As an adult you realize that Mr. Bubbles was being really, really patient with Nani and Lilo. You can tell he didn't want to seperate the sisters and gave Nani time to clean up her act, but in the end he was looking out for Lilo's wellbeing first. May not be how all social workers are in real life, but definitely what we should want out of them. It's still crazy to me that a Disney movie centering largely around a sister trying to keep guardianship of her sibling ended up being so good, absolute classic.

I couldn't help but be aware of how differently I may have interpreted Mr. Bubbles if I was a child. As an adult, I got his perspective. I agree that this is an absolute classic. Disney hit a home run with this one!

I was 19 when Lilo & Stitch came out and even though at first I veiwed him as stern but not a bad guy. Later when he does show sympathy that he is reluctant to split Lilo and Nani but he had to do it for her own good, it showed that even if he is stern (but not overly stern like the stereotypical stern characters, like Aunt Sarah from Lady and the Tramp). Later when he sees the destroyed house and even shouts to Nani "Is this what she needs?!", I totally got that he did to take away Lilo for own wellbeing, not just to do his job, which shows he cares about her (though Nani does make a point that Lilo needed Nani as she understood her the best like no foster family could, which might have hurt Lilo mentally).

They got the sister dynamic perfect. Lilo and Nani are exactly what you would expect from two sisters who have a power dynamic forced on them. The humor is in the chaos, even though it is sad if you think to much into it.

This movie came out during such a hard time in my life. I was 21, I lost my 11 year old brother to the system because I wasn’t doing enough to take care of the both of us. So naturally I viewed Bubbles as the enemy because I was still so angry over my brother being taken from me then put into foster care. But when I heard him scream “is this what she needs?” it cut me deep. As much I wished to keep my brother with me, the truth was we were couch surfing different friends homes because I couldn’t make enough to afford a studio. Seeing this movie and how anyone can be your family made me open enough to accept that my brother’s foster parents could be his family too and not just me. We were so lucky that they were the sweetest and most understanding couple ever. They allowed me to spend time with my brother whenever we could. Even after he moved out at 18 we still kept in touch. They’re every bit our family the way me and my brother are now.

There's also so many great little details in this film: - "Pudge controls the weather" says the little girl whose parents died in a car crash during a storm. - There's loads of stuff in the background that details Nani's career as a professional surfer. A dream she gave up to take care of Lilo. Those two are my favourites.

The sister singing “Aloha O’e” becomes so sad when you learn the song was written by the last queen of Hawaii, who was imprisoned and forced to give up control of the islands under the threat that her citizens would begin to be executed. She was a Hawaiian woman who gave up what was most dear to her, in order to save the people she loved.

People have always underestimated animated movies. But time and again they've proved that just because a movie is geared towards a younger audience doesn't mean it has to be devoid of intelligent writing and an emotional story. I'm glad Jax and other adult youtubers are starting to learn this as they react to these fantastic animated classics. Not to mention not every is for children either, but even for the ones that are that is not an excuse for a movie to be bad.
@Pascal-the-Rascal
@Pascal-the-Rascal Жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of animated movies, whether they are from Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks, aren't really "kid's movies". They have a lot of humor and pop culture references that kids just don't understand, because they are too young to have been exposed to it. These movies are so much more than just kid's movies. Sure, kids might enjoy the colorful animations, funny characters, and the music, but there's more to these movies than just that. When one of my nieces was younger (she's 15 now) we watched Up, and she pointed at the TV and laughed in the scene where the house is getting dragged along the cliff. That's about all of the movie she watched, she wasn't very interested before or after that scene. I on the other hand, her uncle and a grown man who hasn't been a kid for a looong time, love the whole movie, and have watched it several times. Animated movies that really are kid's movies probably don't have the kind of budget, time, and talented people involved that movies from Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and even Illumination and Blue Sky have.

