All tall buildings “attract” lightning, there are grounded rods that protect the antennas, otherwise no one would put their antenna up there to be zapped all the time. (My college radio station antenna got hit (this was over 20 years ago). While it did have a grounded rod, the angle of the strike still nailed the antenna itself. They had to replace most of the on-site equipment as it all got sent back in time and returned with all the magic smoke missing.

The atoms that 'glow' purple when exposed to high voltage are nitrogen and oxygen, what our atmosphere is mostly made up of and its the release of energy from those atoms in the form of light. Hence the colour of the glow of lightning is what most of the atmosphere in that path reacts to being excited from MILLIONS of volts of electricity. side note: if you've been paying attention, you get more than just blinding light as energy being released. Sound and lots of heat energy.

aKtUaLLyyy, the myth that lightning strikes the tallest object is up for debate, let alone how much we understand about lightning as well. If its going to strike something though, having a conduction wire connected to the ground makes that the path of least resistance as opposed to continually travelling through air.

If you play/pause it at 0:01 at zero point 25 speed you can see that it reached out from the building 1st into the sky lightning does strike from both ends. It's more like two ends coming to meet obviously that would be positive and negative.
