The government on Krypton did not believe the planet was going to die. That’s why Jor-el was speaking to them at the beginning of the movie, to convince them to plan contingencies around its destruction. They short-sightedly “punished” Zod and his crew by giving them a chance to live 🙄. It’s the clearest example of Krypton’s failures as a society and why Jor and Lara knew Kal needed to grow up on his own and be a bridge between two cultures.

Johnathan died from a heart attack in the comic. He didn't let Clark go to save the dog because he didn't want Clark to expose his abilities yet. Johnathan felt the world was not ready for him yet. He was afraid once people and the government found out about him they would never let him have a normal life. Someone would figure out how to get to him eventually. Look at how easy it was for Lois. All it took was a pretty face and an alien robot almost killing her to sus out his secret.

I like the comic book and original movie better regarding Jonathan's death. It wasn't about him having to stay hidden from the world, it was about him realizing that, with all his strength and abilities, some things are just unavoidable. A lesson that he can't save everybody, no matter how much he wants to.

Jonathan dying of a heart attack is canon in the Superman ouvre, and it was changed, obviously, because of the callous remark after the bus rescue that maybe Clark should have left the bus to sink. In the Smallville TV series, Jonathan's heart condition was, in a way, caused by Clark acting out after exposure to a substance that eliminated his inhibitions, and Jonathan going to extreme physical measures that his body couldn't handle. Snyder's miscalculation here was that there's no way that Clark would have let him die, and no way that Martha wouldn't have countermanded her husband's order. As far as Krypton, and how the council seemed so short sighted with regards to Zod, they had rejected Jor-El's findings concerning the imminent destruction of the planet, and stands as a metaphor about how we react to warnings about climate change and other ecological issues that we are putting off dealing with. Superman has always been my number one super hero. Reading comics as a child in the 50's, he was the one who captured my imagination.

People act like it’s easy to make quick decisions, in that case all movies would have plot armor so nobody dies cuz they quickly figured out to exit a back door if a burning building. Jonathon Clark dying if a heart attack is a meaningless death. Uncle Ben getting killed by a criminal points Peter Parker to the direction he was meant for. Jonathan Clark dying in a horrific tornado disaster while waving his son off to not save him teaches Clark a more meaningful example because his father did not want him exposing himself to this government who would immediately fear him and lock him up and experiment in him and try to figure out how to weopnize him. It’s not the 50s or 60s anymore this Superman is present now and the world has changed for the worse which Jonathon knew and we get to see how Superman is treated in this mobile and more specifically in Batman v Superman. Clark will always remember the sacrifice his earth father made to keep him safe, dropping dead on the farm from a heart attack doesnt teach any lesson because there was no sacrifice or lesson from that.

@@tonysoto8949 Papa Kent getting killed by a heart attack is not meaningless, it's essential to Superman's sense of empathy and respect for life. Acknowledgement that no matter how incredible or all powerful he is, sometimes life throws the worst at you, all his strength means nothing if his father has a heart attack. Nothing he can do, no way to save him, no situation to punch his way out of. I'm not even a fan of Superman and you can see how it peaks through, particularly in cases where Superman talks people down from suicide. It's not "meaningless" by any stretch, not everything related to superheroes has to be tragic for the sake of "gritty" storytelling, that's Snyder brain rot. Also, "it's not easy to make quick decisions", my brother in christ, Clark already made the decision to save the dog, and was called off. Then he made the decision to save his father, then was called off. And he died because they both don't believe they had the ability to _lie,_ to give a more believable explanation to his living through a tornado, which is not impossible, than "my son is an all powerful alien powered by the sun."

I love the scene where Clark tries to fly, but can just jump, this is a nod to the original comic, Superman couldn't fly, but he was able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! this eventually evolved into the ability to fly. The S is actually a river, a symbol of hope.

Fun Fact- in the opening scene of Krypton...Jor, Lara, Zod and others were supposed to speak Kryptonian language developed by linguist Dr Christine Shreyer. But the idea was later scrapped only to use the Kryptonian writings in the background of scenes like Council pillars, Jor El's citadel walls & in their Liquid Geo display systems. She developed both writing & numerical systems. Its just one of many other interesting world building concepts including their technology of ships, armor & weapons. In the Snyder's Krypton the citizens had its unique set of family symbols that carry a specific meaning that signify their role in their societal structure. Jor El will have the El symbol while his wife Lara Lor Van will have the house of Van symbol (which we do not see in movie but can be searched about a chart of symbols designed by Christine). General Zod's real name is Dru Zod, his sub commander Faora Hu Ul, the medical officer Jax Ur (one who found out the codex in Kal El), other female soldier Cara Vex (one who pushed Lois in the ship's chamber). The Scout ship had its own backstory as a prequel comic book developed along the movie. It belonged to Kara Zor El aka Supergirl. The comic showed the circumstances that led the ship to crash land to Antarctica. She never appeared in Snyderverse movies unfortunately.