As a preschool teacher, I can say that the kids emotional dynamic in Lilo & Stitch is more accurate than any other Disney film! Another really good (underrated) one is Turning Red from last year, that captures the 'early teenage girl' age perfectly. I highly recommend it!

fun fact: the version you watched is edited, when Lilo is hiding and climbs out of the cabinet (?) originally it was the dryer (you can see the switch back at the end when stitch does laundry) but apparently that was problematic so they changed it to discourage kids from getting the idea of hiding in appliances also stitch's density just mean he can't float (you see this with body builders who have a lot of muscle mass), he could technically learn to swim but it would be difficulty because he has no buoyancy
@billbill6094
@billbill6094 Жыл бұрын
Not so fun fact: When the final chase sequence was originally animated, it took place in an airplane instead of an alien ship as they skirted around buildings instead of mountains. Given that it was still being animated in 2001, there's a very obvious reason they changed it. The original animation can be found on youtube.
@nullunit
@nullunit Жыл бұрын
I know they also had to make changes to the finale die to Sept. 11th the ships crash in the ocean rather than into a city. Too close to home in 2001. They other edit was that they toned down the howlie hatred; but IO am glad they kept in Lilo's fixation of photographing fat tourists getting lobsterized by the sun. She is like an anthropologist. I came to the comments to see if anyone pointed out that this was the edited version already. However, it wasn't the dryer. It was the oven. He pulls the cake out of it at the end. They replaced it with an open pizza box on a low shelf.

In the extended version we discover that the only day that Lilo forgot to feed Pudge, the fish that controls the weather, was the same day that her parents died due to bad weather. Since then Lilo blames herself and does not let a day go by without feeding the fish, even when it causes problems, because she does not want anyone to suffer what she suffers. Accurate or not, I’ll take the credit for pointing you to this one. Thanks, was a delight watching you experience this. Some subtler points: * Something I never expected to see in a Disney movie, someone vomiting on film (the robot in the opening when 626 curses) * Pudge controls the weather (her parents died during a rainstorm) Pretty sure I mentioned this one in the same list where I suggested Lilo & Stitch, but definitely check out Iron Giant. It was another film that didn’t receive the appreciation it deserved at the time, also gets emotional. Also a follow-up to an earlier discussion: I told you that Into the Spider-Verse doesn’t fall into the MCU timeline, but the sequel proved me wrong. Across the Spider-Verse, which takes place a year later, does briefly reference the events in No Way Home, but not in any meaningful way. I’d still treat it as irrelevant to the MCU, mainly because I don’t want to have to wait that long to see you experience the magic of the Spider-Verse films.

The fact that Lilo feels the need to feed Pudge because of her parents is heartbreaking. I didn't realize that's where that superstition came from. I definitely want to watch Iron Giant. I haven't seen it but it has been recommended a couple of times now, so it must be great! Also, thanks so much for letting me know about the Spider-Verse / MCU timeline. I was planning on watching the Spider-Verse movies after I finished Phase 3 of the MCU, so I'll keep that in mind. Thank you again! I hope you have a lovely weekend!! ❤️❤️❤️🐑

I said this before on your post announcing that you were going to be covering this one, but this is my joint favourite disney film alongside Zootopia. Stitch is just endlessly lovable, and I find its alien civilisation also quite interesting! I never really caught it as a kid but this movie is also amazing neurodivergent representation! Edit: Also, you might notice that Lilo says her parents died when they went for a drive in a rainstorm. And she also says that she regularly takes a sandwich to a fish she believes controls the weather so that there aren't any more rainstorms. That's so sweet and so sad all at once.

There’s a Lilo & Stitch series where Jubba loses this orb with ALL of his experiments, Each with their own number like Stitch (experiment 626) but they’re all inactivated so they’re like little small orbs that when dropped in any liquid, activate. He loses them and each episode is basically random strangers accidentally finding an orb and dropping it in liquid😂 Stitch then refers to these experiments as his “cousins” since they’re basically his genetic family :)

Now before September 11, 2001 the artist had a scene where Stitch hijacked a airline and flew between skyscrapers. When September 11th happened the artist had to change the sequence for a alien ship and flying through mountains vs skyscrapers. But on KZbin you can find the original finished artwork sequences with the airliner and skyscrapers.

