A stop is basically a simple way of measuring exposure. its a doubling or halving of the exposure. Its kind of weird how its measured in terms of lens aperture as there is a little bit of algebra involved (dividing the focal length by the size of the lens aperture) and the results are not intuitive. but understanding why its measured the way it is doesnt change anything. But just think of it as a doubling or halving of the exposure is the best rule of thumb. (add one stop its twice as bright and vice versa) This can be affected by the lensing, or the lighting as you mentioned.
