There was a teacher at our school, Mrs. Cookson. who used to make you stand in the corner with your hands on your head, then she'd wack your legs hard, with a ruler, and the n order you to stay in said corner for the rest of the class. We were all terrified of her, and she had the best behaved class in the whole school!! That was back in the 1970's not that long ago.

We've gone from one extreme to another! I don't avocate the above, but what can we do to enforce discipline nowadays? I ask because in Montréal, there's a story that was on every teacher's lips: a student answered her cell during an exam; the teacher confiscated it; the student demanded it back; teacher said no; student threw a glass of water onto teacher's face; student's parents attack teacher for taking cellpone; student suspended for 3 days and back in teacher's class; teacher resigned.

Teachers need to be supported from above. These are the rules and these are the consequences end of. I don't think physical punishment needs to be brought back (although I know a couple of boys who would benefit from it!) but teachers need to be supported, teachers should not have resigned throwing a glass in someones face is not executable behavior that pupil should have been expelled at the very least if not reported to the cops for assault. If the parents attacked the teacher than charges should have been brought against the parents

It is good to have discipline to have well-behaved kids in the classroom but this method of punishment is too much. It's abusive, brutal and cruel. It is better to either cane the kids or send them to detention.

bromancerules28 Cane the kids?! At this point, the evidence is in, there is no room for opinion on this: PHYSICAL ABUSE CAUSES PROBLEMS, IT DOES NOT FIX THEM. There is literally no need to ever strike a child. There are a wide variety of non-physical (i.e. non-abusive) methods of guidance and discipline that are completely effective. Children who are hit do worse in school and are more likely to commit crime as adults. The statistics are even worse for children who are hit with an object (for example, *caning*). So not only is physical punishment not necessary, it is *counterproductive*. It does the opposite of what people claim they are intending to do. So, to anybody who hits their children: YOU CAN STOP NOW.

The teacher objected to the student returning on the grounds that it would be a signal to the others that if they wanted a three-day holiday, this was what to do. I don't advocate the strap or caning, but students have to show respect to their elders. Many people refuse to go into teaching because of these disciplinary problems. Think! We may be shortchanging our kids because we're afraid of disciplining them!

All that for just biting nails, fidgeting and messing with hair?? That’s a bit excessive punishment. I bite my nails and that is due to anxiety. This is just not necessary and make anxiety worse especially for a child. Glad they took that away nowadays. That is what we abuse. Children can’t sit still for long long hours. They are hyper and have to move their fine motor skills. This just prevents fine motor skills to develop properly. Plus this is not a good idea for those with ADD or OCD behaviors that were discovered in the 1700’s. They just didn’t know how to handle kids with special handicaps right. At least now we have treatments that we don’t need this type of abuse.

It really wasn't that far back that they paddled or hit kids with a ruler in Catholic school. When I was in 3rd grade I can remember having to stand on my head against the wall granted using a gym matt but omg i was si dizzy my head throbbing for a good portion of Gym class with Gum on my nose because the nun caught me chewing!

When I saw this video I was pretty surprised on your degree-This should be a Step 1 or Level 1 type thing, but I dont like "fidgeting" or "twirling your hair" because twirling your hair, if they are doing it on purpose, go ahead.