Yes, Kryptonians get their powers from the atmosphere of Earth and a yellow sun. Krypton had a red sun, so they were powerless. It’s why Zod struggled to use his in the first half of the final battle, it’s a lot to take in

Now, here's the scary part. Faora, Zod and Nam Ek were wrecking shop WITHOUT yellow sun-fueled powers, showing that Kryptonians without the yellow sunlight are still roughly MCU Hulk level. Once Zod started absorbing yellow sunlight, that's when he started giving Clark problems.

Isn't Krypton a super sized Earth wutha lower mass star. So although they have a less powerful star and a dying atmosphere planet, they still have adapted themselves to a higher gravity life. Thats why Jor El said Earth's gravity is weak but atmosphere more nourishing! For comparison we humans are evolved on earth so we on Mars would be having powerful muscles enough to jump up height of 4-5 feet in air!

Well, the term "powerless" sounds exagerating to the context here, cuz Kryptonians in this movie were more or less normal humans but with centuries-old-of-travelling-the -stars-and-being-nomads advanced societies adapting to countless environments and atmospheres imprinted in their DNA that technically in our terms, them being able to live physically normal in harsher environments is already Godly. It's not like they were ever able to manifest Superpowers before, it's just years of keep adapting to harsher environments until they settled in Krypton and then coming to earth felt like a bed made of cotton to them. It's like game levels, Kryptonians are like endgame players who choose New Game without the saved data

Sure, someone is going to have to explain the biology of that to me. Still dont know how being super-powered gives you the ability to defy gravity, or shoot laser beams from your eyes, etc. Do humans have superpowers on planets around red suns? If it takes an atmosphere, why does superman have power when he's in orbit? Wouldnt kryptonians have learned about their potential by now, having explored the galaxy and been to other yellow suns, or is this utterly unique to Earth? If it is unique to Earth, surely superman cant have ever been superpowered on other worlds before in the comic books?!

Lois Lane is more than a journalist in the comics. You noticed the way the military guy’s reaction to her showing up early. The reason and the reason she able to fire weapons and remain calm under stress is that she’s the daughter of general. She has a sister in the comics and they were both raised the way a soldier would raise a son. I know that sounds bad but the comics were created in the 20s. So it was really advanced for the time it was created

The interesting thing about Clark Kent/Superman is that in the comic books and animated movies/series is how conscious he always is about his actions, and is constantly restraining himself when physically interacting with others and objects because he could destroy them so easily. He refers to Earth as a cardboard world in one of his iterations. Like when young Clark got pushed over by the bully, he purposely fell over just to seem normal.

The new "My Adventures with Superman" anime-style series has a really nice take on this -- it shows a younger Clark who still has problems controlling his strength (he often accidentally tears off door handles when he opens a door). Since he knows how potentially destructive he can be, he's taught himself how to repair a lot of the damage he causes, and in one beautiful scene, he goes out of his way to repair the destruction left in one of his super-battles. Other scenes show that a lot of stores really like Clark because he often volunteers to fix broken parts of their building. Few superheroes take the time to clean up after themselves, but by using his strength and speed to rebuild instead of destroy, this Superman shows what he's all about.

I hate that speech about cardboard. Sure, it sounds impressive, but cardboard is actually stronger than people think. A better comparison would have been something actually fragile, like glass or, given just how strong Supes is, a world made of 5,000 year-old papyrus, where the wrong touch can cause it to fall to pieces. Clark has mentioned that an involuntary twitch of his finger can shatter steel. Even when he was only at roughly 25% of his power back when he was much weaker in the early 90s, his fingernails could shave steel. He's also mentioned that if he flexes too hard he can cause earthquakes.

Each family on Krypton is part of a house, Superman is Kal-El, his parents are Jor-El and Lara from the House of El, and all houses have an individual symbol, or crest. As of 2019, the symbol of the House of El means hope, it looking like an S on Earth is a coincidence. In its first incarnation, back in 1938, it was a letter S on a yellow police badge, resembling a shield. It was illustrated like that on the front page, but not inside the comics - where it was written in a triangle. The diamond shape we are used to didn't catch on until the cartoons in the beginning 40’s. Its classic (timeless) look dates back to 1944, Action Comics #66.

