Great video lads 👍 As an engineer in R&D, it’s interesting reading people’s comments who don’t really understand how the automotive industry works. It’s an expensive game, and with cars/vans becoming more and more advanced and more expensive to manufacture you start to see stuff like this happening more often. Thing is, it’s not the first time VW have done this either, and it’s not the first Vw to be manufactured elsewhere - in fact a lot of VW and Audi models aren’t built in Germany. I’m interested to see how reliable the new unit is with this wet belt system. But people act like VW transporters are the most reliable things in the world and they’re really not (not from my experience owning T4, T5.1 & T6 any way). I’ve spent a few quid fixing them I’ll tell you, but T4 was probably my most reliable out the 3. Not to mention they’ve been using the same platform for the last 22 years with what has largely been facelifts & engine changes whilst other companies have made significant changes to their lineup. I’m keeping an open mind on it. I’m not in a position where I’ll be able to afford and experience one for a while but I’m looking forward to seeing them on the road and listening to owners’ feedback 👍

I think most people do understand how the car industry works, we have all noticed vehicles using the same platform, particularly in the van market. We all saw this coming when the Amarok got deleted, now a Ranger. This was an inevitable consequence of VW exiting the market due to the prospect of lekki van competition and the e-transporter flopped. One less R&D team to pay for too.

I totally agree. Great comments raised there. My Transporters over the years have had their fair share of issues too. We only get to hear about the most common one though. The Ford wet belt issue is spoken about a lot. 90% of these people's mates, cousins, husbands, bothers mate had a Transit that's wet belt went. When you dive into these actual issues, maintenance and usage are key. I'll be making sure our new Transporters and serviced and maintained to VW's recommendations. If so, any issues will be covered under the VW warranty.

@@THQAutomotive Add to that - for 'quality' that people go on about in Transporters, my 2022 Highline 6.1 misses quite a bit of spec when compared to my stock 2018 pre-facelift limited Transit Custom, no climate control, no heated seats, bare bulkhead. My T5.1 (before the Transit) was worse still. Overall - my 2018 Transit Custom was quieter, better to drive as an off the shelf offering, didn't clang like the standard 6.1 does.. All fixable, but it was not lightyears ahead in terms of quality - I have had more trouble with VW's and hear lots of horror stories of VW's being on their 3rd, 4th, 5th engine... The new owner of my old transit is still happily ticking by in it. The saving in outsourcing allows more kit to be standard fit in the Transporter (as is the case in the new shape Transit), which I see as a good thing - you get the backing of a wider platform with the combined might of 2 major automotive brands and a little ability to make it feel a bit more 'VW'

Exactly correct. The current VW Transporter has numerous issues, many of which are expensive to repair. ECU faults, sensor faults, and the big one if you want an auto, DSG gearbox issues which have horrific repair cost potential. Combine 4-Motion and DSG and you are buying a vehicle which may come with huge future repair costs.

I’ll be keeping my T6.1 personally. When I bought a new shape Caddy that is also a Ford collaboration I sold it after 3 months as I didn’t think the build quality was good enough. I had the feeling they aren’t going to age well and will depreciate too much as a result. I’ve owned Volkswagens up to now because they hold their value and I’m not convinced these new generation Transporters will hold their value.

Great video for providing the audience with the information on this new collaboration with Ford and the cross overs between the product. I do however think this will be the end of the following that VW have had with the proper Transporter T series. I get the fact that times need to move on and the chassis is 22 years old etc but it works (if it’s not broke don’t fix it). People love the T5-T6.1 even if it is just a facelift between the years and the odd change here and there, a proper built vehicle by Volkswagen themselves is what people want to pay the premium for. The transit will be the option for anyone wanting to go this route now unfortunately.
@THQAutomotive

Having owned a new Transit and seen the new Transporter, I'd buy the Transporter and not just for the badge. They are finished better and better equipped. There does seem to be a difference in finish coming off the 2 different production lines. Yes they are now made in Turkey for affordability, but VW are controlling the production. I'd personal rather a Turkish built Transporter than a German built vehicle at a considerable premium.

The likely improvement to the current engine, is to make replacing the belt cheaper and easier. Then set maybe a 40k mile replacement schedule for the belt. When the service schedules are published we should be able to see this. Operators of large van contracts and the lease companies will want the whole life service costs before they set their figures.

