In the video you keep saying “most people” won’t be able to take advantage of the full speed but what you should have said was “Mac users” won’t be able to. PC Motherboards with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 have been available since 2019! That’s TWO YEARS on the market and it can now be considered a default feature for anyone building even a mid-range PC. Furthermore, PCIE cards that support the spec are available for under $50 so you can add 20Gbps USB ports to the majority of desktop PCs made in the past in the past FIFTEEN years. That’s right my friends, you can upgrade a decade old PC to have USB ports faster than the current Macs for under $50. Anyway, just because you only have Apple hardware doesn’t mean that you should be making broad (and incorrect) generalizations like that. Either do your research and cover the benefits of using this drive with a Windows and Linux environment OR simply include in the title that your “review” is aimed solely at Apple users. Think of the thousands upon thousands of Windows users that might watch this video and then miss out on literally double the performance by taking your advice and opting for the slower version of this drive. This video did them such a huge disservice. You actually made their lives worse with your video by costing them time and money. Think how much more helpful it would have been to say something like, “Windows desktop users are in luck! Even if your motherboard was made before 2020 and doesn’t support the spec, a simple $50 upgrade can literally double your PC’s USB performance and allow you to take full advantage of this drive’s capabilities.” Yeesh, I had heard good things about your channel too. What a disappointment.

If you have a Mac I'd suggest looking at the Samsung X5 SSD Thunderbolt 3 1TB. I just purchased it and my read speed 2446mbs and write 1754mbs. Faster than this and works on older Mac without USB 3.2

Both of the models sound perfect for video editing on a laptop or iPad. If you are willing to stick stuff to your laptop, a lot of people Velcro them onto the back of the screen so that it is not dangling from the ports, which becomes less viable the bigger the drive!

@@darrenhaken No, if you already have V1, I wouldn't waste money upgrading, unless you transfer files a lot and want the extra speed. They're both plenty fast, and if you do want v2 for the extra speed, make sure the cable and computer port you're using can match or exceed the speed of v2, otherwise you'll bottle neck and waste all that extra money for nothing.

@@AutBelli For some reason, I'm thinking it has to be a Lightening USB cable to take advantage of 2000 MB/s R/W speeds, USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 should achieve this goal, although, I have seen the spec for a USB 4.0 and it sports a 40 Gbits/s speed, that is also associated with SuperSpeed + as-well-as Thunderbolt 3 and 4. But basically, you are limited by the host device, and if it doesn't support the USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 you might not be taking full advantage of this devices capabilities.

Perfect timing, I just started looking for a new hard drive to back up and start fresh with for the new year and this video brings up good points to check before buying. My iMac probably doesn’t support the latest and fastest speeds so and I don’t plan on upgrading it anytime soon so why pay for the speed of the hard drive if I can’t use it.

I got the 1050/1000 MB/s model on order. Didn't realise there was a size difference though. But I think it's the right choice; it's still under 50 grams and it will achieve max speed with any laptop. I did deliberate a bit between getting this and the Samsung T7. The T7 is a bit smaller, but I like the more rugged design of this one. And I think it's lighter too. Edit: I didn't realise there's a difference between the Extreme Pro v1 and the Extreme v2, despite them both being 1000-ish MB/s. I got the Extreme v2, which indeed is under 50 grams. The Pro is almost 80 grams. I wonder if there's a performance difference though.

I prefer T7 Touch with a fingerprint scanner. For me it is essential to protect my information on the drive from getting into the wrong hands. And in addition to the fact that the fingerprint is much easier than manually entering a password, the fingerprint also allows you not to install a proprietary application on other computers to access the information on the protected drive. And in this respect, the T7 Touch is still unique in its own way, so no brainer for me. In addition, SanDisk has no indicator of the status of the drive, and, from the video, it seems that its material is very attracted to dust. The eyelet looks cool, but let's be honest, not many people carry external drives on a carabiner, etc.

