Why is the Lilium Jet a jet - in fact, the world’s first eVTOL jet? Julien Rasse, a Senior Test Engineer explains. He compares the streamlined architecture and ducted electric engines to classic aircraft and open-rotor eVTOLs. Julien also takes us into Europe’s biggest wind tunnel facility where the team is testing the aerodynamic interactions of the Lilium Jet.
The data gathered in these meticulous tests has helped refine the performance and efficiency of our design, maximizing safety and functionality.

0:11 "The world's first vertical takeoff and landing jet," Allow me to introduce you to the Harrier jump jet, courtesy of Hawker Siddeley who first produced it in partnership with British Aerospace, Douglas & Boeing / BAE from 1967 to 2003. It is a VTOL and VSTOL strike aircraft currently serving in the United States Marine Corps, Spanish & Italian Navy, though it's been retired from the British Royal Air Force & Royal Navy since March 2011. I'm aware this may not be an apples-to-apples comparison. The Harrier was fitted with a Rolls Royce Pegasus 6 engine, a turbofan engine with swivelling nozzles, whereas the Lilium has 36 ducted electric vectored thrust (DEVT) fans. But don't claim this is the world's first VTOL jet when you can so easily disprove/pick apart this statement (I'm aware this is most likely just marketing doing marketing). 1:38 "A helicopter or most open-rotor-based cabins are boxy, ours is built for the streamline." It's safe to say that this is just a marketing term. There are countless examples of aerodynamic rotary aircraft, such as my favourite the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin used by the British SAS and dozens of other countries' militaries. 1:47 "These jet engines are very similar to a traditional aircraft, just without the combustion. And unlike open rotors, those engines are scalable, safer and less noisy." I think we've agreed on the fact that these are not jet engines. Just call them what they are, DEV fans or thrusters. The only similarity they share with a turbofan is that they have a rotary component. Much lower RPMs and aerodynamic + mechanical stresses here. No fuel other than electricity is being used. I do agree however that DEV fans are scalable, safer and less noisy because of the far fewer components and previously stated points. In conclusion, after watching the entire video I have to firmly push back on calling this a jet. I agree with what others have stated here, the term jet is being used as a marketing term and holds no operational value. By this logic, you could call a Douglas DC-6 a 'jet' when it's a piston-powered cargo aircraft (surprisingly some still fly). Of course, the marketing department does have to do the polishing with what they have so that is understandable, but others need to understand that a DEV fan ≠ jet engine or jet aircraft. That being said, the US NBAA has an interesting article on what defines a jet aircraft (not the jet engine and this article is about a private jet): - One or more gas-turbine engines - Capable of flying higher and faster than piston or turboprops, catered to businesspeople - below airlines (20k-25k ft) or above (>40k ft) - Varied size & range, average 1k miles Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrier_jump_jet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_Pegasus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-6 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurocopter_AS365_Dauphin nbaa.org/business-aviation/business-aircraft/jet-aircraft/ Thanks for reading, fly safe.

The idea of using actual wings as a mode of forward flight in VTOL versus thrust only will greatly extend the range. I don’t understand the idea of using props alone for flight over both props and wings. With wings a power reduction can be realized as the craft is supported by the actual wings. Bag of ... The array of small diameter fans strung out along the wings is reminiscent of the Russian Caspian sea monster 'Ekranoplanes' and is also featured in several tech papers long preceding lilium . the figures given for range and speed were for flight at 10 000 ft which is the legal limit without oxygen and unrealistic for short ranges especially given the cost to climb and airbrake effect on descent . I'll look into the scale thing, thanks for the info.

First vertical take off and landing jet my arse. Harrier jets (e.g., AV-8B Harrier II, British Aerospace Harrier II) use directed jet thrust for VTOL capabilities. F-35B Lightning II... and your aircraft does not have jet engines anyway.

@michaeljohnson3383 a jet engine is an engine that strongly accelerates air to .. form a jet stream that gives the thrust force to overcome weight and drag. Your examples and the Lilium jet have this in common! Combustion is just one way of creating the jet stream.

I'll take an ugly craft if it's safe, fast and can achieve decent range. No design will scale up to decent size for regular commercial flights though, until batteries become a multifold of what they are today. When Tesla started with laptop battery cells, the energy density wasn't all that bad compared to today. Little progress. To achieve a modest 1000 km flight, you need to pack 3-4x as much energy in the same plane. But on such long flights, you don't want to lose 2-3 hours to a an actual jet, even if the craft could get there...slowly... To fly faster, a lot more energy per km is needed. For large planes, it's more difficult to achieve lift. They NEED to go fast to get off the ground, or go any meaningful distance. A 180-seat electric jet will easily take batteries 10x as good as today. And less flammable than they are today.

I'm a computational fluid dynamicist, I can answer that. Modeling a full body like this at high flow speeds is computationally very expensive if you're looking for little details like re-circulation zones or other phenomena that may affect flight. If you just want a steady-state calculation that can produce a ballpark estimate of lift and drag on the body then yes, you can do that. These guys are interested in the little details affecting flight dynamics. It is possible to simulate that but again, it's computationally expensive, and even still you always want to validate your CFD or at least compare with experiments whenever possible. Hope this helps.

But I haven't looked in depth into the accuracy of the result, nor do I understand how to interpret the results. May I ask your opinion on FEM, openfoam (or other CFD tools), SOTA/current microscale modeling, or is it worth pursuing?
