Cheers 🙏 I think this is a bigger issue than a lot of people let on. Especially the self builders and I think there’s more advice needed. I’m looking forward to follow up with them and see how it goes. John said he’s taking presenting courses in preparation 😂 I thought he did well.

Weight stuff is super interesting, not van stuff but I am doing a caravan rebuild, not too far off sorted 😬. I started because the weight and bulk of all the things in there was crazy. The cooker, heater, wardrobe, cupboards the doors alone on the cupboards was mad. Taken parts out replace electrical, water heating, units just more modern style looking forward too seeing the difference and how much simpler it will be. Thanks Sam

It’s frightening how fast it adds up in weight.

I need to be careful with weight too because of a motorcycle on the back and I need to carry a lot of water. I’m going with a dedicated block heater & calarifier for hot water as diesel is already available. Sandwich panel/ Alu lined. Nice to see another lightweight innovative build.
@ahoyleisure9 ай бұрын
yeah the calorifiers are great John. Ape uses those a lot. John has done his homework and I was really impressed. BlackRock Customs seem great too so looking forward to going back to see them partway through to see how they are getting on. I had over 60kg with a redundant spare wheel and two tool boxes alone. I thought I would be close but not over so it was a shock. I should have gone for a lighter ceiling!!! The Van Der Moon storage units are brilliant too and they have some new products coming out that I will be reviewing soon. I will be doing a re weigh in and detail what’s happened. Can’t believe I got a free weigh in too 😉

It’s commendable that you thought about the finished weight properly to begin with, and bought the appropriate base vehicle. Pretty much every other 3.5t LWB conversion you see should’ve started out as a 4.6 or 5.0t. All this uprating chat on YT is nonsense - they simply bought the wrong van in the first place and/or built out without any consideration to kerbweight until reality dawned. You’ll have much better dealer support too with a MAN than a Crafter: MAN are true 24hr commercial vehicle operators, not VW office hours car dealers that don’t like vans. Looks a very nice conversion. Can’t say I’m a fan some of the exterior add-ons: the rear light clusters are now completely obscured from angles where they previously weren’t. That’s not good.

I think there are a lot of self builders that don’t give it enough thought because they have so much else to learn. I’ve had a lot of messages today off customers asking for advice as they hadn’t had their van weighed yet. I think these videos will be great in bringing weight as a bit more of a talking point and allow people to understand the choices available. John has a set reason to hit a low weight which makes it even more interesting in the sacrifices he HAS to make. Credit to him as it adds pressure to his build making it public and gives us all a chance to share knowledge.

Great video can't wait to see how the build goes. Just ordered a lwb Man fwd and looking at all my options. Quick question on the Claton power bank, as i understand LPS 3000 is 160AH ! And you mentioned there is a add on battery coming. I can't find any info on that can you elaborate? Keep up the good work.

Thank you Craig 👋 They are arriving in March. I’ve a draft video explaining everything which will be out this month.
Sorry one more thing, who makes the composite sheets they sound great all other ones looked at are similar weights too ply although do have loads of advantages still similar weight.

That's great, thanks for following up. Such a choice on there, loads of nice stuff. I don't suppose you know which of the ranges it was exactly do you? I can see some which look close (Abet Laminati for example) but I'm not sure they'e the right ones.@@ahoyleisure

Honestly I think most peoples vans are over weight and everyone is being lucky the police do not check. I mean, for myself, just emptying my freshwater would lose me a lot. But I only have a B license, and I would just take my cat C. But my partner would then not be able to drive the van
@ahoyleisure4 ай бұрын
It’s not an easy decision. And that’s a prime example. Luckily we both have grandad rights so we are ok but there is a lot to consider. Speed limit changes, insurance, extra costs. There are a lot to fathom out.