And the fingerprint is not a gimmick, but a very handy thing (if you can't read or understand what I wrote earlier, that's your problem). I've already experienced it myself. I experienced similar speeds with the 2TB pro v2 on my mid 2018 macbook pro. I was able to get the PRO SSD 2000MB/s v2 for a better price than the 1050MB/s version. The max speed I have seen was 975MB/s. I figure the new SSD with be future prof if needed. Currently my MacBook Pro hard drive runs at about 2800MB/s with 1.3TB on a 2TB SSD. A few things worth mentioning after listening to your conclusion, Gordon... a mild rant on ports, if you will. First, I think this drive is a prime example of why I dislike USB as a port standard. Nobody without the USB Promoter Group's decoder ring and their computer's manual will know what USB-C port they have, and few consumers upgrade their laptops or desktops frequently enough to make buying a "future-proof" USB 3.2 2x2 drive worthwhile. (The proposed USB 4 spec lists 3.2 2x2 support as "optional," so there's a good chance that this drive may never work at its rated speeds beyond the very narrow band of 3.2 2x2 devices currently available.) Secondly, Thunderbolt 3 is technically less messy, but the requisite integrated circuitry required on both ends makes it expensive to license and build (thanks, Intel), which is why it's rarely seen outside of Apple and really high-spec Windows PC offerings. Again, USB 4's proposed spec is built off of the Thunderbolt 3 spec, but there's no guarantee of support for devices with Thunderbolt 3 host controllers in the current proposal. Manufacturers of IC's and computers have to knowingly choose and build devices that do so, and, again, most consumers probably won't know the difference until they buy a drive like this and find that it doesn't operate as expected.

Thanks so much for this review. I actually have been doing the same thing as you with portable SSD's. Using two Samsung T5's attached to my desktop PC via USB C and one attached via a USB 3 adapter. The one on the adapter gives me about 384mbs read, and 407mbs write, random read only 256mbs. The USB C ones give me 528mbs read, 446mbs write, and 280mbs random read. It's quite good, though not as quick as my internal SSD's which do around 3033.5mbs read, 2105mbs write, and 882mbs random read. I am hoping to buy a new ipad pro in early 2021 and I am thinking the upgrade to a T7 or Sandisk will accompany it.

I have only one gripe with this SSD: no status light to tell the user when the SSD is being used! This is very handy when using it with say an iPad, as there is no option to eject the SSD from the iPad OS. Basically, there is no way to verify whether this SSD is in use or in idle mode.

Hi Ken, no you can't yet connect a USB drive to a camera for storage unless it's a compatible cinema camera. I wish they'd sort this, but the camera would need the intelligence to become a USB host, like a computer essentially. As for the iphone, I don't know, but it does work on the iPad, although obviously it needs o have USB C.

I’ve been considering an iPad plus external storage for photos and editing while traveling but haven’t seen a workflow that makes sense to me. Without having massive storage in the iPad, do you simply transfer files that fit to your iPad and then move them to external storage? I don’t want to carry a laptop as well. Great video as usual.

I might be putting my foot in my mouth, but if I am not mistaking the gist of your dilemma: I just watched a comparison video earlier between Sandisk V1 and Samsung T5 and T7. The uploader of the video specifically discussed his user scenario which I believe relates to you. He specifically said he uses external ssds because they are fast enough I/O to be able to edit his video files WITHOUT having to transfer them off of the external. So, in your case, you’d load up whatever massive project you are working on onto your external ssd and manipulate the files, directly on your external, with whatever app you are using on your iPad. Hope that made sense.

I don't know what ecosystem he was in [Windows, Apple, Android] I have very little experience with what Apple will allow you to do. I just bought an iPhone 12 and am already realising the headache of moving outside files onto it. I don't know if that is part of your problem or not with the iPad? I also don't do any legit photography, but it seems that it's not exactly possible to directly load files from the camera to the sdd. Hmm. In my case, using modern cellphones as my video capture, I'd just off-load the files from the phone directly to the ssd and then plug that into my tablet and do the editing. Wow. Yeah, I see your point about your workflow, if in fact you are trying to edit camera footage whilst travelling and are trying to avoid the whole computer-in-the-middle issue. Sorry, I suppose I wasn't any help after all. 🤷‍♂️

If the SSD on your desktop or laptop isn't an NVMe SSD, your upload/download speed will max out at around 150mb per sec (depending on the drive you are using). You'll only be as fast as the slowest SSD - its not just about the USB-C port you have. NVMe drives that support 2000mb/s read/right are very expensive.

@@cameralabs If the USB4 in the M1 Macs does not support 3.2x2 then that a new level of crazy for the USB standard and that’s a high bar! I have an M1 Mini but the drives are a bit pricey to take a chance with. The Sabrent XTRM-Q drives have TB3 & USB3.2 support which makes far more sense today.

