I think what a lot of people do not catch is that apparently Kiryu knew he had cancer since he woke up from his coma after Yakuza 5, which would make sense. The doctors probably checked him from head to toe to see if there was anything else wrong with him, and that's how it got discovered. So Kiryu knew about during the events of Y6 and Y7 (including the soon releasing side-game), which adds a lot to the ending of Y6. Kiryu propably brokered this very unique deal in because he knew his days were numbered anyway (Which also explains his general attitude in that game). Basically he started to work for Daidoji to both save his family and friends while also believing it might be a "one way" ticket to a dangerous mission so the cancer wouldn't slowly eat him away.

I have a feeling this story will be about Ichiban taking up the mantle as the new dragon. Kiryu has been a mentor to Ichiban and Ichiban has so much potential as well share the same ideals as Kiryu. Ichiban has the karp marker which indicates he will one day become a dragon and this could be his trial to test if he has what it takes to become the new dragon. This also makes sense to take place in Hawaii as Hawaii is known to host trial by fire traditions. This could be a passing the torch story and im ok with that.

It's funny, despite all the crazy shit the series has done, especially since the gaiden game has Kiryu being a secret agent with all that entails, him dying of cancer is somehow the LEAST believable part of it all. Not because he's Kiryu, but because the Daidoji faction has shown that they have the manpower to make things like rocket shoes and exploding cigs. So them having a cure for cancer or at least a way to treat it is much more likely.

I love how throughout the Yakuza series, certain timelines have specific culture and societal quirks to them. From Yakuza Zero everything was back in the old days where Phones weren't mobile and you could do a lot of sketchy shit and not get caught. Every game after that shows how society evolves, Phone Booths getting removed, improved security and law enforcement lowering crime rate, Yakuza Clans slowly dying out and being replaced by wannabe street thugs. It's such a fascinating detail that no one really pays attention too.

What gets me is that it would be so easy to reveal Kiryu alive and still stay alive yourselves. Kiryu knows a secret that idk what that would do if it were true in real life. Like A Dragon as a series has been pretty good at continuity so I'm not gonna jump to conclusions. THAT said i only have one question I pray they answer: what of Sota Kume?

Seeing that bombshell of Kiryu having cancer made my heart drop and is gonna hurt a lot I lost my nan to cancer and ive seen what it does to people, from when I found out she had it to about a month or so later, you could make out the bones in her arms and shit, seeing what cancer does to people first hand hurts, especially when its to someone you care for Kiryu having Cancer is gonna leave a lasting impact, he's finally started a fight he has no chance of winning, when everyone at morning glory and Haruka, her boyfriend (or husband, idk) and their child Haruto find out, god I hope to fuck we dont see how they will react, that would break my heart

I'm relatively new ( ~2019) to the Yakuza franchise so I only recently started 7. To hear Kiryu say that he's dying of cancer was like a someone grabbed my heart and gave it a good squeeze 😢

Yah know, I played the Yakuza series thinking it was just gonna be another video game, but I didn’t expect a literal crime opera filled with drama, brotherhood, despair, family, and diving into existential questions about life.
