I really like how the series highlights the behind the scenes aspects of the politics with all these deals and treaties. Helps to understand things better. Thanks for posting!!

I like how Fugger goes from money lender for the Emperor to.... "damn this kid is going to be big someday, I have to invest now!"

How expensive was the title of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire? After Maximilians death in 1519 his grandson Charles, the french king Francis I. and Englands king Henry VIII. contested for the title of the emperor. Seven electors (Saxony, Brandenburg, Palatinate, Bohemia and the archbishops of Cologne, Mainz and Trier) had the right to vote. And they all expected a huge amount of money for their vote. At the end the french king offered 300'000 guilders but the Fugger lended Charles the amount of 850'000 guilders which he gave to the seven electors. It was common to pay for votes during that time, to become a town major or to become the emperor. As loan securities the Habsburgs gave the Fuggers nearly all Austrian silver and copper mines, also a lot of spanish mines. The french king wanted to break the Habsburg encirclement of France, Maximilians oldest son Phillipp had married Joan, the daughter of the spanish king and Charles was their oldest son. Charles was the Duke of Burgundy, the Landgrave of Alsace, the Duke of Franche Comte (nowadays Burgundy in France), he ruled huge parts of Italy and he was King of Spain. Also he was the Archduke of Austria.

Oh it's too bad that the crown prince couldn't go on the Oprah Winfrey show and tell the whole world how tough it is to be a crown prince.

Maximilian was not a Crown Prince. That term was not used in the Holy Roman Empire.

How quickly you people all forgot about that huh? 🙄 Their bloodline doesn't make them special & it NEVER did. Imagine being a "lowly peasant", and defending their "right to rule". Mary wasn´t very happy about the whole thing.Maximilian showed that he meant business.It´s almost unbelievable that he proposed to pawn all Austria. .That was daring although the contract was for the future.

I know Maximilian was the next in line for the Austrian Empire, but did he have that right to make a deal like this? I wouldn’t think so, but maybe I’m wrong
@argonerus3 жыл бұрын
From legal perspective, it is possible according to legal theories such as future contract but it is risky because the contract in Maximilian’s case will work when the condition is fulfilled that is when he inherits power and ownership of his estates from his father. You can see that it is risky both for him and for the Fuggers. But for your concern, I can say one thing that there were no laws at the time which directly forbade the contract like Maximilian’s. Thus, it was legally possible, and His father(Emperor) hardly would speak against such deal because he was also in deep debts owed to the Fuggers. If he had defaulted his debts owed to the Fuggers or attempted to cancel the deal his son got, he would have faced severe or even catastrophic consequences throughout his empire ( Holy Roman Empire). Maximilian’s father’s personal domain, Archduchy of Austria, was part of Holy Roman Empire and enabled him to secure his election as the Emperor. But his power in the Empire was never near powerful because the local rulers who rule territories in the empire have a quite high privileged autonomy in their own lands. If Maximilian’s father could not hold and secure his own lands or keep promises on business or political contracts, he would have lost all de facto influence and power which he already had at the very inadequate point.

Roman Empire or German Empire. Austria was only a little piece of it.
Not the Austrian Empire that did not exist until 1804. This is the Holy Roman Empire of which Austria was just a constituent state. Many historians call this the First Reich and it existed from 800 to 1806 when Napoleon abolished it. The position of Emperor was also elective, so it was not absolutely certain Maximilian would be elected by the seven Electors. However the Habsburgs routinely bribed the Electors so they held the imperial dignity virtually unbroken from Frederick III right up to its abolition in 1806.
@admiralj69883 жыл бұрын
@@ds1868 the First Reich of the Germand existed since Otto the Great in 962. 800 was Charlemagne's Empire of the Franks, not the Germans. And Franz II dissolved it, not Napoleon.