@@bigdream_dreambig Smallville talked around what it meant if I’m not mistaken, and the 1978 didn’t mention it at all, Lois just named him Superman. Edit: “Smallville" is all about exploring the hero's back-story so it was natural they'd provide an explanation for the "S" - in fact, they've provided two explanations. In the first season episode, "Rogue", Lex Luthor explains to Clark that Alexander the Great wore a breast-plate in battle that had a jeweled "S" type logo. According to Luthor, "the design symbolizes strength and courage." Clark responds ironically: "I can't exactly see myself going into battle with that on my chest." (In December 1978, "Superman: The Movie" provided a new explanation for the "S" emblem. It wasn't an "S" at all, but a Kryptonian symbol that served as a family crest for the -El family. Apparently, the "S" stood for "El" and it was Lois who connected the symbol on his chest with the letter "S" and the name Superman.) In "More Fun Comics #101," the narrative explained that Clark "secretly fashion[ed] a colorful red-and-blue costume - and thus [was] born - Superboy." Though the "S" emblem isn't mentioned explicitly, it can be assumed that its design was part of the "secret fashion[ing]" that Clark did in making that first Superboy costume. Superboy muddies the waters a bit when he declares that he "chose" the "S" emblem - not designed or drew but chose - "to stand for Superboy, and later Superman - [but] it will also mean Saving lives, Stopping crime, and giving Super-aid wherever it's needed." It can be assumed that Superboy's use of the word "chose" can be attributed to an error in word choice, rather than an attempt to claim someone else designed the "S". In 2002, "Superman: Birthright" incorporates the movie explanation for the "S" emblem as Jor-El is wearing it on Krypton. However, as on "Smallville", the "S" appears to be more than just a family crest. According to Clark: "At first, I thought it (the emblem) was a family crest of some sort - but if it was, it certainly came to mean more than that to these people. Wars were fought over it. Entire cities were built on it. Over the course of time, it became a... a promise. A sign of people fighting to make a better world. A symbol of hope."

You're not alone in that opinion, but my take is that he knew putting his wife and that little girl into Clark's care was the best way to ensure their safety. In addition, no matter what strength Clark may have had, Johnathan Kent still had a father's instinct to protect his son.

Yeah. No. You don't run back into a tornado for a FRICKIN" DOG when you have a responsibility to your wife and child. Snyder or some writer went off the deep end on "animal rights" or just lost the moral train of thought and wouldn't just do the absolutely beautiful (but not "Cinematic" enough) scene from the 1978 Superman movie where Jonathan just has a heart attack in front of Clark and dies. "All those things I can do. All those powers. And I couldn't even save him." PERFECT. The moment when Clark is faced with the fact that he is NOT a God. Just a man with incredible abilities for good or ill and no matter what he does, he can't save everyone.

@@kenle2 The dog isn't the issue. I think most people would try and save their dog too. In fact, most people would never have forgotten the dog in the car. If they had all stayed under the bridge and the his dad forced him to let the dog die, that would've been even more ruff on viewers. But I agree with the rest of what you said. The scene just sucks. Poorly written and done much better decades before. Snyder is a good cinematographer and his Batman is cool but between this and MARTHA, I don't know what's up with him.

​ @kenle2 It all depends on what lesson you want focus on. In the 1978 film, "the universe" teaches Clark that he can't save everyone. In _this_ film, his _father_ teaches him that we will end up in situations where it's worth sacrificing of ourselves in order to protect those we love. In my opinion, the 2013 lesson is the more personal and emotional one, and so was a good choice for the film.

The action sequences alone make this an outstanding movie, but the characters and story are really well written too, not to mention I love the serious tone throughout. I like that you understood Zod’s backstory. He really had no choice, as extreme as some of actions were, he had to follow what he was genetically programmed to do. His story is a tragic one when you think about it, and I’d argue that from a kryptonian point of view, Zod could be seen as the “hero”. He is easily one of my my favorite antagonists or “villains” ever.

The front door of the school bus only opened when the bus got partially out of the water, as the water in the bus pushed it open. Under water the equalized pressure kept the door locked in place. Clark opened the back door and was only able to do so, because he has the strength of all humans combined in his pinky finger tip. The plan of Jor El was to have Kryptons legacy in Superman guide humanity to a better future to succeed where Krypton failed as a society.

