Aha, at 03:44 that makes me feel much better for you! Any professional knows that sinking feeling of a lost drive/batch/file collection... insert storm clouds over their lives... then that sunshine and rainbow that show up when a recovery program works! Question, is it worth doing a Full Format of a new SSD no matter who makes it? Will that not fix any bad sectors ahead of time? Also, you likely won't respond, but just in case - do you use their installed backup software, or do you just format and use it as extra space? Thanks. 2 is 1 and 1 is none... :)
@0LoneTechАй бұрын
It won't fix bad sectors. Formatting itself will get you somewhere from nothing to marking all blocks as in use, leading to reduced performance (trim helps with that, releasing blocks back to the write leveler). What you want is a full read/write test confirming that the entire capacity is simultaneously accessible with no overlaps.

Yep, it's amazing how every user takes as a granted the handling of the products by the service provider is flawless, which is absolutely not. It could perfectly be the case that that particular batch - or even model, why not? of portable SSD is more sensible or more prone to internal errors due to the way these companies manipulate these kind of products regularly, since they receive them into their stock till they handle it to the end client... Like, directly putting the blame on the product maker (?) and totally clearing off Amazon itself for any responsibility in the faulty product? What? Really... It's not a matter of discarding SanDisk from any blame, but to be abe to rightly see the whole picture... which in this case, it seems not... Hi all, it’s probably worth reminding everyone of the 3-2-1 Backup process as 1 is not a backup unless it’s a duplicate. The formula is 3 copies on 2 different media (as in two brands of drive) and 1 offsite. As I’m not a working photographer anymore I back up my entire drive and leave it offsite (a friends, a Banks SDBox) and a duplicate I keep securely away from my computer (my logic being thieves may steal the computer but unlikely to steal my socks) I do this tasks every month or before and after a vacation away.

My SSD is the 1TB version of SanDisk Extreme Pro V2. The first time, I experienced file loss which led to the disappearance of all my files. Even though I used EaseUS software, the recovered video files turned out to be damaged. Fortunately, I had file backups. So, I decided to format the SSD, changing the file format from ExFAT to APFS, as it's said to be better for Apple systems. With a mindset of giving it a try, I decided not to return the SSD and continued using it. However, after a week of formatting, the same issue occurred again - all files were lost! Within just two weeks, this SSD lost my files twice. I can no longer use a drive that is prone to randomly losing files; it's unbearable for me!
@tomhsia43548 ай бұрын
Not saying this drive isn't evil, it absolutely is and cannot be trusted. However, I need to point out I have had terrible experience with ExFAT and Fat32 on my Mac. Get any other drive and use APFS if you don't need cross-platform. ExFAT doesn't have jounaling so it is easier to corrupt in general. I use NTFS for my drives and have Paragon on my MAC. Back in the days, ExFAT would consistently have issues wtih corruption and disks not mounting with MacOS (apparently this came back in MacOS Ventura), I think the problem is MacOS/OS X not ejecting ExFAT disks properly. For Fat32, the file size limit is 4GB per file, in High Sierra Finder won't let you copy files larger than 2GB onto Fat32 drives. The 2GB file size limit is for Fat16, not Fat32, Apple somehow messed that up. You can use Terminal or some third party file manager to copy large files but that is a hassle.

SSDs are terrible for external storage that you don't plan to use very often. It's not commonly mentioned fact because people rarely verify integrity of their data and just not notice it but all SSDs are prone to data retention issues if drive is left unplugged for a long time (especially if you leave it exposed to sun and heat). It's case for all flash storage devices. It's non issue for internal drives since they're rarely unpowered for long period of time and those drives automatically refresh data if there's need for it IF they're powered on. But I did have my ssd severely corrupt data just lying on desk for 2 years unused. So if you plan to use ssd for rarely used external backup - just don't.
@pulisandeep5 ай бұрын
So what’s best for long term storage, ssd or hdd??
@Lapsio5 ай бұрын
@@pulisandeep hdd is better than ssd for long-term archiving where device may be unplugged for years. They're believed to be safe for at least 5 years unplugged. Preferably lower density HDDs since they're less prone to bitrot as domains are further away from each other (so avoid like 16TB 3.5" HDDs, they tend to have worse retention than eg. 4-8TB). if we're talking about practical archiving that's the way to go. If you look for more dedicated archival solutions then there are MDisc or LTO tapes. Most BR drives support M-Disc but they're only up to 100GB per disc. LTO tapes are unreasonably expensive for consumer to buy (tape drives are very expensive) but there are companies that will offer LTO data archival for you at cost a bit higher than tape cartridges themselves. I'm personally archiving on 2TB 3.5" HDDs.

