As I've put out there already, yes, this is a societal issue but more specifically, a parenting issue. Doesn't matter how well off a family is, if they are not diligently parenting their children then this behavior can happen. This type of behavior doesn't need to be a result of severe trauma, it could also be a result of a lack of parenting/a level of parental neglect. Most parents are not parenting their children diligently, hence why society is as distorted as it is, plain and simple.
