So, Yin and Yang, you mention that the dark side isn't Yang... WELL DUH! Yang is supposed to represent sunlight, masculine energies... IE what is seen as the white side of the Yin amd Yang symbol. Also, agree that what you meant with Yin not being dark side as well, as it's suppose to be moonlight, feminine energies. I do know that there's more when it deals with Yin and Yang meanings... OH AND THE DARK SPOT IN THE YANG AND LIGHT SPOT IN THE YIN IS SPITTING RIGHT IN THAT COMPARISON AS IT SAYS YOU CAN'T BE YANG WITHOUT A LITTLE YIN!

@@Lily_Orchard Years ago a Sociology professor explained a part of Daoism and Yin/Yang with this story: "It also represents that something good might have the seeds for something bad and something bad might yet yield the seeds of something good; it is important for the Daoist to not separate out good and bad events into separate categories, but to recognize it is a whole of life. Take the parable of the Taoist Farmer: 'There was once a farmer in ancient China who owned a horse. “You are so lucky!” his neighbors told him, “to have a horse to pull the cart for you.” “Maybe,” the farmer replied. One day he didn’t latch the gate properly and the horse ran away. “Oh no! That's terrible news!” his neighbors cried. “Such bad luck!” “Maybe,” the farmer replied. A few days later the horse returned, bringing with it six wild horses. “How fantastic! You are so lucky,” his neighbors said. “Maybe,” the farmer replied. The following week the farmer’s son was breaking-in one of the wild horses when it threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. “Oh no!” the neighbors cried. “Such bad luck, all over again!” “Maybe,” the farmer replied. The next day soldiers came and took away all the young men to fight in the army. The farmer’s son was left behind. “You're so lucky!” his neighbors cried. “Maybe,” the farmer replied.' The farmer does not and cannot know how things will play out and will detach themselves in order to look to see how they can move forward/turn it to their advantage by keeping their mind open."

I see some analogy with the flaws of the Jedi and western religions like Christianity being the most obvious, seeing themselves as being good and pure and serving the light to the point where anything with dark side connotations, even desire and attachment is forbidden, creating secrecy in the order which could sooner lead one to the dark side if they feel they have no one to confide in, in the real world leading one to rejecting faith and taking an interest in the left hand path, the only difference being in the world of Star Wars the power of the Sith corrupts

@Yong Wen Lucas and others working on Star Wars just inserted bits from East Asia's theologies and philosophies and occultism. The Dark Side in many of their depictions is pretty much portrayed as demonic supervillains with corpse colored skin and doing stuff like necromancy. Many of the ones working on Star Wars are Westerners who even if trying to use non-Western teaching still needs to frame them though a Western lens. It's what Avatar's sequel with Korra did where the yin spirit was a cackling demon lord associated with darkness trying to make the whole world ruled by him with his forces backing him.

The force is like a knife, a tool. You can do good and evil with it. You can make sandwiches with it or kill people. Because you make sandwiches all the time does not mean that you cannot kill someone and vice versa. But it is "too complex" for an audience that wants a clear yes or no answer.

Totally agree. There were a few force users that were on the neutral side that didn't care about the war, as long as that war didn't show up on their door step. The lothewolves only helped Ezra because they saw potential in him and were worried that their home world was in danger of being destroyed. The other creature on the planet that the main rebels were hiding on, he basically said he would wipe out both sides of the conflict if they bring their fight to his home planet. And he acted on that threat.

The Force is literally God, and the belief that it is a mere tool is the basis of the dark side. I find that more interesting than yet another "there's a magic power system that a bunch of grey-and-grey morality people use for their own ends." There's a million of those, Star Wars is black and white but when you think about it it's black and white in a way that's pretty weird and unconventional. The good guys are monks who ban marriage, you don't see shit like that compared to all the "power of love" stuff everywhere. It's not a practical philosophy to live by, but I find that the Jedi having their own weird beliefs that don't line up with the audience's idea of good more interesting as fiction.

