from ages 17-21 I was locked in my room all day smoking weed and playing video games. No job, no friends, no girlfriend. Had thousands of hours logged in. One day I had this painful feeling at the pit of my stomach out of blue as I as loading up a game. Realized I needed something else and I was wasting my life. Scrapped up the the 4 grand I had saved up over the years (because I had nothing to spend it on before) and bought a plane ticket to Europe. Spent 3 months traveling around southern europe and the middle east. Came back energized about life. Opened my computer and was disgusted at the time I wasted doing nothing. That was my 22nd birthday. I now just turned 23 about to transfer from a community college to a top university with the end goal into becoming an architect. Haven't touched any drugs or alcohol in a year. Long journey ahead but I'm looking forward to it I think some people just need to be forced out their comfort zones to kick them into overdrive. It is so so easy to be comfortable nowadays especially with hands off lax parenting. My parents didn't know what to do with me but they were too weak to just kick me out of the house and force me to fend for myself

@DOPEdwarf
@DOPEdwarf 3 жыл бұрын
@@vicegardens5546 I'm in California that has a robust public college system. UC and CSU schools are all tied to community colleges and have an easy path to tranfer as they are set up for it. The schools also by law have to accept a certain number of students from a California community college every year for tranfer. I basically got all As for 4 semesters and then applied to every UC. I got accepted to every school. I was deciding between UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and Cal poly for my school. You can definitely apply to private schools too but it is more difficult, in regards to both competitiveness level(most privates don't take many tranfers, especially from CCs) and figuring out what classes would actually tranfer to their approved units. Also, for me the UCs gave me very good financial aid so I am barely paying anything for tuition.

He competes in long distance bike races with 100 guys and always comes home in the single digits (He was a BMX Pro at 17) and most importantly he's given his life to his new lord and savior Jesus Christ. @@canyonsand "Considering how much of an encumbrance religion is to scientific progression and mental dexterity." At this point in time I think most Western civilizations are as far from religion as they've ever been, and the data seems to indicate that general intelligence is getting lower. Science has given us pills to rewire our brains into thinking we're happy and little black rectangles that spew out porn and artificial enjoyment for our dopamine reward systems to burn out on. I'm not a concrete believer in any diety, and I'm not in opposition to science, but this cult of science idealism isn't as likely as people try to make it seem. Religion isn't always bad and science isn't always good.

I started to learn to program when I was 27 -- I set a goal to get a job as a software engineer by age 30. I probably only really started doing it daily by 29 when I was able to get into a masters program for computer science (I have a degree in music lol), but before that I just kinda built up some general skills -- went on coursera and did a course called Learning How to Learn, and another called Introduction to Mathematical Thinking. I pushed hard and got a distinction grade in the MSc and had a job ready before I had even finished. I'm 33 now hoping to be a Senior Engineer by 34. Bought a house, learned to drive and have a car now. So ultimately, I turned around my life and I'm earning about 4-5 times more than I used to earn. So I don't think you're wrong that you need a skill, but if you are determined you can make it happen regardles of age. When all is said and done though, learning to actually experience and enjoy the present moment is a skill -- focusing on the future, while it's nice to work towards, doesn't give you much if you aren't able to enjoy the present.

I always thought "learn to code" was just meant as an insult towards journalists with no useful skills, and that a real career in coding is just becoming a pajeet spiraling down an endless hole of useless StackOverflow questions. Does that sound right?
@Chansd5
@Chansd5 3 жыл бұрын
I was 27 waiting tables and dedicated my nights to programming. I'm 33 now, work as a devops engineer and just bought my first house in NYC. The takeaway I noticed is that many of my friends I personally helped to learn code were still in various stages of trying to succeed to be engineers. I was in a really low stage of my life as I watched customers some with their six figure corporate jobs in suits eating at my restaurant and decided this was something I wanted. I had to sacrificed my social life and fun game time on Steam to get it. That want, is impossible to teach. I wish I can and see my friends (some in their early 40s barely scraping by) all thrive. But Sam is right, by the time you're mid and late 30s, you got even more factors and shit in your life, never mind neuroplasticity.

I am 27 years old and only just saw this video in its entirety this morning. After it ended, I called and had a talk with my dad and was honest about my life for the first time in years. I haven't done a thing with it since high school and have just coasted by. I have a roof over my head and am surviving, but I'm not living and I've been alone for over half a decade. I don't even work and haven't held a stable job for 5+ years. I abused drugs, I gained a ton of weight. I'm sick of living like this. I've managed to lose 30 pounds, and I haven't touched drugs or alcohol in a couple of months now. I really needed this advice. I'm going to try to listen to this every day. I really hope that I make it and can stay motivated enough to hold down a job and climb the ladder. I'm going to try. Thank you Sam.

