Join me as I fish the popular Martello Castle in Lake Borgne to catch a limit of speckled trout!
Martello Castle is what we inshore anglers call a "community honey hole", meaning it's an easily recognized and obvious fishing spot that tends to give up really good speckled trout fishing, especially during the fall months.
But, like any community honey hole, it can become rather crowded and so pressured that fishing it becomes difficult.
Most people who fish this spot don't show up until well after the word is out! If they fish the conditions (rather than what they see on Facebook) then they'd be able to have the entire fishing location to themselves just like I did in this video.
Yes, I got there early (in September) and made the most of a strong falling tide to sit in one spot and catch an entire limit of speckled trout, all by myself.
Martello Castle is not the only spot in Lake Borgne that will turn on with speckled trout, and if you possess the knowledge and skills I teach inside LAFB Elite then you'll know EXACTLY where to go RIGHT NOW to catch an awesome box of speckled trout!

When you’re in water that deep and you don’t have a spot lock trolling motor, do you have to just drift through or do you drop an anchor? Twenty plus foot depth means a whole lot of anchor line.

I’m from Texas and in the state to work and wondering why Louisiana has a small trout limit size plus 25 fish limit. Texas only has a 5 fish limit plus 15 min. And down the lower coast even a 3 fish limit just wondering on your thoughts and does it hurt you guys from catching trophy trout
@LAFishBlog
@LAFishBlog 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, that's a great question, and I'll give you the best answer I can. What it boils down to is the fishery and how LDWF (and, by extension, the people of Louisiana) want it managed. First off, our fishery is vastly larger than that of Texas. It's not even close. Just look at aerial imagery on Google Earth and see all the marsh we have. That is that much more habitat that everything from shrimp to crabs to pogies, to speckled trout and redfish can grow in. The only state with more tidal shoreline than Louisiana is Alaska. I've taken people from across the United States and the world fishing on our coast and they all have the same thing to say: it's HUGE. So, we have more fish, so we can take more from our waters without threatening the spawning stock biomass. Which leads us to management: Louisiana's speckled trout are managed for maximum yield. That's because people here like keeping fish and eating them. Personally, I'd rather manage trout for sport fishing and not for groceries, and that's why I do practice so much catch and release: to set the example and cross my fingers that others follow it. No, not in this video I did but in many more I do. The idea behind the twelve inch minimum is to allow that individual speckled trout to spawn at least once in order to replace itself and create a few more before it is harvested. Hope that answers your question!

I have had dolphins do that to me too. They will pick up the trout right behind the head and swim off with it. There is no turning them at all. they just wait for the hook to pull out of the trout's mouth and then suck it down. Clever little devils. You will know because you will get the bait back basically unharmed or sometimes with trout but they will be crushed.