The fact that the jedi left Anakin's mom in slavery and then threatened to boot him back into said slavery was always gross to me. Anakin had been through a traumatic situation and no one thought the kid may need more then, "it is the will of the force". No wonder he fell for Padme, she was the only one who gave him any affection during a time he was a scared little boy. And the concept of taking babies from parents and then not allowing any deep affection or connection... That sounds like a good way to raise a bunch of sociopaths, sure didn't do Anakin any good. Vader helping off the order was in a way bringing balance back. The Jedi were not great and shit had to change.

@@nutellaninja4667 I disagree. If you count legends ( and who doesn't?) They actually have stories about parents trying to get their kids back by hiring bounty hunters. Take any child development class and you will learn that kids need affection and touch. It's actually viral to development that a child form bonds with at least one, primary care giver. It helps make them feel safe, loved, and secure. Trust me, just because most don't remember their families doesn't make the practice less harmful.

Who was controlled by a sith the whole time and they had no f****** idea. I always thought it was super messed up to take babies away from their parents. Isn't the point of both the original trillogy and the prequels that the Jedi of the Old Republic are morally wrong or at least flawed? Many Sith in our group write their characters as anti heroes or passionate defenders, while others focus on the Order is Strength approach and then others still embrace the full violence of the Dark Side and go full Evil. Its a lot more fun than the binary approach.

Hi Lily! I really like your analysis videos, especially about Star Wars. This video made me think about this great fanfic I read a while ago, "Reading Lessons with Madame Nu". Little Anakin makes some very important points about the difference between peace and order: “Sometimes change is a good thing,” Anakin scowled. “Being Freed was a change for me. Stability and Order aren’t the same thing as peace.” Ahsoka curled closer to him, and the other children looked thoughtful, while Madame Nu and Miss Haykar had these worried, upset looking faces. What were they so upset about? Did they not understand? “Like at home, on Tatooine,” he tried to explain to the adults, “There is Order, with the Hutts on top, but we the Am- the slaves, we do not have peace. Keeping Order on Tatooine is not the same as bringing Peace.” Why was he explaining this to them? Shouldn’t they know this already? They were older than him by a lot, but they kept acting like what Anakin was saying was brand new, like it was completely foreign to them. I'll attach the link below. But the gist is that Anakin's upbringing forces the Jedi to face some hard truths about themselves and the galaxy they live in. archiveofourown.org/works/33400552

I find it very interesting to take star wars and put into it philosophy behind using the force. Of interpretation of how Jedi and Sith looked at them. Even how to approach their codes and their interactions with the universe around force users that follow any of those orders. Or make new ones because modern understanding of force as part of forces of nature and not as black and white matter is far more complex and complicated - reflecting between the universe and those who live in it. However I would argue that reason why star wars got so very boring also lies in another place. Disney refuses to take risks. Also Lily said They cling so closely to first 6 films that even their TV shows are mostly shallow fan-service with very little to offer beyond that. People clap at Luke showing up even if in Book of Boba Fett all of him was computer generated from his body to his voice. It doesn't matter what quality call back is to main line of movies. Some people will clap at those references and eater eggs being included. Star Wars is getting more and more boring is because Disney is mostly milking this IP and putting very little back in (If anything at all) that can be built upon.

got agreements and disagreements with various parts of the video but GOD that bit about "palpatine wasn't evil because he's a sith lord, he's evil because he's a corrupt politician" is something I wanna hammer into the fandom and the current major star wars writers through their thick skulls. For me the answer to star wars being more interesting is more to just go so far forward that the status quo is totally different and all the players are new, whether jedi or sith are involved with the story or not or even still exist as the way the series handles the force. SWTOR has done enough for me with subversion of the existing paradigm, and it has done some great work, but I just want a new paradigm

Also, even though Yoda recognized that the Jedi was in the wrong, he can't seem to fully grasp what exactly was wrong, seeing as how he handled Luke is basically Anakin all over again. He even refused to train him on the basis that he's too old. Fun fact: Yoda actually wanted to train Leia because she seemed to be the less emotional of the two (to her credit, she took the lose her entire planet quite well). If Yoda's "there is another" line is any indication, it's likely that he thought Leia is the chosen one

This is the reason my love for fanfiction is so strong it could clean a yak at 200 WoW distance units, and give it a haircut in the process. So many pseudo-isekai crossovers dumping characters from other properties into the Far Far Away Galaxy and just having them ask what the f*** is wrong with the purported light-siders. A line from one in particular that always sticks with me, despite the latter chapters meandering off into space harem territory (although Obi Wan's crush on the male lead was a nice addition, QUILTBAG+Poly and/or queerplatonic usually gives me the warm fuzzies) and which, upon further reasearch, has turned out to be a paraphrased, Magic: The Gathering quote: "Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do."