Great Review. I have ordered a 4TB V1 and a 2TB V2 for use in musical and photo/video applications. Thank you for the Thoroughness of your review especially the transfer speeds. I have 2 macbook pros and it is good to know that they can only use the V2 at half speed which is same as V1 can save some money buying the V1.. do you think they run cooler using only half speed? one day they will be thunderbolt3 which will really be fast. @@cameralabs well I got the V1 4TB today and started transferring my instrument library. It’s a total of about 2.2TB then the auxiliary and drivers after that. But for some reason my MacBook Pro shut down about hour or so into it. Then it wouldn’t recognize the drive when I rebooted. Used disk utility program and finally got it to show up. And reformatted it to macOS instead of Exfat. Started transfering again this time did smaller chunks of files instead of all at once. And i noticed it got so hot I couldn’t really touch it so I think it overheated first time and shut down. So I only did about 40% of the files and will do rest tomorrow in smaller chunks. Once I get up and running with it I think it will be fine but 2.2Tb of data all at once is a lot. I also got a 2Tb v2(pro) coming tomorrow. Perhaps I will use that for the actual recordings I make. I benchmarked the one I got today at about 840 MB/s read and write which is faster than the GTech ones I have been using the GTech ones seem to be better built. They don’t have anything larger than a 2TB yet unless you spend $3,500 for a thunderbolt 3. I’m sure those will be affordable at some point.

Great review! The speed is deceptive. USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 came out in late 2019, after Thunderbolt 3. I've only seen Gen 2x2 support in desktop computers.

Sadly not. USB4 can but doesn't have to support 20Gbit/s USB, which is where the confusion will start! Thunderbolt 3 still supports 40Gbit/s, but is more expensive to implement.

@@cameralabs a bit interesting it seems I think Apple put some pressure on Intel to "open" Thunderbolt3 for it to be implemented as the USB4 open industry standard. I guess the electronics to do the USB4/TB3 are a bit different to what makes a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, just a bit confusing why a USB4 port wouldn't support what they call USB 3.2.. I have seen a youtuber show he can render faster to the 2000MB/s on an M1 than using the internal SSD, I want to see though what speed one can get with it..

@@charbax in terms of rendering, it should be faster to an external drive because the internal drive is also reading assets, performing calculations, running apps, OS etc, so if you can offload any of those to fast external drives, then yes, a render can take place more efficiently.

I just wish external drive makers would make drives that can be labeled easily (that is hand written or typed labels).

I looked on Amazon for it and found it but the reviews and a lot of people were saying that after a couple of months it died on them where they lost all their data on it that basically it crashed. And I was wondering if you had that problem before? Because I'm interested in buying it but since you've done a review on it I want to know what your thoughts are after you've had it for quite a few months of what it's done. I'd be more than welcome if you got back with me about it so that I will know if you had problems with it yourself but if not and you know what the quality and the issue is that people been having that you can fix it I'd be more appreciative. I always go to KZbin to look up reviews on products that I buy is because I want to know straightforward of the product from people that have used it before I have before buying it. And watching your video made me want to buy it so I bought it at Walmart. I only had the v2 for a couple of weeks on loan for testing before it was returned, but Ive had that 512GB v1 for a couple of years now with no issues.

In terms of speed alone, a Thunderbolt drive has the potential to be quicker than one that uses USB C on all current and previous Macs. BUT that's assuming the drive itself is able to deliver speeds faster than the USB port spec used by Apple. This SanDisk v2 drive for example is quicker than Apple's USB ports, so it could have gone faster had it used a Thunderbolt connection.

Hi Gordon. I know this is an old vid but I am considering this for use with the new Mac Studio. Am I correct that the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the device are backward compatible with USB 3.1 2x2 and therefore able to take full advantage of the speeds offered by this drive?

I haven't tested the Studio, but the ports look the same spec as my 14in MBP, in which case, sadly NO they do not support USB 2x2. None of the Macs do, and very few PCs do either. USB 4 is different. If you want the fastest speeds from an external drive on a Mac, new, or even a few years old, you need to get one which uses Thunderbolt 3 or 4. Gordon, as an owner of many external drives, I’m in possession of many cables of various configurations. Does the cable used have any effect on the speed? Could I just use the cable that best suits the length requirements. I also have a grab bag of cables and adapters for when I travel so may not use the supplied cable all the time.

I mention this in the review - ultimately while some shorter cables are better for speed, I would really recommend timing a large folder / file copy with each to see which is best as some brands and types of cables can perform quite differently.

@@calvinchann1996 there's no way of telling whether one cable will be better than another just by sight - I have loads of USB cables for instance, and if a device doesn't seem to be going as fast as I'd expect, I test the speed and try a different cable. The ones supplied with the SanDisk drives have been fine in my tests though and not a limiting factor.

