Your reactions while painting had us laughing! We know for certain that art tutorials have proven value, so we're not surprised that you reached the same conclusion. We see tons of artists who have self-trained using content like the one you used, and from videos like yours, too! That's why we show up here all the time- the content and the community are terrific!

I don't like following tutorials step by step, but I do like watching them and picking up techniques. Also your little doggy intro is adorable!

I feel like watching the tutorial beforehand helps a LOT avoid that feeling of having to pause every 2 seconds and helps avoid small mistakes

Tutorials always look easier then they are to follow. I too am not able to make tree branches and leaves look natural and normal. A simple tree is like trying to understand rocket science. It is so great to see great artists struggle and feel all the stresses, in our minds you all never have. You painting came out great.

if it were me I probably wouldn't risk doing it so late in the season, but since it's the beginning of the month if you can get it all made and posted online/in shops within the next few days, you could totally still make it work!!

I always laugh at painting tutorials sometimes because its like "Step 1: make a sketch. Step 2: paint. Step 3:Done" 😂! I love this video

never forget, we watch tutorials so we're not sitting here,in a void, reinventing the wheel. if someome figured it out already, why not take what they have and run from there?

I feel like a better name for a tutorial is just a guided study?? Like the value in them comes less from replicating the piece and more from learning the artist’s techniques to then use in your own art y’know??
@Lilstarnerd
@Lilstarnerd Жыл бұрын
that's a good point!! but i think there are a lot of people who do find the value in replicating a piece, but i think this is definitely true for this higher-level tutorials!

I love tutorials because they are a resource that I use when I’m trying to learn how to paint a new subject. For example, if I’m trying to learn a particular flower I start off by following several tutorials on KZbin about how to paint or draw that flower then I move into my sketchbook where I will often combine the techniques I learned to create my own way of creating that flower using reference images. I’ve found that doing those things really helps me understand the subject better😁

This was thoroughly enjoyable. You are a delight. I have to admit I was kinda getting palm tree vibes from your trees in the back. As a fellow Floridian I feel like being inundated with palm trees everywhere has you seeing them in all trees sometimes. Your end result was excellent! Thanks for a great video.

This was SO fun to watch, and I mean this in the absolute nicest way possible, it was really nice to see you in full panic and not confident in what you are painting mode... it just felt so comforting to know I'm not the only one second guessing every brushtroke, haha! Also I think yours turned out amazing considering it was such a short tutorial, and I love love love your final takeaways too!

I think it's interesting that you have trouble with organic material compared to anatomy. 3D pieces and figures are an issue for me because I have trouble visualizing how it's supposed to be laid down on the page. To me nature and organic materials are much more forgiving and can have some room for suggestions. The way you did the forrest texture is exactly how I would've done it! I love to combine references or looking at other brush patterns. I love this painting!

Tutorials are great to learn new techniques, I highly recommend watching the tutorial through once or even twice before doing anything, then following along with your medium of choice - you'll notice you remember the steps already and pick up little things you didn't initially see but it makes for a much smoother tutorial learning process.

maybe another workflow might be more helpful to you. like for example watching the video before painting and taking notes about the things she does. not how it looks exactly but the steps she takes to get to the finished pieces. then you can start painting without feeling so lost because you know where you're going with your painting and what the next step after the one you're currently doing it's not so stressful. You can still stop and rewind the video, but you at least donT' have to do it blindly trusting the video. I think it might also help with keeping your head more engaged and encourage creative decisions while still following the tutorials quint essence. I also like first following a tutorial as-is and then pick my own stuff and my own reference and try to apply the technique to one of my own ideas.
@loati94

I only find tutorials useful if I can see the reference photo to compare and figure out how the process of creating the painting works. Then you can do it your way and compare how the artist does it. If they are just tutorials like "follow along and copy what I do without knowing why I'm doing it" they are useless to me.

I don't comment a lot but this video is really great ! I love how you paint, and it helped me realize that it's normal and even great if our art doesn't look exactly as the tutorial :) I thought it was only me ahah. I would love to see you trying more !

😂 omg it’s so funny that you post this. This is my gut wrenching challenge. It’s so awkward right lol that’s why I haven’t had one up yet. Lol but you do great ❤ I love that you’re authentic with the post to I like how you show what it’s really like lol I always get colormixing questions . I really don’t know how to handle questions about mixing color, it’s hard to contemplate colormixing videos. I’m just like mix it see what it no your color well lol. But theory is very cool 😎

Ah! I feel your pain. I've tried to do something similar with other KZbinrs I found that posted tutorials of gouache landscapes. It's not at all as easy as they make it look! But I love Ruth's work as well. I didn't know she had a KZbin channel, but I do know that she has a Domestika course! I bought it, but I have yet to try out any of the lessons. Maybe take a look and see if she goes more in-depth? I would have to think she does. She may even break down a scene, showing how to paint a tree or a bush first before incorporating them into a full landscape. Either way, I think you did a fantastic job! :)

It was fun to watch you struggle (mwahaha!). No, but really, this was so interesting to see what you got out of following the tutorial. I want to try the same scene now! I am new-ish to art and can do virtually nothing from my head, and I love following along with tutorials or even just watching them to hear the artist's explanation.
