays to add on top of the lightning.
• Debris Smoke and Dirt
And finally we will use our fractured geometry to create the smoke debris and another layer of particles which
will essentially act as dirt.
• Render and composite
In the rendering section I will go over how we can setup different renders for each layer that also contains AOV's,
to have complete control over each of our elements.
In the Nuke section we will bring everything together to complete the final look. This part will be fairly
straightforward, with the ocasional tips and tricks, and some of my favorites nodes that I use on daily basis.

Just finished. Overall a very good course, I recommend without hesitation. Content quality: good. A nice effect with excellent techniques and up-to-date workflows, achievable even for solo artists without the need for high-level hardware or renderfarms. Difficulty level: in line with the indications (intermediate). Tone and pace of explanation: good. Quality of the explanation: excellent, it stops where it is needed but leaves nothing for granted. . New course suggestions: I followed the whole part of Houdini without difficulty but I realize that I still have shortcomings in how to set up and organize render passes / AOV from Houdini to Nuke. If a specific course or tutorial were possible I think it would be useful to many of us. Thanks, great job.

This is a Great Course. The only note worth to mention for those who consider this one: it requires Redshift render engine (and you know, it's a bit pricey). I wish there was a section on Rendering in Karma

Thank you! Karma is unfortunately still super slow with global ilumination which all these renders rely heavily on. Hopefully later this year we will get Karma XPU which is super fast and looks promising!

I need help in the "18 Animate Vector" video of this course... When i set the ramp for the age, it just wont work, the particles just stay white the entire time, they wont fade. I've followed the steps many times. Please help. I paid for this course.

@@voxyde Don't worry anymore. I found out what the issue was XD I got one little (but really important) step wrong. When editing the "Age" in "Visualization" i was setting the "Attribute" as "age" instead of "amp". That was the issue. But thanks for caring about it! It took me two days experimenting with the nodes to figure out what the issue was.

hey dude, i just purchased your course and only just started. at the optimized terrain section when i plug my heightfield object merge and the tube into the boolean they dont merge together and instead i just see the height field. any suggestions? im using v19.5.368

Hmm it should work. Are you sure both inputs (A & B) are geometry? Maybe you used the heightfield version instead of the converted geometry for the heightfield? Otherwise you should experiment with the boolean features. Maybe you can use "Set A" as "treat as surface", and use a volume extrude on that to recreate the same kind of geometry. If that doesn't work either, maybe you can try opening it in an older version of houdini, as it might be bugged in the version you're using? Hi ! for the rendering you are using only redshift right ? This is not available for Arnold or mantra?

Hi! Unfortunately yes, only redshift. All the render passes rely heavily on Global Illumination which is quite fast in Redshift, but very slow in Mantra. As for Arnold I haven't used it yet. Karma XPU is looking super promising, however it's not quite there yet with exporting custom passes and AOVs.

Hi. If you follow the course and reach the Nuke section you can pretty much change the color there to whatever you want by using grade/color correct nodes.

Hi. Yes , this is a course more aimed for intermediate users. You need to know some Houdini basics prior to taking this course