@exploresandtosummit I think 2016-2018 there was a bit of a issue however I think a lack of maintenance and long service intervals made it worse. Oil dilution is the issue for the petrol engined Ford’s with the wet belt, for the diesels it’s a lot more complicated. But basically the belt chemistry has to deal with oil immersion and all belts wear to one degree or another. Ford just overestimated the life of that belt, driven by a desire to be competitive on running costs, whilst adhering to the eco and noise regulations, which is why they went with the wet belt.

I have always been VW , had all the transporters and caddy’s , still have a modified t6.1 what I love . Bought the new custom for work and as a van it’s good , but the engine is a let down . Massively notice it is different . Loud , sluggish and lacks response . Luckily I have a sport mode I can put it in and then it drives a little better . My custom has a 136ps 2.0ltr engine - needs improving IMO . I’m not really fussed about the wet belt thing , keep on top of the servicing , and it’s not different at to any lottery with a mechanical engine IMO . New van looks great I think a lot of VW enthusiasts will hate the engine . All I can say is it drives like a transit because what I have is a transit . If VW can make it drive differently they are in for a winner . I’d rather drive my t6.1 over the new platform , no amount of features will change that .

I'm a VW fan through and through. Several Transporters a Polo, Golf, Scirocco etc. I dont mind paying the extra for German quality, unfortunately I'm probably the minority. I wish VW well with this venture. I have seen a similar scenarios with Motorcycles, example Honda having bikes made in Thailand and BMW having bikes made in India. Let me tell you, they are never as good.

Thanks for the video, guys. Very informative. I've been a volkswagen technician for 21 years now and a loyal vw Transporter van owner for the last 12 years, currently driving a 6.1. I get why volkswagen has had to do this now, and sooner or later, if you want to change your current transporter for a new one, what other choice are you really going to have. The part that annoys me is why volkswagen has allowed it to come to this. They've allowed there market share of the commercial vans to gradually decline while also not preparing for for a situation like this where possible they could of moved factory to a different location to reduced cost as ford have done. There are also thousands of workers now losing their jobs in the factory in Germany because of this. I accept this is the future, for now, and im sure I'll come around to buying a t7, but it is without doubt the end of an era for the vw community.

Fundamentally the engine diesel engine won’t be different. The only improvements i envisage are the to the cambelt itself or the dpf. There has been an improvement to the current belt already and a lot of models from 2018 were recalled. Ford also changed the service schedule from 10yr / 120k to 6yr /100k. It will be interesting to ask what the VW recommend as the service schedule. This should be a tell tale sign if things have changed. Other questions should be - does the T7 have an oil life indicator? It’s recommended that you should have an oil change when it reaches 20% . The oil life gauge is a smart device that accounts length / frequency of journey.

The rules on 3.5T driving licence are likely to change. EU 4th Directive on driving licences will mean drivers can drive heavier vehicles without having an additional test. This is to accommodate the heavier EV vehicles and not create a deterrent to getting them. The UK is very likely to adopt the EU 4th Directive, as it makes logical sense.

So chances are if I need a van after the T6, a last gen T6.1 would be on the cards. EV isn't on my radar either, the infrastructure isn't there nor the battery technology. Maybe in 20+ years but not at present. As for the wet belts, oil and 'some' rubbers don't mix, they swell. Hence the 'tool' ford produced to check belt width after they started seeing failures. You then have the fact any wear from the belt just goes back into the sump. Yeah you have a oil filter but the strainer will get clogged before it even hits the filter. At the time of buying the transit a similar spec transporter would have cost an extra £10,000, definitely not worth the price. I've no idea how the prices will compare between the new transit and the transporter but realistically they will both be decent vans. If you able to put aside your VW snobbery (I know its a real thing, been there done that) you could save yourself a few quid by just getting a transit instead . These cars have become so expensive that we need to have them more than 5 years. VW is famous for rusting, unfortunately. They rust on the inside of the bumpers (rear) as well as outside at the panels. Since VW has had these problems for so many years, they must be happy with it. The Vw van range has got a lot more confusing. What to eventually replace the ageing T5 day van with? ID Buzz -cool but very expensive and all electric so for now too limited in range /insufficient charging infrastructure. No, or only in the much longer term.. The Multivan; as a hybrid or diesel. It's a bit nerdy looking and needs converting right -but best proper new VW bus beyond the T6s. This, the VW Transit underdog -it's slightly better looking than the transit -but heart says not different enough has lowest 'snob' appeal and the dashboard is too Ford. Unless it proves a dynamic reliable gem and the wet belt is replaced... no. Or a newer younger VW T6 and keep it deep into it's old age -most likely!