All Superman comic book origins relating to the Kents: *Golden Age Origin* - *1938 to 1955* It depends on the Comic Book (DC has had a few universe reboots over the years) but originally the Golden Age Superman's adoptive parents died before an Adult Clark became Superman. At the time they were unnamed. Golden Age Superman along with all the Golden Age characters of the 1940s like Batman, Woman Wonder, etc. These were all retconned to be set on Earth-2 as in 1956 DC introduced Barry Allen as the Flash. But there was already a Flash called Jay Garrick so DC decided to say that Barry Allen is from an alternate Earth called Earth-1 and the original characters were moved to Earth-2, even though they came first. Overtime Earth-1 would become the mainline DC universe. *Silver Age Superman* - *1956 to 1970* Then we have the Earth-1 Silver Age Superman which introduced us to Jonathan and Martha finally given them names. Clark becomes Superboy and after graduating from high school, his mother and father take a tropical vacation but they contract a rare island disease that ends up killing them. Superboy then travels off to Metropolis and overtime becomes Superman. *Post-Crisis Superman* - *1985 to 2011* Now we get to the most well known death in Post Crisis DC. Short history in the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline from 1985 the whole multiverse was being destroyed by the Anti Monitor. The Monitor then recruits heroes from across the Multiverse including Earth-2's Superman and Earth-1's Prime Superman the two Superman listed above. The Anti Monitor is then defeated by Earth-2's Superman and in the end a restarting happens giving birth to New Earth, made up of primarily history of Earth-One, with additional aspects of Earth-Two, Earth-Four, Earth-S and Earth-X folded in creating a new reality and the mainstream reality of the DC Multiverse between 1986 and 2011 known as Prime Earth or Earth Prime, no characters have any memory of there last universe. In this new Post-Crisis reality showcased in 1986's The Man of Steel the Clarks are much younger than they find Clark as a baby. They would also live long into his adulthood remaining as supportive figures right into when Clark becomes Superman. Jonathan would have a heart attack after Clarks death in Death of Superman but would recover from this and later die from another heart attack in the storyline Brainiac. *New 52 Superman* - *2011 to 2016* The New 52 Superman. The New 52 came around in 2011 after the Flashpoint storyline that brought together Prime Earth, Vertigo (Earth-13), and WildStorm (Earth-50) along with de-aging characters and there active history by 10 years making them younger. create a new reboot. Superman was much more Edgy and rebelllous but this makes sense as this Clarks parents were killed in a car crash when a drunk driver hit Jonathans truck when Clark was still young. This Superman grew up free from their influence and as such was a much more rebellious crimefighter. This was pretty controversial choice and the overall New 52 is often seen as a more darker, more tragic take on these DC characters similar to the DCEU. Rebirth Superman *2016 to 2016* New 52 Superman was killed, with pre-Flashpoint Superman (Post Crisis Superman) became the DC Universe's primary Superman once again in 2016. This also brought back 2009's Secret Origin series as the primary origin of Superman where he begins as Superboy allowing Clark to save his parents from their fatal collision unlike New 52 Superman. This allowed the Kents to remain alive well into Clark's adulthood. Why are there so many origins? Well for the case of these three two universe there's actually someone behind the scenes extremally powerful changing events in time leading to the creation of new universes. But it's really just the writers trying to find ways of fixing there timelines in creative ways and undoing any changes fans did not like. This all comes from the Doomsday Cloak storyline from 2017 to 2019 and it really cool to see how Superman's origin has changed over the years and explaining every alter to his origin. And of course DC wanting to reboot etc. This comes with changes and modernizing parts of the story, characters etc. And this is only the comics we have Superman animated shows as well like the Superman Animated Series from the 1990s that has the Kents alive to the TV show Smallville that follows a young teenage and later young Adult Clark before he becomes Superman featuring the Kents who's origin are closer to the 1978 Superman film.

26:30 That's difficult to answer as there's been many reboots over the years, give writers a fresh start to update, modernize and expand characters origins and stories etc. In the Post Crisis timeline from 1985 to 2011 (By far the most beloved DC timeline) Jonathan actually died of a heart attack deep into Clark's journey as Superman. This Clark had the support of both his parents from a young teenager as Superboy (Teenage Clark Kent in Smallville saving the day, sometimes going beyond Smallville) to Superman making him very lovable and kind just like the Kents, at least the comics version of them. In 2011 DC did a universe reboot creating the New 52. Here both Martha and Jonathan Kent died in a car crash when Clark was in High School. The New 52 Superman grew up without the Kents so Superman was much edgier and just bitter for what happened to his parents but overtime became more hopeful. The Superman of Man of Steel has Kents who want to hide him from the world rather than openly help so we get a pretty different Superman, one closer to what we see in the New 52. It all really comes down to the Kents on how Superman will act in the future. But there are examples of universes where Jonathan never dies like the amazing Superman Animated Series where his parents are alive and well when Clark is an Adult, even carry over into the Justice League show as well. The shows Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited was this really cool animated DC shared universe similar to the MCU but animated and made up of shows. One of the best Batman films of all time *Mask of the Phantasm* is set in this universe and is stand alone story with origin elements so I would heavily recommend Mask of the Phantasm if you want to a really great rendition of Batman, the definitive Batman for alot of people. For Superman I highly recommend the opening three episodes of the Superman Animated Series called *The Last Son of Krypton* basically a short film cut up into three episodes. And then in Season 2 of Superman Animated Series I recommend the three episode storyline of World's Finest the first time Batman and Superman meet. DCAU recommended | Batman & Superman *Great Batman Film* Batman: Mask of the Phantasm *Superman Origin:* The Last Son of Krypton - Part 1 The Last Son of Krypton - Part 2 The Last Son of Krypton - Part 3 *Batman Meets Superman:* World's Finest Part 1 World's Finest Part 2 World's Finest Part 3 I highly recommend these if you want a good depiction of Batman and Superman without needing to watch all of the shows and episodes.

They didn’t have these abilities on krypton because krypton’s gravity is stronger and it has a red star which nullifies their powers making them normal. In early renditions of Superman, the most famous version of the Superman costume, his mother (Martha Kent) made it out of the blankets he was wrapped in when his Kryptonian parents put him in the spaceship. In those versions (at least at first) the blankets were as indestructible as he was. Even as a little kid, it made no sense to me that (a) an Earth-woman could cut and sew "indestructible" cloth in the first place and (b) that baby blankets consisted of enough cloth to make a complete uniform for a full-grown man to include boots and a full-length cape.

