That original prototype is the slickest, most beautiful aircraft ever. It got faster and more deadly, but was never as just plain beautiful.

One of those planes that was already in production when the war started, and was still our fastest operational (OK, there were a few P-80s and American Mosquitos around) fighter at the war's end.
