Lil Anderson, acting chief executive of the Office for Māori/Crown Relations spoke at ANZSOG's Reimagining Public Administration conference on February 20.
Ms Anderson presented as part of a plenary on International perspectives on Indigenous affairs and said that New Zealand’s Waitangi Treaty grievance process, which began in the 1970s, was now close to completing all treaty settlements and giving Iwis control over land and resources.
“The solution we reached through negotiation was one where both parties were willing to move forward. We are doing great stuff but we are at the start of a long journey."
Ms Anderson has more than 25 years’ experience spanning the public service and wider state sector.