These versions were about explaining how much the Kent were important in his psyche. He gets his values from jonathan and unconditional support from Martha Kent. There are vesions in wich Kryptoninans aren't this reliable, or in wich Clark aren"t this lucky and is raised by less good people. Clark is usually more the Kent's son than the son of Jor El. My biggest concern about Man of Steel is Jonathan giving me a bad vibe. He blames Clark from helping people tries to make him less concerned about problems of those around him. Even his death is ridiculous. Dying stupidly because you don't want your son to do the job when he could perfectly do it without risk and problably stealthily considering people can't look easily during a hurricane. I don't see Superman coming from this Stepfather...

39:03 I actually loved Antje Traue (Faora-Al) even more than I enjoyed Michael Shannon as Zod (and I REALLY enjoyed his version of the character). There's another movie I saw her in from 2009 called Pandorum. It's a really crazy and dark sci-fi horror movie, and might not be a GREAT movie, but she's a TOTAL badass in it. Between that movie and this one, I'll watch anything she's in, lol. I loved Cavill as Superman, he's actually my favorite iteration so far, even if the writing of the later movies wasn't great and then they decided not to keep him around for the upcoming reboot of the universe. I'm bummed he won't be back for the new movies, but apparently the new guy is going to be David Corenswet, and he actually looks a little like a younger Cavill, so I'm willing to give him a shot. Side note: I love that hair band, it's really cute!

You can instantly fix the tornado scene by swapping in teen-Clark for Henry Cavill in the scene. The outburst "you're not my dad" is kid-level dialogue rather than man-talk. It would also make more sense emotionally and practically for Jonathan to protect child-Clark from the judgemental world that he isn't ready to face yet than adult-Cavill.

I'm glad you decided to take this journey. The DC films (some of them, anyway) are my favorite superhero movies of all time. A bit of advice, that you'll probably get from other DCEU fans, you need to watch the Director's Cuts of each movie. For "Batman v Superman", that means the Ultimate Edition, and for "Justice League", that means "Zack Snyder's Justice League". They're pretty long, but it's incredibly worth it to watch those versions over the ones released in theaters.

And secondly, obviously he stopped Clark from showing his abilities because he knew the world is not ready and would not accept him as a savior. Love that scene! Love your reaction! I respectfully disagree. The difference in Clark vs Bruce is that he had parents that instilled good morals and values. He is the 'boy scout' of the DC universe. His father would NEVER have told him to not save school children in a bus. I loved the movie, loved the casting, hated what they did to father.

The dad dying scene: They saw the tornado and got out of the car, looking at it and terrified. So they forgot about the dog and ran for their lives. But his mom remembered the dog, and his dad went, as any other dad in the world wouldn't want their children in danger while the dad was still capable, and he also didn't want other people to see if Clark had to do some superhuman thing. So he went to save the dog but got stuck. In the final moment, Clark tries to go but looks at the people, as his dad taught him not to do superhuman things in front of people. So he's looking for his father's permission to do that. But his dad denied it. In the next scene, he explains it to Luis.

In this movie, the people of Krypton are genetically preprogrammed to certain roles. That probably helped with keeping order but sacrificing creativity and adaptability. That seems to be the reason why the government couldn’t make smart decisions regarding the destruction of their planet and why they followed protocol with punishing Zod and his group. They could no longer think outside the box. I think Jor and Kara figured that sending all of the preprogrammed babies would perpetuate the problem thus sending the only natural unprogrammed baby.

His fathers line is one I really like and usually defend against the consensus of people who hated it. I've had long discussions on why it belongs. I won't bore you with the long version but the short version is that I think that people who hate the line, lack empathy. The same people who hate the line, If given the choice between saving their own family or letting 20 other people die, will save their own family. Of course they would. Most people would make that choice and understand it from a moral point of view. Thats all Clark's father is doing. Saving his own son by sacrificing others. He's not a hypocrit either, he even lets himself die to protect Clark. Because he is of the opinion, one I share, that if a superman type figure existed in reality.........we would kill him. Or try to. Some people would worship him as a god, but most of the planet would immediately try to kill/control/disect him. He is putting his family first, like anyone would do. When asked "Should I have let them die?", he didn't even say YES!. He said maybe. Showing he is still somewhat conflicted, even though he is in a strong moral position in a desire to protect his son. It's a great line and the comic book junkies who hated it lack empathy and display naiviety that this more grounded superhero film is trying to avoid.

If we as viewers are put in Zod's shoes we can completely understand every step he takes and his logic and reasoning behind them. All of Krypton practiced eugenics. Zeal is going to come with the territory of being selectively bred to be the greatest military tactician and commander of your entire species. Defense and survival of Krypton are everything to him. Of course a military coup to overthrow a failed government will be one of his actions.