I do like that the old Legends canon did tend to grapple a lot with the nature of the Force and the idea of the Dark Side. It wasn't always handled well, and Luke's opinion tended to vary wildly from series to series and writer to writer, but there were definitely times when the Dark Side was explored with nuance and tact. Plus, controversial as it was we actually got to SEE Jacen as he slowly fell from grace.

People have a hard time admitting that Lucas might not be perfect. I hate on Kotor I they have the formal slave become evil while having the main goal of returning to her home and freeing all the slaves. The writers make her "forget her original goal in the pursuit of Power" The sith would happily allow her to massacre the slavers and free her people. But the Jedi would see it as an "improper use of her Power" that shit right there man. That's in a perfectly distillation of why the light side dark side thing in star was is bullshit. I like in one of the last runs of the Legends books, the Jedi are put in the situation of having to actually side with or against the mass of slavery up rising occurring in the outer rim and one of the - Jedi Saba Sebatyne I think - admits that the order as a whole has been wrong to willfully ignore the existence of slavery in the galaxy just because it's outside of the the republic boarders. And Luke Skywalker himself admits that tethering the Jedi order themselves morally and politically to the Galactic Alliance was a mistake.

I've often said the dichotomy of Light and Dark sides of the force (especially with respect to their codes) was more Law vs Chaos than Good vs Evil. All the stuff in the Sith code is very Chaos aligned, doing what you want (non-good) or what you believe is right (good), no matter what, and actively opposing systems you don't agree with. The Jedi code on the other hand is, as you said, all about maintaining peace, order, the status quo. It literally decries Chaos with its last line

There's a video essay by Noah Gervais I like to rewatch that's technically about the KOTOR games, but mostly serves to show how much George Lucas used Joseph Campbell's original concept of the Hero's Journey to serve as the bedrock for how Star Wars works as a universe. So yeah, a guy from the 1940's with some really weird (and some misogynistic) ideas about how emotions should be handled is a big chunk of the reason why Star Wars has such weird morality issues. Which is probably related to why so many people freak out when someone tries to flesh Star Wars out into a universe where real people can live, doing that actually makes for a much deeper change than it looks like it should and we all know how much people *love* big changes to things. :/

I have always been a fan of the Old Republic’s willingness to expand upon the essence of the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force as more nuanced. That their respective users, while influenced slightly, are only as consumed by their respective aspect of the Force as they let themselves become. It also makes it enjoyable when you have characters like Lana and Marr just waltzing up to a Jedi and striking a cordial, philosophical conversation on the Force. Seriously, Marr and Satele have to be a Jedi-Sith relationship that I am happy to see be presented in Star Wars since it shows that the two orders can proceed to interact and even learn from one another without having to try and decapitate each other constantly.

Also the very idea that the stronger you are in the force the more likely you are to be turned to the dark side. Non-force sensitive people can be free with their anger, passion, fear, etc. because there’s no reaction to that by the force. But Anakin was virtually doomed to be on the dark side due to him being the most sensitive to the force. If he even felt a modicum of anger, fear, passion etc. his reaction to the dark side would be worse than anyone else’s cuz of his force sensitivity. He was doomed no matter the master, technique, or training he went through

The point about it being possible for light side users to still commit evil reminds me of something that can be seen during the Old Republic game. When a handful of Jedi masters received a prophecy about one of their padawans falling to the dark side, they chose to...kill almost all of them and then blame the crime on the survivor. Doesn't sound very heroic to me. The steps taken to avoid a particular future sometimes end up being the steps taken to make that future a certainty, and the Jedi forgoing their worldly attachments and emotions instead of treating their padawans with any semblance of true empathy and care can certainly lead to the future they were trying to prevent.

