I'm also running the FR RTT, and dig your mod, particularly the ladder mod. Well done. I wanted to ask about your mattress set up. Are you using two Exped Megamats? As I understand it, they are 25.6 inches wide. Putting two side by side is over 50 inches, which is about two inches wider than the interior of the tent. In your opinion, how's the fit? I am looking to remove the existing mattress to reduce weight. Thanks for any input.

Hi Dan, I had to use 2 different ones linked here… geordiejimny.com/sleeping-in-the-suzuki-jimny#best-1-person-mattress I generally camp on my own but if my wife joins me both single mats fit in the front runner tent. Or go for the megamat duo 10 M 👍

Hi I took the cover to a local custom awning company. They removed the top section that had the ladder bump and heat welded a flat section on. We also shortened the height a few cm. For the ladder I did this geordiejimny.com/a-cheap-quick-release-diy-telescopic-roof-tent-ladder/

Do the rooftop and awning produce wind noise on a highway cruise?

I guess it is louder but it’s noisy regardless at higher speeds. Being so blocky I don’t really notice it being significantly worse with the tent and awning on.

Check out the setup in this video from Germany. Looks like a custom roll cage with the rooftop tent fitted to it. I don't know the details, or if it's an option for the Jimny in Europe. Weight up high would still be an issue but it would not be on the roof of the car. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGmsqHiNpNuZj8U
@OutThereEquipped3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, never seen that done before on the new model. Still think there's more sensible routes to go without needing to permanently modify the vehicle. You can see how low the car sits with all that weight loaded on it. Personally, I'll try to keep overall payload well under the GVM of 300kg inc. passengers. The Jimny is mean't to be a lightweight nimble machine :)

@OutThereEquipped4 жыл бұрын
Sure I’ll no doubt have the tent out on the rain. Basically the windows have a cover that zips down over the bug nets to seal the whole thing up. You can leave them slightly open for ventilation and the top rain fly prevents any water from getting in.

How is your experience with the tent in Rain...?
@OutThereEquipped3 жыл бұрын
It’s okay. If the grey sides get wet they don’t wick the water away as well as the rain fly. I’ll fabsil gold the grey inner tent at some point. The original rain fly seems to do the job. In heavy rain you can get pools of water building on above the doors that if you’re not careful can really wake you up pouring down your back :) No leaks just have to be careful not to let the sleeping bag or mattress rest up against the sides of the tent in the rain if the grey main tent gets wet.

What is the fuel consumption with and without the roof top tent.
@OutThereEquipped4 жыл бұрын
Tricky one to know for sure as I've done way more miles with the roof tent set up on and the first 2k was a bit random while the auto was breaking in. Pretty sure some auto owners without any roof load get in the high 30's (38-40+ mpg) I'm getting ~32 mpg with the set as seen in the video around town since adding a better air filter and not done any longer distance driving recently mate.

What do you think of camping in a tent like this one vs. a normal one and also vs a camper?
@OutThereEquipped4 жыл бұрын
Roof tents are super convenient. Ground tents are often spacious and easier to get in and out. We hired a VW camper for my wife's birthday once. Amazing! But more restrictive on where it goes. Sleep quality wise no matter how expensive the roof tent or tent is unless I use a good quality mattress, sleeping bag and earplugs, i'm in for a restless night. Personally i think it all comes down to how quickly you can to be able to get set up and what your needs are. Also hammock camping is arguably the most comfortable nights camping if you get the hang right. Particularly if you don't have a 10cm+ insulated mattress. Hope that helps