This film had so much in it, Zack Snyder has a really strong visual style, the scene where Jor El’s consciousness is explaining the history of Krypton looks like a direct homage to Georges Melies “From the earth to the moon” stylistically. A lot of the beats in this film track a lot w/ Joseph Campbell’s “The hero’s Journey” and alot of the religious iconography and metaphors are visually striking. Jax, when you do see the later films, the extended version of BVS, makes more sense than the theatrical cut, and the Snyder cut of Justice League is far more satisfying than the theatrical version. Also, when Clark destroyed that truck drivers property, it was actually kind of a good thing, He was drinking while in the bar, by destroying that truck, Clark kept a drunk driver off the road 😉

Many of us agree that the death of John Kent in the movie was stupid, or at least nonsensical within the context of world as presented. In other tellings of the Superman origin, the Kents are an older couple that had tried and failed to have children before finding Clark. So by the time Clark reaches his late teens, John is already into his sixties or beyond after living a hard life as a farmer in the early 1900s.(Superman debuted in 1938). Right around the time Clark reaches adulthood, the Kents die of natural causes. The best(IMO) versions of the story have John dying of a heart attack right in front of Clark. While traumatic, it shows a teen Clark that his superpowers(which are relatively new to him at this point) can't solve everything. This is a massively important lesson for a young adult to learn considering he's basically a teen with the powers of a minor god. Without that lesson, he would have acted more like a young Thor but with no Odin to reign him in. I understand what Synder was going for with John choosing to sacrifice himself to "protect" his son, but I think he just handled it very clumsily.

In every other version of Superman Jonathan Kent always dies before Clark becomes Superman. Its usually from a heart attack, which is boring. This time he died because he couldn't risk his sons powers being seen, which would've led to him becoming a science experiment. His death had purpose in this one, even if its not a popular decision with the general audience.

As a massive Superman fan I never cared for how they tried to "ground' Superman in the real world as to me the DC universe is not meant to be a complete reflection of our own reality but its own universe with fictional events, characters, and cities. When you make places like Metropolis look like another American City it loses alot of the personality of the universe, Metropolis a city of tomorrow designed around Art Deco with a very retro futuristic 1950s look should not look like a boring American City. Same problem I had with the later Nolan Batman films, Love Nolan's trilogy but it very much created a trend of "grounded" Superhero films with Man of Steel following this trend. Moved away from the more stylized depiction of Gotham City showcased in the comics and Tim Burton's Batman, and the Animated Series and featured a Gotham City that's basically just Chicago, Batman Begins had a solid Gotham City though. Films also featured a more grounded depictions of villains while also not featuring anyone with Super human abilities. Man of Steel beyond Krypton is very much pulled from Nolan's Batman films something I personally find odd as a Superman film should not have the same tone as a Batman film. But overall the film has grown on me and going into the DCEU it's best t look at them as Elseworld stories (Stories set beyond the mainline DC universe) where characters are depicted from the point of view of Zack Snyder, very much his take on this characters for better or for worse depending on who you ask. James Gunn's DCU seems to be more inspired by the mainline comics so I imagine that will be closer to the tone of the more hopeful Superman comics with alot of colour, hopefully cosmic locations, and a Metropolis that actually looks like Metropolis.

Great reaction Jax. What I love about this film and the 1980s Superman with Christopher Reeves (who Henry Cavil idolized his portrayal), is that yes Superman had power, but it wasn't just his power. His father's wanted him to use his brain. The 1980s showed this more when Superman explains Geology to Lex Luthor. That shows Superman uses his mind (he is very intelligent/wise) more than just in his power to defeat his foes. Love or dislike Superman he is iconic. I was glad you noticed he chose violence as last resort. While cheezy by today's standards do give the original Superman with Christopher Reeves a watch. It is very good story. :)

As for the bully truck driver and his rig, it’s entirely possible that he’s what’s called an “owner/operator’, so he owns the truck outright or is making payments. Some O/O’s even buy their own trailers rather than haul another company’s. It narrows down the types of loads you can move but it can be cost effective if you only move a certain product and there’s an abundance of said product like say, lumber? Now the logs would belong to some company but let’s face it, the monetary loss for the driver would outweigh a punch in the face.

A few notes: 1. I know you come from the MCU, where superheroes slaughter people left and right, but Superman doesn't really kill (it's extremely rare). Which is why him deleting Zod was such an incredible scene. 2. It's DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and while Nolan's trilogy is exceptional, it's not actually part of the core DCEU, not really anyways. But it's definitely a must-watch. 3. Kryptonians, not Kryptonites. 4. The "dark" tones of the movie is Zack Snyder mostly. The comics aren't nearly as dark and Superman can be quite cheerful. Having said that he's always been a bit broody in the comics, but he's definitely portrayed on a more serious note in Zack Snyder's movies. 5. Superman is my favorite DC superhero. A lot of people think he's boring, because of how powerful and righteous he is, but I don't care. He's awesome.

I dont know if it was necessary or not in the context of this film, but killing zod was a bad move. At least for the introductory movie of the superman character in the DCEU. We never established that he doesnt kill, so it holds little weight. Because he does kill, and he did kill in the very first movie, so there is no trend set and no trend broken. That seriously disparages the comic book character and makes him no better than any other hero. It doesnt come as a shock to anyone who isnt a superman fan, and those who are take offense to the act.

