What would the cost be of replacing an entire grid? creating a micro grid? What's the cost of 1x transformer? How many transformers needed per grid?

Early on, the comparison was made to duck-and-cover drills, as an example of why defense doesn't work. The situation with the power grid is NOT like that. Making that comparison was a very bad idea. Deterrence obviously is useless, as Koppel totally acknowledged near the end. How do you even know whom to hold responsible? Defense, and mitigation, have to be the main means of protection. The real problem with the power grid was mentioned: Electricity has to be generated and consumed in lockstep, moment to moment. We MUST get away from that. Later, there was a passing reference to microgrids, but it never went any farther. Not just distributed generation, but distributed *transmission* and *storage*, are crucial to have any security-not just against hackers, but against solar storms and other natural disasters. Think of how the Internet works. Individual sites can be attacked, but to bring down the whole Internet is essentially impossible. It was designed that way from the beginning. The grid needs to work that way. Long-distance grid transmission needs to work like wahala-transmission only when rebalancing of generation and transmission needs to happen, to smooth things out over time. The present grid design totally made sense a hundred years ago, or even 50 years ago. And we can't change it all immediately. But to not be moving in that direction is just insanity.

Decentralization is the future for society and industries
@ronaldgarrison84783 жыл бұрын
@@bcaominh Yes, I totally agree. One more thing, though: While there is more and more decentralization, there will be more and more wide-ranging interconnection, eventually spanning the globe (as we already do with data).

Mobile generators would be deployed to water and waste pump stations. That would be priority one.

Energy transfer! If you go green then you don't need the old infrastructure.
