The Y2K thing was a problem, but the reason why it wasn't a big deal was because a ton of money and manpower was spent before 2000 to fix the problem. So now everyone thinks it wasn't a big deal. But that is only because it was fixed beforehand.

Here's a good, harmless, example of how dangerous the Y2K thing was (without using an event in Y2K). Remember the Fallout76 video IH had? They didn't properly code in multiple years and some of the in game mechanics (I think it was the nukes) just stopped working when the year rolled over. If it wasn't for the manpower and time put in to prevent the Y2K event, then a lot of systems, financial or otherwise could if stopped working as well and it would be a lot less harmess than an in game mechanics failing.

In the UK if you own a television you "have" to pay a "telelicense" because their broadcasting (the BBC) is government funded and that is how they get the money for it. You have to go through the effort of showing that you do not use it to watch TV (like only for games or whatever) so that you don't pay the license fee.

The Y2K problem was a real issue, and could have had real consequences. Not world-ending by any means, but still quite significant. The reason it didn't happen is because we took steps to solve it, and we succeeded. It's the same thing with the hole in the ozone layer due to our use of CFC's. A lot of people think that wasn't a real problem, but it was very real. We simply stopped using CFC's, so the hole has stopped growing. It'll be a long time before it fully heals, but we at least took steps to stop it.

Well we didn't completely stop using them, the military was allowed to use them for a couple more decades for things like coolant in infrared sights (the Swedish RBS-70 SAM only stopped using Freon coolant in its laser system in 2011) and I believe halon fire suppression systems are still legal to use in aircraft and submarines because of how effective they are. And spacecraft because it kind of does't matter then.

YESS. The religious billboard thing! Recently went on a highway trip to south carolina. Very religious state. And all of the billboards were pretty standard. "Repent" "Love Jesus" Stuff like that. BUT ONE BILLBOARD TOOK THE CAKE. "Don't believe in Jesus? Don't bother. You're already DEAD" And my mother (who was driving) and I was like. "WOAH wtf! That's such a step up in extreme xD!"

World-ending prophecies are extremely common, especially in cults. There's many of them every year. When they inevitably fail, it doesn't usually reduce the followers' faith in the cult. On the contrary, for some of them it can actually strengthen their belief. They see it as a test of faith, and think that they must redouble their trust in the cult in order to find salvation. It's a pretty good showcase of some of the dangers of blind faith. When you base your entire world on faith, that's got a lot of potential for disaster. Faith has no self-correction mechanism. You can have faith in anything, but there is only one truth.

Also, Camping's massive spending was for the advertising. As for his character, its kind of hard to say. When it comes to religion, generally, you have, A: people who are open to different interpretations of the stuff they read/practice, tolerant of different point of views, etc., even if there is some resistance to that change. B: people who aren't as open to different interpretations of what they read/practice. This can be to varying degrees, from personal interpretation to word for word, but regrettably, the only examples that come to mind are the worst kind. Mainly, fanaticism/zealotry. I couldn't say for certain if cults also count, but I imagine there are some psychological things involved in that. There are also people who use religion to further their own goals. Whether those goals are good or bad, selfless or selfish, it could be a lot of things. You might also have people who "use" other people to further their own goals, for the same reasons/end goals. Could be vice versa too, where people with selfish intentions still end up helping others, though I imagine that occurs more in fiction than IRL. (I personally agree with the general core points of the 10 Commandments, but my parents would flip if they saw my search history lol plssomeonerelatewithme)

These types of things are usually solely a US thing and even then, most people in the US don't know half of these cause until IH's video on this particular one, I had never heard of Camping, but you can usually find one nutcase or another in cities like New York, Las Vegas, LA, etc that are wearing big placards going on about the 'end of the world'.

Thanks for sharing Lila. I look forward to your videos. I remember the billboards from this event, and I remember hearing about it on some history show. The main thing that I find hard to imagine is the family debt. It seems odd to rack up unmanageable debt when thinking about the long-term interests of your family. Even if you believed that the world might end, why would you create a scenario where you actually needed it to? Why would you not have some kind of fallback for the loves ones that were left behind? I suppose there was pet insurance, but what about people insurance...did they have some of that too? I think that that some events are mis-represented in hindsight. People can have honest & selfless motivations that are misguided. Some can even have a reasonable & scientific backing for beliefs, which are only established as "wrong" when seen from a future perspective. I think Camping was convinced about his righteous purpose and his methods. I doubt there was a specific desire for power over others, but there was surely a general high-minded conviction that diluted the value of attempts at dialog & reason, along with a lack of unbiased external checks-and-balances. The apparent corruption that showed up in hindsight, was probably more of an inevitable accumulation of small misunderstandings that were bolstered by a steady increase in influence and notoriety.