Growing up, I resisted falling into one crowd because I didn't want to be pigeon-holed into a stereotype. I didn't want to be one of the nerds or jocks or stoners or chads. I just wanted my own identity. But that got mutated into "Well, now I don't want to get deeply involved with anything." That includes hobbies, skills, and relationships. Because one day you might be told "Hey we actually don't need you anymore," so I thought I should be flexible and be able change gears, quickly and decisively. So while I've certainly explored a lot of what the world has to offer, I still haven't settled on one thing yet, and I'm getting a little worried because maybe it's not that I haven't found my Thing yet, it's that I'm afraid to commit to a Thing. I don't know, but thanks Sam for some solid advice

You aren't alone man. I was too short and skinny to be a jock (I ran XC but that doesn't count as "jock" to the ladies), but loved being outdoors too much to be a nerd. The first 2 things that gave me a sense of identity by high school were (sadly) rapping and weed. By that point I was "accepted" by most kids, but not really embraced. Well of course that degenerate culture only leads down. At 20 I was riding around the whole state in a GLI, selling poison (not calling weed poison I mean much worse stuff), having major cash on hand, girls twerking as soon as I hopped onstage etc. But my 21st birthday was spent walking down a tiny patch of grass beside the highway, tweaked out on coke but broke, wondering why TF my "friend" wasn't answering my calls about WHERE TF DID YOU TAKE MY CAR BRO?!?! Got the whip back but regardless, by that point I knew I was on the wrong path. Left the dope game and just settled on drinking myself into pure oblivion. Was on death's door when I just felt a force going "you are demon possesed bro". Started listening to a sermon by an ex-junkie, and nearly got strangled by a python demon that was screaming "YOU WILL NEVERRRR GET ME OUT!!!!". A year and a half later, I'm back in college about to graduate, working in the legal cannabis industry to help recovering addicts, and preparing for a life as a pastor/deliverance minister. MAN how Christ can change things. My bad for writing a book lol but just wanted to say that you CAN gain skills, but you gotta be on GOD's side to live right. Blessings to you bro

Really solid advice, especially for younger men. I disagree about learning when you're older though. As long as you continue to be physically and mentally active your brain can still be receptive to learning. I bought a shit tip of a house at 31 for a steal knowing nothing about property renovation. Everything I needed to know I read up on or watched KZbin videos on various skills like plastering, joinery, plumbing, roofing etc. I'm not an expert in those things, as I only need to do repair jobs on a solid foundation, I learned what I needed to renovate the house. Negotiated a sale, made a killer profit and now I'm renovating my third place and snowballing my savings to the point where I should live mortgage free in a nice place in a couple more investments. I'm 35 now and still learning, improving my health, and improving my lifts too of course!
@bakielh229
@bakielh229 4 жыл бұрын
I think it boils down to motivation and health too as you said. But also, if you lived 30 years without any pressure to improve or learn any skills, the logical conclusion is that you are successful somehow, because, well, you've made it that far. To anyone watching this and thinking well there goes my chance, I'll never do anything Everything is learnable including the ability to learn. Just do something, Sam says lifting, I honestly find running and going to the gym boring. I'm absolutely not unfit, I just find it too excessive and unauthentic. There's no sense of achievement, why should I waste my energy on something so pointless? I would rather pour that energy into something productive.

@WinstonDreadmore 4 жыл бұрын
@@bakielh229 So what do you do to stay healthy?
@bakielh229
@bakielh229 4 жыл бұрын
@@WinstonDreadmore I'm already healthy. The only thing I was doing that was fucking up my health was smoking, which I quit two years ago. I'm a social worker and my job entails a lot of mobility. Never eat out unless it's an occasion, don't drink or do drugs. If you're young you aren't supposed to make an effort to stay healthy unless you do something else that offsets your natural health. I think the real plague of modern living is mental health, intelligence is a new thing evolutionarily speaking and it's not fine tuned to a sedentary, high stress/safe environment lifestyle. I feel like I belong when I'm hiking or camping , also found meditating once or so a day to be helpful, CBT to change maldaptive behaviours and thoughts. This might not be your cup of tea, but you have to do something you enjoy and find meaningful, it sounds simple but it's a journey to figure that out and make it happen despite everything else. What do you do?

Celtic Phoenix that’s drain cleaning which a lot of plumbers including myself don’t do. Vast majority of what I do is making it possible for people to have hot or filtered water to their house or business. Society couldn’t be the way it is without the access to water that were all used to

I call BS on the post-30 thing. If you practice something 2 hours a day you will become decent in a year. If you're unemployed and really put your mind to something you can invest 8 hours a day, that's almost 3k hours in a year. If you can't learn a skill in 3k hours at a professional level, it's your IQ holding you back, not neuroplasticity.

If that's true, I'm happy to hear it. Now, why the shit do you have shitty coors as your profile pic? I'm not going to begrudge you getting drunk a few times, but try to stay away from that garbage (alcohol). I'm almost 30 and began drinking at 13, I can't tell you how much that decision and habit fucked up my life.

Trade schools are one thing the states needs to work on a lot more. The way college tuition is these days, your really committing economic suicide in your early 20’s if you’re don’t get a worth while degree to pay off the student loan. Trade schools actually give people a fucking skill instead of sitting in a bullshit classroom so your can get your liberal arts degree.

Sam coming through with another solid advice. Gonna add a few points. If your life situation resembles the one he describes in the video the most important thing you should do after watching it is to try as hard as you can to not give in to self hate. Basically you start to waste your time by hating yourself for wasting time, then later you realize that you could’ve spend THAT time on something productive and you end up hating yourself even more. I’m not saying you shouldn’t self-reflect at all, but it should propel you forward instead of stalling your progress. So, if it fucks you up, just try to spend as little time on it as possible atm and instead fully commit to doing something with your life. Your inner demons can wait, you can face them later on with a healthier mindset.