4:33 That is true but ironically, only a very small percentage OF mosquitoes do so. There are thousands of types of mosquito and only about 100 types have ANY interest in human blood. Most species of mosquito are specialized and only consume blood from one type of animal. There are, for example, a brave type that only drinks blood from frogs. Theres another type that we should be really glad they *don't* bite humans...they bite crocodiles. Their mouth parts must have armor piercing +10 or something.

I love this movie. It's heartbreaking, but also perfectly captures the feeling of having a weird family that doesn't fit in, and struggles to get by, and there isn't really a "bad guy" in the traditional sense; everybody in this film did what they thought would be best, it's just the tragedy that what was best could tear a family apart, because of bureaucracy. Lilo and Stitch is such a popular film because it speaks to the little and broken, but still good families in a way that makes us feel seen, understood and loved. Sometimes a family is two sisters, a boyfriend, a speaking dog-alien, a one-eyed mosquito expert and an evil scientist. It's not always gonna be the white picket fence ideal, and it's gonna be good and full of love.

I was crying with you Jax. Love this unique movie, but Yes its suprisingly emotionally moving. With moments of comedy relief. There are many moments that make me cry. Lilo is so lonely sad and angry at first. Much like Stitch. They feel unwanted, and they eventually help each other heal emotionally. Lilo and stitch both want to feel loved and be part of a family. I love it when Stitch says "this is my family. It's broken, but good" Heartwarming. If they make a live action version I hope Disney stays true to story and don't ruin it somehow.

Lilo & Stitch makes everybody cry... every time. It edges out "The Incredibles" as my all-time favorite animated feature. Both speak to me in a very particular way, both the characters and the lovely art direction, music, and early 1960s Hawaiian and modernist stylings. 9:27 "My friends need to be punished" -- I'm still trying to determine which children's book I read that this scene must have been inspired by. A girl's terrible little brother gets his hands on a "Practical Voodoo" book like the one Lilo had (or maybe it was a mail-order course) and things do not go well. It might have been one of Beverly Cleary's books, probably from the 50s or 60s. If anyone knows, it's a memory itch I've wanted to scratch for a long while...

Stitch is known as Experiment 626. June 26th celebrates Stitch more than you can imagine!! I expect you will likely join the fun next year. I know why I kinda avoid watching this movie but later today I will give in and stock up with some reliable tissues, lol, and watch it once again. Lamby may not have done this intentionally but his joke about the alien with three eyes kinda resembles the alien from Toy Story with it's three eyes. Take care of yourself, Jax! Bye, Lamby!

Lilo is apparently something of an icon in the neurodivergent community (she's probably autistic). I didn't give it a second thought until it was pointed out how oddly she behaves for a 6 year old. I'm very ADD and the people I hang out with are also odd in their own wonderful ways her behavior never struck me as unusual. Makes me feel lucky to have my found family.

One _slightly_ sad fact about this film is that the reason Lilo feeds Pudge the fish a sandwich at the beginning is because "Pudge controls the weather". Lilo wants to control the weather because her parents died in a rainstorm and she's trying to prevent losing anyone else

FAVOURITE MOVIE EVER!!!! Couple fun(?) facts; 1. Lilo means "generous one" or "Lost". So Lilo and Stitch means Lost and Put Back Together. 2. Pudge, the fish who controls the weather. Lilo fed him everyday but the 1 day she didn't her parents died due to rain. So now she keeps feeding him to prevent it from happening again. 3. The creators went to Hawaii to learn about the culture so they could get it right. Even the dances, they learnt them from real hula dancers. 4. The scene where they fly through the hills after Gantu was originally meant to be through a city but 9/11 happened so they had to change it. 5. When Lilo hides behind the pizza box after Bubbles leaves and Nani chases her, that WAS a dryer... but a child hiding in a dryer sends the wrong message. Especially a 6/7yr old. And 6. They used watercolour to paint the backgrounds which hadn't really been done since the 1940's. I love this movie.

at its core, this movie is about the ups and downs of family you're born into and family that you find on your own. as it was, just Nanin & Lilo, they were tiny, struggling, broken, but had immense love. Now, its Nani, Jacob, Lilo, Stitch, Bleakley, Jamba, and Mr. Cobra Bubbles as one giant interspecies family of found souls just looking to belong. and the end up choosing to belong to each other.