The way different people interpret the Sith Code in different ways reminds me of how different people in America interpreted the Book of Exodus. Many white Americans saw their country as something akin to a new Israel, with the favor of God that implies. Many black people, meanwhile, had a very different interpretation about how a story about a group of enslaved people who then escape being enslaved applied to their society, and took hope from it.

This is something I had a problem with in Star Wars There has to be a light side and a dark side, take away the dark side and the imbalance of it will create a vacuum. And nature abhors a vacuum I was excited when Kylo Ren said everything old should die, to form a new order thats perfectly in balance between the jedi and the sith while rejecting the extremes both ideologies bring. I didnt like the sequels as a whole, but the prospect of taking Star Wars in a new direction instead of just the repeat that was Force Awakens... that was great!

I like the New Jedi order series as well, and the Kotor comic with its conspiracy of prophecy obsessed Jedi faction who kill their own apprentices because 1 was "destined to become a sith", use deception and lies and are so self righteous they have no force corruption and can walk right past master Vandar. Yes there is a secret darksider but the group's depraved actions are not his actions. But the "Status seems to be the flavor of the day" I know you don't like Arcane but I find that's a lot of the commentary about the show. Jinx ruined "peace" by attacking the council who would have handed the Undercity to Silco. And she "kills random people!" Ignoring the fact those random people are Enforces, who repeatedly engage in wide spread brutality, oppression, collective punishment, imprisoning people without charge, and scapegoating all at the councils behest.

First of all, loved this video as I first found this channel thanks to your videos on Steven Universe and Legend of Korra. With this topic, I totally agree with you that it seems like the writers of the main Star Wars stuff seem to insist that the universe they’re created is one of binary good and evil, taking a Abrahamic approach to it when the force and characters themselves are much more complicated then that. There is a another video called ‘How Liberty Dies: The Politics of Star Wars’ which I think you would life as it does a great job using both the prequels and Clone Wars series to explain just why the republic fell and the Jedi were nearly wiped out, any very little of it had anything to do with the Dark Side. While Luke’s character was destroyed in the Disney movies, he wasn’t wrong in that the Jedi were not as great as people seem to remember them as, much like most moderates-they didn’t care if there was injustice-they only wanted a peace, even if that ‘peace’ was merely quiet. There was a scene in an episode of the Clone Wars where Ahsoka and Anakin sit in on a Senate meeting and when Ahsoka asks Padme and Anakin why they’re even fighting a war in the first place, and why the Jedi as peacekeepers aren’t taking a more active role in trying to deescalate tensions between the Republic and Separatists, Anakin gives an extremely simplified and bias answer, saying and I quote ‘The separatists believe that the republic is corrupt, but they’re wrong, and we have to restore order’. You could see that as a scene showing how little Anakin understood the situation, but it actually shows the Jedi prospective as the conflict as Anakin was raised by them since he was 9. They either were blind to, or refused to acknowledge that the Republic was in decay as that would mean needing to commit to major reforms and changes for both the republic and Jedi, and because that would lay partial fault for the terrible galaxy wide situation on them-they chose use the fact that Dooku was a Sith to invalidate the very real rot of the republic and feelings of the Separatists and instead just see this as the situation as the Sith causing another war for the heroic Jedi to squash. You actually brought up similar points in your Steven universe video where you made a short tangent on the Knights of the Old Republic and how the games do a great job at showing players the universe from the POV character aligned to the dark side, without adding in all that’s self destructive, blatant ‘dark side evil crap’ that the movies seem to do with the character in game themselves questioning those aspects of the Sith themselves, seeing them for that they are-pointless, self-defeating BS with no logical reasoning to back it up. The first force unleashed games also does this as Star Killer may practice the dark side, but he’s not evil for it and rather he’s evil because he was trained by Darth frickin Vader, even after Vader betrays you and you decide to fight against the empire-you can still use all the Sith techniques you’re picked up throughout the games such as force lightning which is supposed to be a high level Sith ability. It’s because you were connected with your emotions that you could even make the change, and why you could help to start the rebellion as you saw injustice, and sought to fight against it. Leila being the closest person to the fundamental Sith Code is something I’ve never considered, but at the same time-I feel like that was why Disney had it that she lost her political power after her father’s identity become public knowledge as she would have done her best to not just restore the republic-but fix the problems of the previous one that led to its downfall.