@@THQAutomotive I admit I'm probably a luddite with my clinging to the T5/T6. If I drove one of VW's newer offerings I might be more of a convert. On those grounds maybe the T7 / New Transporter may fair well enough to convince me. On your electric focus point; it will be interesting to see how much of an issue the range /recharging infrastructure is. I'm a sceptic about that improving much over the next decade -but I hope I'm proven wrong. It depends on one's real world use of the vehicle and home charging situation..

So no straight answer for the engine tells me they have treid to fix a failed design. Some of the wet belt engines have had the cam belt changed to a chain BUT they left the oil pump as a welt belt. Blows my mind. Part fix. Waste of time. I have 5 Transit Customs. Engine replaced in one less than 3 years old, full hsitory and 75’000 miles. Under warranty or it would have cost me £7k plus Looks like I am driving my T6 Kombi 2016 as my forever van now as won’t be going anywhere near this New Transporter/Custom with panels and a dash change. Also I find it incredible to belive that with what they charge for these they can’t make money. Even to keep making the T6.1 as it was, design done, bugs fixed etc, just production costs? Really

My understand for no straight answer is, VW can't legal comment on their partners 'previous issues' Ford won't comment as that then admitting they previously had an issue. It appears VW and Ford are confident in what's this 'next generation' engine is.

@@THQAutomotive I totally understand that but they could tell you the spec of the NEW engine, what size it is, what power, how many turbos, if someone thought it was still a good idea to put a rubber band inside the engine running in oil etc

@@Smartie40. they engine outputs did appear on the screens last in the day actually. After we'd finished filming. As I said, I don't think the 'rubber band' is an issue when done right. Only manufacturers use a wet belt without issues I believe.

@@THQAutomotive Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and Ford are the only wet belt engines I know of and they all have the same issues. Ford is the biggest name so gets the most chatter, obviously but this is an issue that is going to get worse not better. They have made and sold these engines for a lot of years so there is a lot of pain still to come. So it will be interesting to see if VW are happy to going in the party on this one or if the engines do get a proper fix including the oil pump drive. Time will tell but this is a potentially expensive gamble and one I will not be continuing with. 5 customs with wet belts is enough all now on a vastly reduced service interval just for my own safety.

I understand the cost reasoning but i dont get it. The T5 through T6.1 has been a constant evolution rather than a re-engineering, so a lot if the cost must jave been absorbed over years and years. Also, looking at sales figures doesnt add up either, driving through germany, almost every van was a transporter and i reckon thats a larger total market than the UK. If they had used VW running gear i suspect there wouldnt be an uproar about it. What i also find odd is that surely they sell more transporters than amaroks, yet they managed to make a larger differentiation between that and the ranger

I suspect the August figures would be lower on Transporters due to them being discounted. Amarok will be higher as they are new ish to market and had a lot of pre orders. You do see a lot of Transporters around Germany yes. The custom far out sells all the others though. The fact is the production costs / cost of living / wages are so high in Germany. If the panel van was made there, the price of the Transporter would need to be way more than any of us would want to spend.

The T7 looks very nice but they need to make them a bit wider to accommodate the possibility of sleeping across the van.

For wider you need a Crafter. The Transporter is their smaller platform

@@THQAutomotive Yes I know about the crafter but still think If the T7 was that bit wider It would become more popular. I have a T5 and at my age It will see me out.

Guys your mouths are saying one thing but your faces are struggling to mask your and everyone else’s feelings. I’ve had vw vans from 1990. 2.4 LT PETROL a range of diesel ones, t 25 pick ups and vans, t4s and now my t5.1 you pointed out that vw has expressed THIS IS NOT A T7. But a new transporter. Looks like they are disengaging the “t 6.1 and previous as this is no longer going to be legendary. I found it almost patronising the new pick up is only vw. It looks cool but really! 99% of hard core transporter owners have and need the van.

Really interesting video, thank you 👍🏼 I embrace change and never had a problem with what VW did with the styling changes on the Transporter but WTF are VW doing with that grill? It looks like an old Peugeot or Vauxhall Nova 🤢 it looks cheap. The Caravelle looks a bit better. I think if you guys can bring out a new front grill that stops it looking like a burns victim would be a a huge improvement! As for the wet belt thing it clearly still uses one 🫣 all be it modified. If it didn’t they would be shouting from the rooftops about it!

We can make them look sexy, don't you worry 😉 A wet belt isn't an issue if they know why they break and how to stop it. VW seem confident in their testing 🤞