Have you experienced any issues with MacOS Monterey - I have lots of problems with the Sandisk Extreme, but not with the Extreme Pro which makes me wonder if the drive controller firmware could be different. You can't update drive firmware with a Mac of course and both Apple and Sandisk seem to deny any known problems.

Hmmm, I generally only use Macs and haven't noticed any long term issues with my SanDisk drives.

I have basically the same disk, but made by WD, the WD_BLACK one with USB 3.2 gen 2x2. (WD owns Sandisk now.) Its pretty much only good for 1Gbps as pretty much nothing supports USB 3.2 gen2x2...... Even the newer USB 4 (Apple M1 Mac) standard seems to have ignored it, its the same as Thunderbolt 3 and can only support 1 Gbps with this type of SSD.... So unless you have a Windoew Laptop that has this port or high end Intel motherboards, nothing else seems to support it. Even the newest AMD X570 motherboards don't support this port (but you can get TB3 expansion cards.) TLDR: USB 3.2 gen 2x2 is pretty dead and has little support with no future aspects.

I skipped through the review but did Gordon mention what a battery hog the Extreme Pro is vs the Samsung T7? Thus is really important if you are using it with a phone or tablet.

I didn't notice that, but I've not tested the Samsung, so have nothing other than the older generations to compare it against. It certainly runs hot. What are you using to test this aspect of the drives?

Considering the V2 is now about the same price as Pro V1, the V2 is a no brainer. Just picked up a 2TB to store active video editing projects & edit off of it. BTW, do you know what the write life is on this drive? I couldn’t find this info anywhere.

Hi Gordon thanks for sharing your always extremely interesting reviews but one question is important for me in these case with the Sandisk SSD and in combination with Galaxy S20. How can you the Picture and Videofiles from the phone internal storage or the Micro SD-card export or copy from the phone to the SSD? Is it really possible because I get always the message formats as exFat or NTFS are not supported by the phone. I just tried it on my Galaxy S20 and it would work for short bursts of files - formatted as EXFat right now. It didn't copy ALL the files I asked it to, but it did a bunch at a time.

M1-chip MBP only supports USB 3.1 gen2 and USB 4......The fastest USB C drives are 3.2 gen 2x2 which All Apple products does not support!!!! So it throttles back speeds to USB3.1 to around max 500mb/s speeds...... You can get an increase of up to around 1000mb/s on and Extl SSD by getting the Sandisk Extreme PRO v2 (USB 3.2 2x2 gen version - must be the latest v2 PRO model - quotes 2000mb/s speeds on the specs) and then buying an Apple genuine branded thunderbolt 3 C-C cable 0.8m long £39 in the uk... must be this cable - It talks to m1 devices correctly and accepts the doubling of speeds (unless you'll only get around 500mb/s W/R speeds). Works on old 2012 iMac and latest M1 Macs - both I get fractionally under 1000mb/s - Hope this helps someone out there. The latest thunderbolt 3 Extl housings and an nvme 980 evo Samsung (build yourself) can get up to 2700mb/s R/W speeds - but this will cost double the outlay unfortunately (around £400 uk). Versus £180 Pro SSD + Apple cable option. Hoping to see a Thunderbolt 3 SSD on a Sandisk to get the 2700mb/s speed boosts, but not available yet! Maybe in late 2023?

It took me 100 years to figure out that 5gbps is not 5 gigabytes per second, but gigabits per second 🤪 i was so confused watching the reviews because I thought my usb 3.2 gen 1 port can support 5 gigabytes per second, when it is actually only 5gigabits which is equivalent to 625mbps only 😭😂 Hope this comment helps someone in the same situation 😂😂😂 BTW, I got samsung t7. I know it's still too fast, but maybe I will get a new laptop in the future. Also, i might use it on my ipad pro as well 😅

Doesnt Lumafusion copy the files in a project onto the iPads internal disk, which would explain how you saw no difference in working with the newer much faster drive compared to the old one in this scenario.

Couple of questions. If you macbook only has usb c (3.1) is there any point in buying the V2 or would I just be as well buying V1 and save some coin. I heard also that some hardrives will not play larger video files than 2GB. I I want a external for video files - sometimes as big as 8GB will they place of this device?

The max file size depends on the file system which you've used to format the drive. As for the ports, not there's no point paying extra for a USB 2x2 drive, although if those models are cheapest or discounted when you're buying, it could still be worth getting just on price. Sometimes newer models are cheaper than the last one or two.

As far as I understand, Extreme Portable v2 is the same speed as Extreme Pro v1, but maybe the Pro has better heat management for prolonged use
