One million Tutsi were murdered in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, yes including Paul’s father. Stromae didn’t know until he was 12 because his family didn’t know how to tell him. He never got to know his father as he left Brussels when Stromae was 2 years old. So not thousands of others, closer to a million.

I know it might not be the case in Korea, but I think in the west and in France, many grow without a dad (or a mom it could happen also, not all dads are bad). From my friends and I alone, most of them had their dads absent, leaving their families. And I have a little half brother, his dad also left so I guess it's a pretty common 'issue', a sad issue. Every time I hear this song I think mostly about how my brother felt, because he is a man and I guess it left a big hole in his heart.

Really thoughtful analysis! If you like stromae’s music and artistry you should check out his latest album multitude- he took a long break after Racine carrée, and it’s evident that he developed hugely both musically, as an artist and as a person. Especially: la solassitude, fils de joie and l’enfer. Maybe also of note is “c’est que du bonheur”, à song about how much he loves his son and how difficult parenting is. Happily, it seems he broke the cycle of mannequins! One of his skills is his genius lyricism, and it’s a shame that a lot is lost in translation. As well as really artfully constructed phrases and wordplay, he has a gift for summarising complex topics in a relatable way in only a few sentences. Also, his early “leçons” are very entertaining, and the Montreal live performance of Racine carrée is phenomenal!

Le père de Stromae a été assassiné dans le génocide du Rwanda pendant la guerre civile. Tragédie qui n’a pu que traumatiser Stromae. Pour moi dans la vidéo le mannequin qui ne change pas représente en effet le père qui ne reviendra jamais malgré l’envie qu’a l’enfant d’avoir un père comme les autres et de partager avec ce père. Peut-être que l’enfant rêve de tout ce qu’il aurait pu faire avec ce père définitivement absent puisque mort dans d’atroces conditions ( les Tutsis comme son père ont été massacrés à la machette lors du génocide par les Hutus,l’autre ethnie du Rwanda.
