The AiPaper just got the first firmware update (R2.7.3) since my test and I noticed Viwoods added things I suggested in my review: - You can now add your own custom prompts to the AI context menu and they also added the general chat-window with the context-screenshot. With both options you can now do very specific prompts tailored to your content, which is honestly much better than just having the pre-defined options from before. - You can export all pages from within a notebook (instead from just outside in the overview) - They added a highlighter pen option (didn't suggest that, but still welcome 🙃) Surprisingly quick turnaround on added new features. Let's hope they keep at it 🤞

I'm eagerly waiting for the comparison between this AIpaper and the upcoming A5X2... Carta 1300 seems so cool also in terms of lag and I wonder which is the best option to enjoy my pdfs through annotations and zooming in/out, mangas and epubs at best

I'm into ebooks and pdf editing, so the least lag possible and fast refresh rate... should I wait for the a5 x2 or get this one? I'm still wondering why such devices have hard times handling pdfs... I need the annotations to be saved on the PDF itself in different layers. From the review it seems the Viwoods only saves the annotation as JPEG in a different file. Please clarify if the annotation made can be saved on the PDF itself so that when the file closed and opened back again does it still have the annotations ? Thanks

I’m starting to stress out with all the eink notebooks coming out all of a sudden. I wonder how this compares to the supernote nomad or A5x. Conflicted about waiting for the A5x2 or just go with something like this 😅😅

Yeah, there's really a lot going on right now and I suspect it'll only get more crowded in the next 2-3 years. Generally I'd say the A5 X2 will definitely have the better note taking organization tools. There are many smart solutions to make notes easily searchable/filterable, which is incredibly helpful if you use it for studying etc. I think the Viwoods AiPaper is incredibly impressive in terms of hardware and also surprisingly polished when it comes to software. But from a pure note taking perspective, it's not as good as Supernote's system (no searchable text notes for example). If note taking is not the no.1 priority and you want Android app compatibility, then the AiPaper is better. It just went up on their website and can be bought with PayPal, so that should be a pretty safe purchase (just mentioning it, because the crowdfunding aspect of the device was a downside imho).

I don't care about thin. But I do care about how light it is. Very nice. Update: I made a comment that it is not WACOM capable. But it is. It is a WACOM screen, but the shipped pen is not a WACOM. See comment.

Sorry if that was unclear - it does have a WACOM touchscreen, but the pen nibs are just differently built than on most other devices. So you can use other WACOM pens if you like.

Thank you for an excellent review. It is really interesting how much they got right in the first go, which makes me really wonder who's actually behind this company. But as you mentioned, I'm more curious to see if they ship and if they will maintain the software after they ship at all. I'm not even going to go into the "AI" concerns I have personally, but thanks for covering that very throughly especially the long term concerns. This is just begging to have a non-optional subscription be introduced.

Thanks! :) In these past few days, Viwoods has maintained good communication with me, thanked me for the feedback, and promised to include improvements based on my suggestions. Let's wait and see, but for now, I'm cautiously optimistic. They've already released at least two updates before the device even shipped, so it seems they are indeed actively working on it.

@@ChalidRaqami I'm glad to hear that their updates are flowing. My long term concern is will they update after it ships. I understand this is a new player in the space, but historically lots of e-ink device makers disappear, assuming they ship at all. If they release a second device will this one get any updates at all, even as small as bug fixes or security updates. Or will it be "abandoned" as soon as it ships. For all of Boox's faults, weird software and update decisions, they DO update their software for years on older devices. I was able to get a Lumi 2 for an amazing price and great condition and can actually update to the latest firmware. (I shouldn't because it's so buggy on the Lumi per Reddit, but it's there and one assumes they will fix the bugs.) Impossible to tell now, but here's hoping... but with caution.

Is there a way to take a notepad note that's associated with a pdf, rather than just drawing directly on the document's white space?

They claim that the entire unit can be encrypted. Is that true? they also claim that Users can install onedrive and google drive with full functionality, including the option onedrive provides to have some folders accessible offline, is that true? and how would cloud synchronization to onedrive interfere with the encryption of the data? I see AI, youtube, and apps, painfully interacted with through e-ink, and I'm convinced RM2 made the right choice. This is too much in the middle, where everything ranges from average to annoying. If you want to stack apps, connections, interactions, windows on top of windows, then get a real pad (edit: or use your phone), those examples are embarrassing.

So text conversion for note searching does not happen on the device? Not sure if that is for me. One question: How fast is the global note search? Does the device create a searchable index that allows for quick keyword searches? And if so, is this index stored on the device or does it always require online connection?

You can add tags to notes and quickly filter them with the search functions. That's super quick. But other than that, there's no handwriting-search-function. The handwriting conversion is essentially a one-time AI-prompt that you can either copy and paste somewhere or share, but it's not added to the page automatically to make it searchable.

Yes ... if they can't change it (maybe already too far in the production process?), I would also recommend not using it. I sent Viwoods an email mentioning this issue specifically. Let's see if something comes of it.

Remarkable 2 for ease of use, Boox Go 10.3 for best flexibility and Viwoods AiPaper for being in between the two and if you're willing to experiment a bit.

Loved this tab but My only question is me with scribe and remarkable I use my phone to transfer my pdf from the phone to the tab . How can i do that here ? Any viviood app will be available?

There's a web-app available. So you can log in from your browser and download / upload documents. That already worked without issues in my test.

No news on that - but Viwoods acknowledged a couple of other things I mentioned in the video, like the PDF annotation issues, the pen design and notetaking in ebooks.They promised to fix some of those in the next update. So they are listening to feedback - but let's see what comes of it.

Does text recognition also work in other languages? I ask for german texts.

Yes, it does work. Just keep in mind, it's sending the pages to ChatGPT if you trigger the text conversion. And because the whole UI is English and the default AI-prompts are also English, it's not be as accurate with the language sometimes. The best way to tackle this is to create your own custom prompt in German and tell it to translate the page, something along the lines of "Übersetze den deutschen Text auf der Seite". Viwoods added the feature to add your own custom prompts after my review.

Yes, as long as they use WACOM technology you can use other styluses as well.

Boox Go 10.3 for the software and Viwoods Ai Paper for the hardware :D But having said that, hardwarewise it's not a huge difference, but in terms of software Boox offers a lot more options.