We need a cannon good Sith to join/become one of the protagonists in a Star Wars story and have them challenge the Jedi notions of anger. SWOTOR does this beautifully with Lana and several other Jedi characters to an extent as many of them seem confused by the notion of abandoning their emotions while also being compassionate. This is why I’m always confused by robots in media wanting to feel something. The simple fact that they don’t have emotions and are unfeeling would dictate that they do nothing because nothing brings them joy or sorrow. Emotion is our motivation for everything. This is also what happens during many depressions. People just stop feeling. Stop carrying. I don’t know about you but the “light” Jedi side side of the force sounds more and more like self imposed depression. If that’s the case, then where do I sign up to become Sith? Quick disclosure because I am not an expert but I do acknowledge that people experience depressions a little differently person to person.

To be fair, the Dark Side on the other hand is more like a drug that can consume you (or maybe more like alcohol, I dunno). A lot of the Sith are pretty much walking metaphors for substance abuse and addiction, lots of them even look like junkies. Of course there are a few (and I do say few) exceptions like the Nightsisters, who had managed to control the dark side (although a good chunk of them are not exactly the epitome of good either, besides maybe Merrin, but they're far from the evil that is Darth Sidious), and most famously Darth Vectivus who simply grew his knowledge of the Dark Side in secret, and is otherwise a good and honorable businessman who never once abused any of his powers. Also, the Sith as an Order is even worse than the Jedi. Someone like the Jedi Padawan "Scout" would never have made it as a Sith because she's so weak in the Force and strength is greatly valued among the Sith (Kreia would've loved her though), but she excelled as a Jedi in terms of physical prowess and creativity because as dogmatic as the Jedi are, they don't mind individuality among their members. She even managed to survive the purge. So in other words, the dark side is dangerous, but not inherently bad. The Sith are another thing entirely. Same for the Jedi really. The light side is ultimately good, but how the Jedi interprets it and the dark side is extremely flawed

With you 100% on this one, Star Wars breaking free of the stifling light side-dark side binary could only ever be a good thing opening the door for so many interesting characters and stories to take root. Give us some more Krieas and Lana Benikos (I mean not literally as that's hugely uncreative but you get the sentiment). I still can't get over how offensively dull George's own interpretation of 'balance to the force' is. This idea that the dark side is some sort of toxicity that needs to be cleansed from the Force's bloodstream. I think Mr Lucas has confused 'balance' with 'cleansing' as balance would suggest an equilibrium of sorts.

Talking points like this are the reason I like the morality system in ttrpgs like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder. People look at the nine alignments and think that they all need to be played the same way. When in reality, there is so much room for nuance in each alignment that you can have all sorts of characters be of the same alignment, but be significantly different in how they approach things. It allows for much more interesting characters, which results in a better story all around. Which usually means a more enjoyable experience for all involved.

My comment is not about star wars or the points you talked about (Tho I loved the points you talked about, might comment later on those!) My comment is a very big and fat THANK YOU! Thank you for the flash warning before the flash happens! It is very sad that this is something I feel I need to thank you for, but so often when I watch videos with a scene that is very flashy one of two things happen. A: There is no warning what so ever and I get very sick (I don't have epilepsy, but I am very sensitive to flashing lights and can at worst points pass out) or B: There is a warning at the start of the video, but it gives me no warning about when the flashing happens, meaning I either have to be extreamly careful watching the video or digging in the comments for a time stamp, or I have to skip the entire video in fear of getting sick. So again, thank you for giving a well in advance flash warning and also doing it in a way that lets me know "This is about to happen now, you can hear when it is done and enjoy the rest of the video"

I am so glad someone finally said it! The Dark Side users have so much potential for stories. I mean the light is nice, stories of falls or denying it, but the dark side can have that and much more! My favourite being what Lana said, overcoming personal weaknesses to become stronger. I think SWTOR Sith stories are actually good examples of that potential, as there is more than one path to the end. You can choose to be a proper Sith, or a psychopath, or an anti-hero or heck, maybe even switch sides. There are paths that are black and white, true, but the best and more numerous paths were those that let the players commit more grey choices, where sometimes the "evil" choice seemed better than the "good". I might be slightly biased on this, but the game basically changed my whole perspective on the Sith and their code, and I can only hope that the upcoming "Acolyte" series will actually explore the dark side as something more then just then the means of corruption.

