I so miss seeing Ted on Nightline. He's such a brilliant and ethical man. Thank him much for trying to alert the rest of us- still not sure how we can protect ourselves. But knowledge is power. Thank you, Mr. Koppel.

Basically, with no electricity...we will return to the technology of the 1800's. Every thing we depend on uses electricity. Think about that for a minute. Have a cache of food and water..enough to last for at least a few months. Gear to prepare the food, remember, with no power. And clothes and gear for the cold months. Don't tell anyone you have it...or you will end up having it taken or having to fight to keep it. It is estimated...that if this happened and the power was out for close to a year...80% to 90% of the population would not survive. Because so few are not prepared or would just give up. Just for a few weeks and society would lose it's mind. Pretty scary stuff.

I have twenty five years as a steam engineer in a power plant. Having seen the deficiencies in security at power plants first hand I worry daily that terrorists will discover that short coming. So many say that a physical attack on the grid would be futile as the grid is protected from such attacks but I assure you that it is not necessary for an attack to take down the entire grid to cause a long enduring crisis that will echo throughout the country. A mere dozen dedicated terrorists with high powered, heavy calibered rifles could simultaneously attack the major power plants which are typically rural and situated relatively close together along rivers such as the Ohio. They could easily disrupt huge portions of the grid. Factor in human operating error in the manage of these plant failures and it could be much worse. Terrorists could easily infiltrate the turbine room of any plant I've been in and if they knew what to target, destroy both generators and their respective drive turbines within seconds. If that man then continues to the distribution area and shoots the corresponding transformers, that plant is down for months. This fella would likely get away in the ensuing panic while the operating crews scratches their knuckle heads thinking that loud noise was simply a failed tube. That terrorist could then drive to the outlying distribution stations that same afternoon and riddle transformers with bullets while law enforcement authorities are at the plant scratching their knuckleheads in the aftermath (if they have even been notified at that point). Even simpler it would be to infiltrate the computer control room and operator control rooms. A knowledgable fella could easily defeat the halon system and burn the process units. Or simply take a machete to them. There are endless scenarios. Most are completely viable for someone with just a bit of electric generation understanding. Most of them are survivable. Just think how much easier it would be to convince a terrorist to commit and act without risking their life or even their freedom.

I'm also a power engineer, and I've wondered if a sniper could go around shooting the bushings of HV Transformers. It would take quite a while to replace them, and if the shooter did it right, he could knock out large portions of the grid with relatively minimal output. Wouldn't even have to enter any power plants.

Only God can keep us safe, and He indeed does, as long as the people don't turn their backs on all that is godly. It is time to get right with God folks, the time is NOW, because tomorrow is not promised us. Get right with God, study your scriptures, pray for understanding and discernment, learn better and do better as you learn. Ask for forgiveness, and leave your mistakes behind you. Pray always.🙏🙏🙏❤ Do what God lays on your heart, always follow that still small voice described in scriptures, some call it a gut feeling. Always listen and harken unto that still small voice, and heed what it tells you. God knows everything, and we do not. In God we trust.

It's incredible that no one is thinking about this. It presents a very soft target for the forces that hate us. If this was to happen...our country would de-evolve into a brutal mess in a very short time. I think it is only a matter of time...

Thank God we are so concerned with moronic athletes who won't stand for the National Anthem or about an election cycle with two absolutely horrible leading candidates, one of which is guaranteed to be our next president. Between a cyber attack or a CME or a EMP Burst Weapon or the election... We are in really bad shape. Lord help us....

The problem with journalism these days is that there is no longer any such thing as an unbiased journalist, for example everyone loves to FOX News shit for being biased but every news provider now has a hard core bias, it's just that FOX is pretty much the only one on the conservative side.

I like the book I only wish you'd gone into ways to survive such a situation he could've mentioned how the Amish wouldn't be affective very much as their lifestyle isn't very dependent on electricity He also could've recommended magazines like the "new pioneer magazine "or books like "gardening when it counts "by Steve Sullivan organic gardening magazines or other books like grow or die the good guide to survival gardening by David the good great where is the feed your family after such an event He also could've mentioned KZbin videos about rocket mass heater's or rocket stoves or clay oven's all of which could quickly and easily be put together and would help us survive such an event to bed America doesn't do any planning like this no one's actually think about it and come up with answers to these situations are us Preppers Like I said earlier it's a good book but in the end of the book he should come up did his research on ways to survive such an event instead of just scaring people

When he talks about only the internet being the only way to do it, he's really meaning SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) and in turn various communication networks. Part of this might run over the public internet, however, it will be secured with VPNs etc and the designers will make a judicious choice regarding what is/isn't exposed. Other parts might rely on private RF links. All of these things (private, public) are built on well-designed protocols, however, vulnerabilities and room for poor design or processes are how the exploits can happen.

Until this book, the topic was shunned by main stream media. Why is it more credible or poingant with Ted Koppel? This has been a shortfall for years and we're still fine. Even with power down, we are an adaptable society capable of great acts of societal empathy and dogged strength/determination, and work quite well in times of disaster. I dont think we would be the mindless, vulnerable automotons that this book would make us out to be.

I understand your comment, but power management systems are all now run by computer & or the internet. In an emergency such as this, it would take time & equipment that is no longer produced to convert back to “pre internet” power management. Even if the equipment were available, who would be trained to run it? Not only would there be a shortage of knowledgeable people, but who would report to work during such a calamity? When you stop to consider the tumble down effect of this kind of nightmare scenario, it seems quite clear how terribly exposed and unprepared we are. Even with a trusted journalist like Ted Kopel and his best selling book sounding the alarm, is America talking about this? Is Washington making plans? It doesn’t appear so. 5 years later, the only community that still seems to be talking about this is the “prepping community” and the Morman Church. The Media is still mostly silent, save a few brave journalists. Our Government appears to have this subject muted, and Americans continue to be distracted by the shallowness of social media. Kopel is right, America is a reactionary society who looks the other direction until we are smack in the middle of the problem. Use the pandemic as a recent example… Scientists have been warning of a coming pandemic for 100 years. Saying it’s not IF, but WHEN. Did we plan? No. In actuality our administration delayed, and worse, they denied. A prime example of “Too little, too late.” (Please note, this is not a political statement. My intention is not to point fingers at Republicans or Democrats. IMHO all are guilty.) Over a 1/2 million people are dead & counting. Why… because we failed to plan. America often reminds me of a petulant child. Refusing to learn a lesson despite being repeatedly warned and paddled. When will America learn? When will those we put into office act? Not until we force them to. How do we do that? By educating ourselves on who we elect into office, and by holding them accountable. We, the American people.. We hold the power, it’s not the other way around. I will continue to self educate, stay informed and press our elected officials to take our vulnerabilities seriously. We, the American people, must never forget “we have the power…” May God bless America 🇺🇸, and her future in these uncertain times. Stay safe my friends. - My sincere apologies for the long post. Clearly, a bit of of sensitive subject for me.

you mean we'd have to use generators , lanterns, oil lamps? drive big v-8 cars you just turn the key and drive for years without a light ever coming on dash or needing key FOB to start car? Have to write letters to communicate and put a stamp on envelopes to pay bills via mail? Forced to read books, newspapers? No more FaceBook? No more LADWP bills? Family time has become important once again? Sounds awful
