Lightweight real world interactions with the Physical Web - Google I/O 2016

+Scott Jenson (in a similar demo) mentions first pulling up a physical web page, but then being able to enable a push notification. (example: pull up the webpage for the bus you're on, and then indicate the stop you want to get off at and enable a push notification for said stop). How does this push notification work, technically? Is this coming from the webpage running in the background or does this leverage some additional functionality with the physical web browser?

Wait but don't we have NFC for this? Maybe I am just being stupid but what's the difference between this and putting a URL on a NFC tag?

I believe the difference is broadcasting range. NFC has a range of up to 10cm, while Physical Web is based on bluetooth and has a much longer range of meters (possibly hundreds of meters, depending on beacon type used). Also, due to the range of NFC, this requires you to know where the NFC tag is. For a bus stop, you would have to know exactly where the tag is and tap on it. With physical web, you could be across the street from the bus stop and see it in your list of nearby physical web pages. Finally, NFC requires you to tap on a tag, without seeing any kind of preview of what to expect. Physical web will display a list of one to several nearby web pages that are available to interact with, and don't require tapping anything like with NFC. Hope that helps and makes sense - it helped me thinking through the differences as well!

Are beacons always needed / could the same be done using GPS coordinates in many use-cases? Definitely some use cases where having integrated devices help (e.g. anything moving or which has more interaction than simply providing a "link to content" interaction).

Could beacons interact with one another? Boring use case; setting up personal beacons for a dating app (e.g. happn like experience). More interesting use case: Hitch hiking / couch surfing app where someone travelling states their rough destination, drivers running the "Dentrassis" app spot them and pick them up, then their Dentrassis contact passing vehicles's Dentrassis gradually working out a spontaneous route until they passes a couch surfer host's home in the early evening..

+John Bevan GPS could work some time but the key issue is that it requires a centralized database. By using URL beacons, anyone can allow anything to be found. As to beacons interacting with each other that's possible but not part of the Physical Web. Physical Web beacons just send out a URL, their goal is to have the phone to all of the work. That's one reason they last so long compared to other beacons as they broadcast relatively slowly, using little power

+Scott Jenson Thank-you. Regarding the database, it sounds like the proxy (@ 7:45) has this database already. The difference is the beacon triggers the user's device to contact that proxy rather than the user's device sending out its GPS coordinates every X minutes/seconds to pull back and cache a list of results (based on location, security filters & user's preferences), then filter them as the user moves around within that sample's area. An advantage (also a disadvantage) of GPS is anyone can tag anywhere in the world without investing in hardware, no effort to get to the location to install the device / no infrastructure dependencies / weather proofed / risk of being stolen, etc. Agree that there are a lot of good use cases for beacons too / that sometimes it'll be more efficient to have devices trigger the call out than to constantly broadcast GPS coordinates fetching lists of data each time, depending how "busy" areas are. I guess the ideal would be to see the beacon as one possible trigger of location awareness services, alongside (older / now redundant?) NFC tags / QR codes, barcoding apps, and GPS awareness functionality. EDIT: Actually, I think that was your point @29:00; i.e. the beacons themselves are just a small part of a wider infrastructure.

but that database is only tied to our specific scanner. The Opera browser has its own and so will other scanners. The point is that they all don't require the same database

+John Bevan BTW, I'm not against coming up with a GPS based method of finding things as it could easily augment the BLE results. I would just want to do it based on top of the web (using JSON+LD for example) so anyone could build the same database.

But why this instead of QR-codes or NFC? You don't even know to expect a physical web site nearby if there aren't tons of signs up to showcase it.

Google's latest version of Android on the Pixel phone integrates the physical web much more. If you find yourself checking "Google Now" (or on Apple, the "Today" page I think it's called) that's where you'll find nearby web pages. Scott is anticipating this as a new behavior that we start having with the world around us - glancing at our phone or wearable to see what smart things are broadcasting pages for us.