@@Lily_Orchard You just made an entire video basically pointing out that the force is not something which controls a person to act in a certain way, but is more the catalyst used by that said person. I cant believe I wrote out that comment while listening to that point Haha- I just, I'm surprised I didn't realize my terrible wording before

Hopefully if Disney decided to have stories pre rule of two or a far off future with a new darkside sect.

⚠️Rant with no focus alert⚠️ This made me think of Kingdom Hearts. They do the Light vs Dark thing with not much more nuance but they still do it so much better. We see so many characters using the darkness without being controlled by it. The darkness is only ever corruptive when used to corrupt (or in a more literal sense with the heartless) eveyone who falls to darkness is either forced into it (Aqua & Sora) chooses to submit to it (Xehanort) or is just a generally negative person (Maleficent) The light side isnt shown as overly passive and cowardly heros of light usually throw the first punch. Riku and the Organization all the nobodies are darkness users in some form and a few of them use light as well but none of them are missled by the darkness they're tricked by Xemnas and it has nothing to do with darkness. Riku is consumed by the darkness twice and hates anything even related to it in COM, learns it's usefulness as a tool in 365/4 & KH2 then by DDS he learns what Eraqus should've told Terra, that the dark is a part of your heart and Riku is only able to become a master and fight off the ACTUAL evil people. The darkness only overtakes people who see it as inherently harmful .every character who accepts it as a natural part instead of the BIG EVIL become stronger as a result see Riku & Xehanort(and Mickey to a lesser extent bc the Kingdom Key D is described as being from the darkness)There's this kinda glossed over concept of "the twilight" to describe characters who belong neither to dark or light which is only Riku and the nobodies i think its weird bc it's meaning shifts between being literal and metaphorical but every character who's labeled as such was consumed by darkness and learned from it but here the dark doesn't make them super duper ouper evil it just changed them the same as any other experience. Where as in Star Wars it's just an interesting concept that writers consistently try (and fail) to make fit a morality system that doesn't even exist in Star Wars kinda reminds me of how Abraham Lincoln was going to let slavery continue to exist bc he didn't want to be the one to stir the pot and he assumed someone else would do it later. The Jedi letting the people who they think are sinister super fiends do whatever bc "we'll win eventually i guess..." (Insert more apathy here) Which is fitting bc the Jedi are pretty elitist themselves and this apathy likely only exists bc they're rarely the first target. Too often apathy = chill hate/ bored contempt

This makes me feel like rewriting the Sequel Trilogy where Finn and Rose go to another enemy of the First Order for help instead of…whatever they did in the second movie. First Order calls them terrorists and zealots. They kidnap (and deprogram) Storm Troopers and steal (other) slaves. The leader and several of his troops go to flank the First Orders ships. One of his students refers to him as “Master” and he shuts that shit down immediately. Finn and Rose go in his ship, they still get on a Star Destroyer and soon find out he’s a Elctroblade wielding badass with the Force in spades, and plans to kill everyone in the First Order without a helmet, and anyone else between him and them.

You know what I want? Someone to free the sand people!! There homes and religious lands have been taken by criminals and colonists. Can we have a story where anyone at least tries to help them. Would make Star Wars feel a lot better. I don't know if that's to boring then add some lesbians with lightsabers in or something. Just spitballing :)

It's not that they want batman... because if they wanted batman It'd be a non force sensitive badass who uses technology to combat force sensitives on their level. Someone weilding devices capable of altering gravity, reinforcing the body est est... You know... actually batman... That, would be cool, especialy if they use Kybercrystals in their tech *because* they are related to force sensitives. It's actually hilarious how often the media not helmed by George Lucas frames the darkside and lightside as two sides of one coin and neither good or evil. Heck the three part arc of The Clone Wars with, the Father, the Son, and the Daughter is one of them. The father isn't evil, he's actually good. But he's not light, he's gray. The son doesn't *become* evil because of the darkside. But because he gives *in* to his hate aggression and because he cut away his attachments. The daughter isn't good because of her lack of attachment. But because she cares about people, including her brother.