2:10 tbf y2k was real if not quite apocalypse territory, they just worked overtime to fix it. another such date is Jan 19, 2038 when seconds counted since 1970 will overflow 32bit integers which is arguably even harder problem (affecting more lower level systems than two year digits did) but at least they've started working on it a bit sooner

So, as a coder, it always annoy me how people (mostly pushed by the media) mock the 2k bug. They seem to miss the years of work we did to fix it, like it wasn't something that happen. Were we supposed to let everything break to prove a point? I think it shows that we barely talked about a much worse issue (size of ints with epoch time) that we also mostly fixed in time to avoid that situation. Also, side note, the Mayan calendar was just about the changing of cycle. Even by what we knew at the time, it was never about the end of the world, that was, again, the media...

The Mayan calendar thing was weird. Yeah the calendar reached its end, but so does the Gregorian calendar every year. Calendars just roll over. Why did people assume because there wasn’t an explicit digit that the ancients must have known something we didn’t know. Maybe having the wheel extend a thousand plus years into the future was enough for their daily living. There were never any actual predictions by them.

Oh, and the world did almost end in 2010s. There was a thing with a meteor. One of Australia's politicians actually admitted to the end of the world. Supposedly, it just narrowly missed us. Scary, huh?

Y2K was an issue. A lot of systems used 2 digit years such that after 1999 was 1900 because those that wrote such software years or decades ago assumed no one would still be using it by then (but were). You saw this a lot in sales and inventory systems. A lot of effort was put into fixing it, because it effected profits, and was largely successful with very few failures. One of my past jobs was helping fix a company’s sales system.

As for the numbers, there are common numerological concept applied to certain base numbers. Example: "10 is thought to be the most complete number, because it succeeds 1-9, and is equal to 1+2+3+4; circa some guy from like the 18th century." 5 is supposed to be the number of god's grace, his gifts to man; 5 fingers, 5 senses, 5 extremities (counting the head), etc. It is all nonsense, but it's not nonsense he just made up; he's siphoning other people's nonsense. I would also like to add that his description of the world ending is overtly his personal interpretation of the rapture; starting with people 'poofing' in to heaven, but then going off the rails into people getting left behind and being damned. Everyone remembers the poofing/accending part, and then forgets that afterwards a bunch of demons show up and hell and heaven fight a war for the future of the Earth. The folks who got left behind just have to survive that war in order to see the new world. The assumption is that Heaven will eventually win and then everyone who as good gets resurrected from heaven back to earth, along with the folks who survived Armageddon, and then a New Earth begins filled only with these righteous people.

Funny thing is the y2k bug kinda happened a decade or so ago for the ps3, every playstation stopped working, you couldn't install anything, couldn't connect to it's services, you had to change to clock to a day previous or after for it to function normally.

I grew up religious and I recall some scripture talking about how you can't know the hour or time God will return, so it's funny watching some people try to work it out. My mom has been saying God is coming back for 20 years at this point (usually pointing to how bad the world has gotten but honestly it's always been full of disease, crime, and war so can't really use that as a point of reference), and while I kinda do believe in a God, I really doubt it's anytime soon. If he exists, soon to him might be millions of years to us lol. Either way I think, barring the extremes, we should respect others beliefs.

Even more so, if you study the history of the supposed apocalyptic prophecies in the Bible (specifically Revelation) it's actually seditious literature about Nero disguised as a prophecy. In Hebrew gematria codes, the Greek shorthand for "Nero Caesar" (NRON QSR) comes out as 666 while the Latin ("NRO QSR") comes out as 616, which is also in some Bible texts. The Beast is given power for 3.5 years, the time Nero was persecuting Christians, and the "mark of the beast" may be a certificate of sacrifice to Caesar which was needed to conduct trade: it's possible Nero introduced this, since we have references to it existing in the time of Emperor Decius. The time is also right: Nero died in 68 AD, and Revelation dates to about then, and at the time there was a great amount of fear among Christians that Nero wasn't really dead. Most moderate Bible scholars find the idea that God would hand over a prophecy that would be meaningless to the people He gave it to and everyone else for another two thousand years to be absurd.

One of my favorite rapture theories is about how the 7 days of creation could be a lot longer because 7 could be a reference of some kind and "days" could just be a placeholder for anything. That theory extends to the 7 years following the rapture possibly being 7k and it maybe starting after Jesus. Putting us 2k years into a post apocalypse that's not ending anytime soon.

There is a theory that went around when the Sonic movie came out that the original design in the trailer was fake and ugly on purpose to get people's attention, and then later they would re-release the trailer with the correct version that they were always going to use.