Speaking of superhero slaughter, punching Zod through buildings dozens of times isn't exactly a great way to not kill people, with *many* people dying each time he does it. We're looking at 10's of thousands of dead, if not more. Nobody in the MCU does anything that reckless, even Hulk. Even in Age of Ultron when Iron Man pushes Hulk through the building (just one, not dozens like in Man of Steel) he makes sure it's clear of civilians. In the final battle of Age of Ultron, all people are evacuated on ships provided by Nick Fury, helped by these supposedly genocidal heroes. In the first Avengers movie, Captain America worked with police forces to get people away from the action. So no, the MCU is pretty good about factoring in the innocents and reducing casualties. Civil War at least deals with the consequences of previous movies well. How many thousands are dead because of the grudge match in Man of Steel? Is it in any way realistic that Superman immediately goes back to normal following what was certainly the death of many thousands of people? He might not have been mourning the family he saved from Zod, mourn the thousands of other dead. There's no attempt in the 3rd act to show Superman actually saving innocent civilians. At least in the Avengers movies, there's actually time dedicated to getting the innocent people to safety. None of that here. Quite ironic that you've managed to reverse this reality in your head.

Loved you how you noticed the bus door and the other odd things in the movie. The concept of free will is beautifully captured. Also there's a great contrast having the theme of gravity/ wave mechanics and matter formations. It's like turning air into gold. I really love Zak Snyders watchmen and can not wait to see that reaction. Also, the flash is another pretty good movie. My favorite dc hero is batman. I prefer Marvel characters, especially the villains, for some reason, but dc really has a different tone when it comes to most of their films. Always remember for every little detail you see happen in a these kinds of movies there is a what if. What if it went left instead of right so on so forth. Also you look absolutely stunning omg. I can't stand the people who think Superman is a boring character. The exploration of morality and responsibility that he allows, since he's so powerful that nothing can really _physically_ threaten him, shows how it's all about making the right choice and that's his struggle. The flashbacks really leaned into that, with him struggling through his choices. Pushing his anger down, saving people, _not_ saving people. The true struggle of a hero is making the right choice and acting on it. You can be immensely powerful, but some things are still out of your control. All you can do is be the best person you can be, help who you can, and accept that it might not always be everybody. I really love Superman. I'm very happy you enjoyed the movie, because a lot of people have some pretty horrible things to say about it (though, many have started to come around in the years since its release). Sure, it wasn't the perfect representation of the character (immediately killing off Zod is something that never sat well with me - but Clark does show tremendous sadness and remorse about it), but it was a pretty interesting dive into how a "realistic" version of Superman might exist. Some lines still choke me up, too, even after the dozen or so watches I've made of the film.

If you liked this, you'll love the original Christopher Reeves Superman. Also the 1989 Batman with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton. You will find a deeper appreciation for the DC hero's

Great review as always Jax 👍. When u do Batman v Superman and Justice league, make sure you watch the unedited versions. They might be longer but they are so much better. I fully believe the WB/dcu hire chimpanzees to edit the initial versions. The directors cut of BvS and the Snyder cut of JL are the real deal. This coming from a lifelong marvel fan. And I really believe that WB/DCEU did themselves a big silly by getting rid of Henry Cavill(the best Superman to date)….

I much prefer the Christopher Reeve version. It has much more heart, wit, and charm. Reeve looks like he stepped right out of the comics. As good as his Superman is, his Clark Kent is even better. Reeve created a Clark that you would never believe for a second could possibly be Superman. Despite the fact that, without his glasses, he looks just like him. There's a great scene where Clark takes off his glasses and with just a change in posture and deepening of his voice, becomes Superman right before our eyes. Cavill plays Clark as Superman with glasses. Plus, the Reeve film has John Williams' iconic score. Frankly, without the John Williams Superman theme, it just doesn't feel like Superman. Maybe the 1978 effects can't compete with today's CGI. But all I know is that I've lost count of how many times I've seen the 1978 Superman. But I've only seen Man of Steel once. BTW, Superman's S was just an S in the comics. It had nothing to do with Krypton or Superman's family. But when they made the 1978 film, Marlon Brando would only agree to play Jor El, Superman's father, if he could wear the S (OK, that and $4 million). So, they made the S sort of a family crest. Since then, the comics rebooted Superman and made the S a Kryptonian symbol.

@@KonohazFinest not before the 1978 film. That was the first time we saw the S symbol being worn by Jor El. When John Byrne rebooted Superman in the comics in 1986, he included a lot of elements from the 1978 movie. He completely changed the way Krypton looked, which had been pretty standard since the 50s (Jor El always shown wearing green and red with a sun emblem on his chest). He got rid of the Superboy years, instead having Clark first appear in costume as an adult. Previously, it was Ma Kent who made the Superboy costume out of the blankets he was wrapped in when they found him. That's why his suit was also indestructible. Byrne also changed Luthor from someone who grew up in Smallville with Clark and was once Superboy's friend to the billionaire tycoon who lived in Metropolis when Clark arrived.

