Reflected Light System
The Cine Reflect Lighting System (CRLS) provides a different way of lighting, using reflected light with a parallel beam to precisely direct the light. This creates a working environment which is free of cables, heat, and it is quick to make changes to the lighting. The results, using the CRLS system, have been described as producing "a very natural type of light."
The system has proven itself on many feature films.
This video - Reflected Light System - shows the CRLS system at work, the results which can achieved, and examples of how to use it.
Background to the Cine Reflect Lighting System
The Austrian Oscar nominee for cinematography, Christian Berger, has broken with the guidelines on the set regarding lighting. He looks at light in another way and uses only reflected light.
“My main intention was to invent a luminaire that would create beautiful light that would, at the same time, reduce stress on Actors, Directors and, of course, Cinematographers, while at the same time offer great flexibility,” Christian explained.
The idea of the PARALLEL BEAM SYSTEM is to avoid diminishing the light by “obstacles” (cutters, flags, scrims) and to replace these tools by special reflectors that can dramatically influence dramatically the shape and structure of the light that reaches a scene. For best efficiency, it is crucial to use the special reflectors with parallel light beams. (In other words, they won’t work as well with ordinary Fresnels or PARs.) The reflectors use specially calculated laminations and diverse coatings.

This system looks really exciting, but I am really amazed that even within the 24 minutes of this video there is not a single example where it is shown being used well. All the lighting is horrible in every scene. I don't understand if you guys are trying to keep your best kept secrets or what, but it would really encourage me to actually work with this system if I could see it being used well.

The quality of light from this system is very hard and unflattering. Even the largest 1m x 1m reflector is not big enough to produce a truly soft light.

It's a parallel beam light head (4° beam angle) and offers more than 100.000 lux on 5 meter distance. When using reflector #4 you have a softness like using a styrofoam. While reflector #1 acts like a mirror. The light head is just an an instrument. The magic happens with the reflector surfaces.

@@DedoweigertfilmDe thanks for your response. With a 2m x 2m reflector I could see the system achieving a good level of softness. There's no way to cheat the rule that a larger source is a softer source.

If it's diffuse you need flags. Controlled bounce just means it's not diffuse, just look at this video. I had hoped for perhaps a lenticular coating or even something akin to the privacy film on an atm screen. Unless someone can enlighten me, this is bollocks

Its a poorly made film and the explanation is not very clear. I've used the unit direct for Phantom shoots due to its high output / low heat. Its very good. The reflector system is just another way to utilise or convert the narrow beam. Neat, but you can achieve same effect with rosco soft / foam core etc.