Over the weekend, I decided to move my files from a 5TB Lacie to a 4TB SSD Sandisk to maximize speed. I successfully moved around 2.5 TB of Audio, Video, Design and Photo files over. However, after I deleted all of my files off of the Lacie now my Sandisk will no longer mount to my computer (MAC). Checking the format it is showing the Sandisk as MS-DOS, even after I had successfully moved over my files using a MAC. Now I have 2 empty hard drives and have potentially lost all of my files. Any help would be appreciated...

@lilafromyoutube Жыл бұрын
You can but I would always have a backup of a backup, to a cloud for example. so if hardware fails, you will still have your pictures in a cloud.
@JustRupes Жыл бұрын
@@lilafromyoutube Sorry for the long reply, but - Seconded, working in IT all too often I see people store their valuable memories or worse, business critical data, on a disk and then all of a sudden they try to access it and the disk is non-functional. There are some cost effective solutions from people such as BackBlaze for backup to the cloud. However a lot of people opt for Office365 which comes with 1Tb of OneDrive storage. So in the industry we always suggest a standard of three locations. 1 - The original working location such as your PC, server, NAS, External Hard Disk, this is the data you will use day to day. 2 - A dedicated backup drive (or NAS), ideally with many restore points so you can go back at least 30 days, this gives you time to realise that something has been deleted before your backup is overwritten. This also allows a rapid recovery time. Backup software is your friend here and will cope with maintaining the history by taking incremental backups automatically. 3 - Cloud based storage which is set to immutable (which means it can't be changed once it is uploaded). Cloud providers will often provide their own backup client software included in the price of the storage subscription (not the case with Office 365). Some of the great backup companies that provide good support are: EaseUS, Veeam, Backblaze, BackupVault to name a few. As with anything check out the reviews before you decide. Cloud based your data should be encrypted. If cost is a factor then you can reduce this by looking at your data and creating sub-directories such as Data I must protect at all costs, Data that I would like to backup but if it was lost I could survive, and data that is not important at all. You can then take steps to protect the folders differently, so the Critical data gets backup up to the cloud, and a backup disk, the not so critical data gets backed up just to a hard disk, and the non-critical data does not get backed up at all. I tend not to suggest this too often as it leads to things being too complicated in the long term, and people tend to mix up what they thing is non-critical. i.e. it's non-critical until it's not there and then it turns out to be super critical! I use this approach to my KZbin work, the RAW files are massive, often up to 1Tb for a single project. The SD cards get dumped on the working server, and that server only gets backed up to an external disk. If I lose the RAW data it's a pain, but not the end of the world and the cards are not deleted until the project is completed. Once a project is complete, just the final edit gets dumped onto another server which is has both Hard Disk Backup and Cloud backup. That way I am not needlessly transfer Tb's of data to a cloud provider just to delete it a week later (and pay for a ton of cloud storage!). My final point is you should try to understand how the backup works, this sounds daft but take for example Backblaze, that is designed to run continuously, if there is no backup for 30 days then the backup is gone as it only saves for 30 days history (there is an option to extend this but that is the default situation). I grabbed this from the web "Overall, if SSD is not getting power for several years, it may lose data. According to research, an SSD can retain your data for a minimum of 2-5 Years without any power supply. Some SSD manufacturers also claim that SSD can save data without a regular power supply for around 15 to 20 years." So I guess milage may vary depending on the exact SSD. The longest recovery I have ever done was from some reel to reel tapes that had sat dormant in a box since 1981 (this was 2015) so 34 years. I had to enlist a friend who worked for a famous computer museum in order to find a machine that could read the tapes. We recovered all the files expect for one tape. There were a total of 24 tapes we recovered all the information on 23 of them. We also had to bring the data through several machines to get to a point where It fitted onto a single small USB flash drive! But they had been stored in almost ideal conditions. Luckily I was just involved in the data recovery but apparently after that trying to convert the data files into something useable then took quite a while as the format of the files was so old.

Yup and it’s a lot faster. I paid $142 for 4tb and it’s faster and better. If I was willing to spend $210 I’d get about 4 times the speed. What enclosure do you use? Mine was a cheap $13-14 one on Amazon prime day. It’s a basic orico aluminum tooless (although I prefer screws more secure and how often are we really changing out ssd to matter lol). I like the sabrent aluminum one it was higher quality but performance was the same and it cost $36 on sale. I’d advise getting a 20gbp/s since it’s almost the same price unless you either want to go for a cheap like 512gb or 1tb one or it’s mostly like mine as a backup where you don’t really need super fast speeds all the time 10Gbp/s is plenty.

Louis Rossmann also did a Video last week about this issue in which he referenced an Reddit post and an email about a conversation with a SANDISK representative: according to the rep this issue is caused by more requests by the Mac(!) SSD controller than the SanDisk Controller can handle - which results in a higher probability in „accidentally flipped bits“ on high capacity drives (4TB), which lead to the failure of the SSD. SanDisk supposedly silently rolled out a firmware update, which should fix the issue - if the consumer installs it.
