Back when I was playing full time we constantly ran into players working for $75 plus tips. They’d been playing for years! They always told us, “ya gotta pay your dues.” Bullshit. We were packing the house on Mondays and Tuesdays. We were due! And we got paid or we walked…with our crowd.

I like what you said about some musicians. They like hearing they've been touched by God, but they gotta have their money. Took some lessons from a guy gigging, a good player, so when he said he needed some work done on his house (because he was too lazy), I turned him on to my home repair buddy, who he then screwed out of $1000. I quit taking his useless lessons and quit following his gigs. Some really are money "vultures." That is very true.

Hi Jimi, I have your Hot Licks jazz video from the 80s. I'm not really a jazz player but was looking to learn more about the form. I liked your speed and presentation. I'm two years younger than you and got into rock music, whereas you kept your focus on jazz. I understand that you had hard times with vultures -- there is a lot of competition in music, apart from the phony musicians that are constantly saying “I love you.” So the love spiel wears thin and is just generally BS. Sad, but musicians are powerless... last to get paid, etc.... and yet it all comes from them. So I respect your spirit and soul. Keep fighting the good fight.

I agree on the bridge. Ive put roller tunamatic bridges using heavy chromes. More articulate a better harmonic range. Treble And Bass. So better chunk and in a sense warmer.

It becomes a race to the bottom with these “vultures”. I used to make on average, $120-$140 a gig back in 1980! The AF of M would fine you if they caught you working under scale and/or with non-union cats. Today I would rather play at a friend’s house for free than play at a public venue for $75. The public venue makes money selling food and drinks. The musicians are being exploited.
@frankdiscussion20695 ай бұрын
Yes, I have been playing for almost 50 years and these bars/clubs/venues are still paying the same shitty money they did 40 years ago around here. A fucking DJ gets more money than a live band with real musicians. Meanwhile the club makes 5k and pays the band $200. It's a joke.
@kenster35545 ай бұрын
@@frankdiscussion2069 I am with you 100%. You know what’s even worse than a DJ? Guys that go in and play “solo” along with sequenced tracks and loops. Non caring patrons see one guy up there and hear what sounds like a nine piece band. I wonder if the Blue Note will let me show up and play along with a Jamie Aebersold CD. 🤣
@DonFonzarelli-uq9yx4 ай бұрын
@kenster3554 i used to do that, not as a 1 man, but as a duo and a 4 piece. Bass and drums were programed. I have watched several 1 mand bands as well. At the end of the day, doing it that was is just easier, usually more profitable. Less people to deal with.

ALL the chords are a cake walk to play, it's tying them in with the notes that eludes my capacity. And the damn names, I can't remember all that! I can only name the basic chords and the open strings... Beyond that, it's just remembering a multitude of chord shapes. Now, the playing is giving me golfers elbow because of the damn statins. Speaking of which... Hey, Why are you smoking again? Stop! Those damn things were causing soft fatty plaque to plug up my internal carotid arteries! My right one had a 99% blockage till they sliced open my neck and scooped the crap out via carotid edartectomy. Left side is still under 50% blocked. Dump those damn artery clogging choke sticks. 😅 I used the timer method and Copenhagen chew to fill in when I just had to have smoke. That chew is nasty stuff but it helped me kick all the nicotine.

no the worst thing is if a guy gets a $75 gig and then he comes up and tells you I live owner doesn't think you're bringing enough people in and offers the owner $50 a man! What a loser. So it's guys like that that are lowering the wages for the other musicians. Because the owner is going to fire you or keep you depending if he likes you or not and it don't matter how much is paying you because it ain't that much anyway hello

Yep I know a bass player who spent 10-15 years in music school and the university of Miami jazz program and got his PhD in music and is an adjunct professor at a local university...he'll steal a $50 gig....LMAO What's sad is that these clubs and venues still get away with paying such shitty money after all these years and meanwhile they rake in $1000's every night in booze sales.
