I used the opportunity of being ill to have a bit of a break from these. But I'm back with more reactions. More XXXTentacion, more NF, more Juice, more Ren coming up....

I hope you're doing better now. Thank you for also checking on French spoken culture. I'd love you to react to "uninvited" by Ren (preferably the lyrics video) because I'm totally opposed to all the reactions on YT. I don't find the song funny, at all. I won't tell here why, not to taint your judgment. Greetings from France.

Of course this refers to his father from Rwanda. The guitar sound is Lingala Soukous style from Congo .. (Which is fantastic music byt, esp. from the 90s, with names like Kofi Olomide , Kanda Bonog Man ).

Stromae does that all the time, combining serious topics with catchy music. Stromae's father was killed in Rwanda but his mother told him his father was away at work. The song and video itself can fit various scenarios for why the father is unavailable, though. It is actually Stromae in the video. He has a lot of great songs, just the translation is tricky at times as he likes to do word plays that only work in French. I think as a therapist l'Enfer and Carmen would be some other interesting songs from him for you.

Thanks for this one! It's pronounced [Stromai] derived from 'maestro' but a lot of people, mainly english speaking, tend to call him [stromay] as well. He's our Belgian genius and everything done by him is done to perfection.

5:00 I think here Stromae uses "bouffer nos doigts" (to eat our fingers) to alter (in a stronger and less formal way) the french expression "s'en mordre les doigts" (to bite your fingers) which means having remorse or deeply regretting something.
@Malfehzan Жыл бұрын
There's an expression in French: "Père manquant, fils manqué" which could be translated something like "Missing dad, messed son"... Pretty much the video's conclusion.

The first time I saw/heard this my heart was broken. I don’t speak French and didn’t have subtitles but the detailed way he conveys the intent needs no words. Stromae, I think, is one of the most intelligent and amazing song writers,singer, musicians of the century so far. He has a very unique ability to illuminate the darkest but most common parts of humanity in a way that you’re not just hearing it, you’re feeling it. The subject matter is relatable even if not personally of cruelty, apathy, arrogance, ignorance set to incredible music that makes you contemplate his words/imagery. I can’t say enough good things about him. If more people heard his music and were able to see from a different perspective or at least become introspective and push biases aside the world would be a better place.

10:19 I feel like what makes this one stand out so much partly because of the video. The layers of meaning and the artistry and the storytelling in the video are extremely powerful in hammering home the meaning of the song. Stromae is incredibly good at making his videos and performances convey the messages in his songs. You should check out both the music video and the live version from Coachella for his song “L’enfer” for a prime example of that. The live version gives me chills every time I see it.

Stromae’s lyrics obviously has a lot of layered meanings and metaphors from the French language that are hard to translate, like the part about counting your fingers or sucking your thumbs. However, I think you’re also right on about those metaphors in the sense that it goes from naively waiting, to the anxious realization that the parent might not be returning. I also saw someone suggest you listen to Fils de joie, and I fully agree. It’s a wonderful song, beautiful lyrics and video with a lot of layered meanings.

In the end you were wondering what made this song reach a billion views; I am guessing it's the whole package: the juxtaposition between the music(upbeat) and topic (heavy), which he always does, the epic choreography with the world's best crumper, the unique video in itself, as they all are, Stromae's voice, and last but not least the fact that Stromae is not a one-trick-pony. He is HUUUGE in the Francophone world. 'Tous les memes' and 'alors on danse' are currently almost at 500milion views. And as said 'l'enfer' (hell) would be right up your therapist alley

To add, what gets people watching is stromae himself. He has a gift with words... not all fully translate. But some words have several meaning. And he plays with those. That and the visuals, he is just a true artist. I hope you'll listen to more of his songs. He has a gift. He can talk about extremely hard subjects, in such a meaningful way. Pay attention on the dancers.. the girls are representing a single mother raising her daughter, then you have the passive manipulative father with an rebel son, then you have the happy step father with son, and last you have the abusive father. and then of course the absent father that's Stromae. At least that's my interpretation of the dancer's part.
@topenoel1931Ай бұрын
The dad never came back, the dance he had with his dad was just that his imagination of how his dad would have danced with him Yes you are correct, the symbolism could stand for 1. A totally absent father who never came back 2. A father who was physically present but emotionally absent
@ErwinBlonk9 ай бұрын
My father was physically present but otherwise absent which was a combination of his mild character and his upbringing. He died when he was 43 and I 23. For myself as I dad, I can say I did better (for one thing I wasn't an alcoholic and I was and am around for them) but was it good enough? One of my kids I found hard to connect with, which didn't keep me from loving that kid (I use strained language for privacy reasons for someone who can't tell the other side).

he lost his dad during the Rwanda Genocide in 1994 if i’m not mistaken. His father died during that period so Stromae only lived with his mom.

The other kids "dancing with their dads" is a kind reminder to not let yourself be manipulated into a life that your parents want you to live. The song itself is obviously about missing a parent, even if they are "at home" missing being a part of your life or are on their way to the next journey (dead). At least that's how I want to interpret it and that's excatly what me personally love about this song and mv.

This music always brings tears to my eyes because whether it's Dad or Mom, the fact of not knowing or losing one creates an ignorance, which could have been good or bad, something that we don't know. Personally, my father didn't want me, which means that I don't miss my father, "we don't miss what we don't know". My mother educated me with love and the best she could but what saddens me is when the only and last parent leaves and leaves the child alone, as Stromae says it's easy to have children but you have to take charge and educate them. A simple and complicated life lesson at the same time.

@mariaf.17327 күн бұрын
i think the "fingers" - first counted - maybe the excuses given (the mother gave some examples). Second eaten - maybe the hunger for "father", the desperation for his presence, (for he was asking is it enough to just make babies but not raise them, he's confronting the father's absence). Then again counting - this time father comes to be present (for people are hounding him, where is he, where has he gone?) after trying and trying to get his attention father finally listens and is "found" - maybe like hide and seek, as you said - except he's imagined a way to dance alone - imagining him with him, while still in fact being alone - making do without the father, ending up becoming just like him for that is what fathers do in his reality. /Maybe the last counting was the amount of times he imagined his father? Maybe it's not that deep, maybe it's just to get the yearning across, that he's starving for this father's attention. A fundamental need for him to have him around - that it gnaws at him - eats at him - that he's not there.

« Eaten our fingers » comes from a French expression « s’en mordre les doigts » meaning having regrets or remorse Also an interesting details to me is that the dad in a yellow suits seems authoritarian with his son and we can see the kid smilling. To me it shows that he’d want even a really flawed relation Nice vid 🙌👍

I feel a Canadian psychologist would have been better. The way the translation goes is a lot like a conversation between one from Quebec trying to speak to someone who speaks English. When it comes to eating you fingers bit it’s more of a sarcastic tone to it. It’s his way of stating that he wasn’t taught anything from his father so to him he feels like when he becomes a father he has learnt nothing since he was still sucking on his thumb
