LIgNEouS 1 for Marimba and String Quartet by Andy Akiho

Vic Firth presents "LIgNEouS 1 for Marimba and String Quartet" (2010) by Andy Akiho. LIgNEouS was commissioned by John and Astrid Baumgardner for the 2010 Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.
Performers include:
Ian Rosenbaum (marimba), Edwin Kaplan, Mariel Roberts, Domenic Salerni and Liesl Schoenberber.

IAN ROSENBAUM
Still only 23 years of age, American percussionist Ian Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. As a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra Ian performed with many of the worlds most noted conductors, including Charles Dutoit, Valery Gergiev and Zubin Mehta. Tours with this extraordinary orchestra comprised of musicians from around the world took him to the major concert halls of France, Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
The following season, he successfully entered the realm of solo marimba performance making his Kennedy Center debut in Washington D.C. and later that year garnered a special prize created for him at the Salzburg International Marimba Competition.
However, it is in the sphere of chamber music performance that Mr. Rosenbaum has achieved his greatest success. He frequently performs with the acclaimed So Percussion group and was the percussionist chosen for the Norfolk and Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festivals in successive seasons. At the conclusion of Yellow Barn, artistic director Seth Knopp said of Ian, "Ian Rosenbaum's music-making is informed by a wonderful intelligence, interpretive insight and prodigious control. But above all, it is his openness of approach that makes him an unusually sensitive artist and collaborator."

Hey folks - the mallets are just marimba mallet shafts with no heads on them, wrapped with a layer of moleskin. They can actually be quite loud! They do not damage the instrument, and yes that's a large rubber band on one of the low notes.

Hot damn this is awesome. Great use of more than just the bars for sounds, Mr. Akiho! It really makes this piece enjoyable to watch for people who wouldn't typically be interested in this style of music. Wonderful playing, Mr. Rosenbaum and Ensemble!

I really LOVE this piece and the execution of it its amazing :) im not quite sure what moleskin is (im from denmark) and how thick the layer is? just bought the piece btw! cheers

Moleskine is a brand of blister dressing. It's a thin felt with adhesive on the other side. Type in "Dr. Scholls moleskin" into google and you'll find it.