Here's a thought that makes even more incomprehensible. General Zod has a Terraform machine. Why don't Venus or Mars terraform and coexist as species? If the general cared about the people, he would have sought a neutral path. When I saw the film, this point bothered me the most. Also the fact that the key could be taken out of Clark's DNA without killing him. Nobody stopped for a moment and said... "hey, why don't we solve the problem like civilized beings." These two points bother me, considering that all the points were there to resolve the whole thing peacefully. Sure, it's just a movie, and no one would go to the cinema to watch a Kryptian and an Earthling talk for a few minutes about terraforming in order to find peaceful solutions. What I would have liked to see is that perhaps Ka el at one point accuses Zod of not taking this path. Then you could understand it a little better. It's like a giant elephant in the room that no one talks about.

It depends on the comics as to his father's death. Different versions have it that he does die, other versions is that he doesn't die. In an older Superman movie, his father dies from a heart attack and it's a more powerful lesson in that for all all his powers and things he can do, he can't save everyone.

This movie is so good. Loved your reaction. Some of my thoughts on some of your questions/comments: The council was so arrogant they didn't believe the planet was really in danger. So they didn't see a need to flee until it was too late to do anything. The death of his dad is an important moment in his life but, I agree that it's the weakest part of this film. I don't like the way it happened in the movie either. Clark's never been in a fight before so he has no control. He's going on pure emotion. Sadly, the destruction is a side effect of never having done this before. Its nice to see someone not be focused on the damage caused by the final showdown. The fight between Zod and Clark is so visually impressive it becomes what most people focus on and blame the destruction on. However, the fight damage is miniscule compared to the devastation caused by the World Engine (that big open space they begin in used to be buildings and people). More buildings going down and people dying are terrible but it also stopped the entire world from being destroyed. To quote Star Trek: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". "Welcome to the Planet" is the best line and a great way to end the film.

Henry Cavill is great as Superman (and nearly everything else he does), but this movie is a burning wreck of a movie that never comes close to understanding Superman or Clark as characters. In response to your question about how Clark's father dies in the comics, he dies from heart problems I believe. This goes to show Clark that no matter how powerful he is, he is still helpless on some of the most important things in life. Man of Steel, tries to do that with the hurricane scene, but it fails miserably as you pointed out.

What you’re not understanding when Clark’s father made him stand under the overpass with his mother during the tornado is as a man and a father. He is going to do everything he can to protect his wife and child. They knew Clark was special, and had abilities, but at the time the father would not have known that his son was invulnerable. Plus, he was willing to sacrifice his life to keep his son identity hidden. Men sacrificed their lives this way every day.

Superman is the first superhero as we know them, there wouldn't be a superhero genre today without him. I don't know if you have already seen it or not, but I personally feel the only movie version of Superman that got the character mostly right was "Superman: The Movie" and most of "Superman 2," given the latter's production woes. Christopher Reeve was and still is Superman. RIP, Chris! John Williams' "breakfast of champions" theme for those classic films is the Superman theme. No others come close. Jax, if you have not seen the granddaddy of all superhero epics, do yourself a favor and watch it.

Reeve was a classically trained stage actor. There is a Richard Donner approved extended cut for Superman: The Movie. Then I highly recommend the theatrical cut of Superman 2 and then later on the Richard Donner Cut for an unfinished alternate take on Superman 2.

Snyder's take on these heroes is a violation. What's their moral boundary? BREAK IT. Not in a nuanced and compelling way, like Nolan's Batman, who DID NOT KILL or USE GUNS. It was his gestalt. It was his victory over the Joker. Snyder simply hates powered beings. He can't handle them unless he's breaking them spinally. and making them unlikable.

I will defend this version of the death of Jonathan Kent until the day I die. It was ABSOLUTELY the right choice. The thing that people misunderstand with this version of Superman is: in the other incarnations, and even in other superhero origin stories, the question the hero has to answer is, "when is it appropriate for me to use my abilities?" With this one, the question is, "when should I *not* use my abilities?" That's what Jonathan was trying to teach Clark, and that's why Jonathan died. It's the other side of the "great power, great responsibility" coin. The director David Fincher put it this way: when you can do *anything,* the question isn't 'what do you do, but what *don't* you do?" Jonathan believed that if Clark was going to use his abilities, he has to use them for something greater than saving himself, the members of his family, or the people around him; he has to save *EVERYONE*. Jonathan was willing to die to ensure that his son would not have to reveal the truth of who he was before either he was ready or the time was right. Because if Clark reveals himself prematurely, the governments of the world would conclude that he was a threat, and they would hunt him for the rest of his life until they developed a way to kill him. But if Clark saves the entire world, not choosing sides, not being selfish, he would build trust with the people of Earth. They would judge him by the content of his character, not by where he's from or what he can do.

That’s a very good explanation of Jonathan Kent’s reasons for not letting Clark save him. It’s something that has been a point of contention for many years for people who’ve seen this film, myself included. It’s a nuanced, but logical understanding of ultimately how the world, humanity especially, fear what they are not ready for. While it does deviate from the classic portrayal of Jonathan Kent, it does line up with Zack Snyder’s more sci-fi/alien approach to Superman in this film.
