Limmy got into him just at the end of Princes' imperial phase. Insane difference between 80's Prince and the later half of his career.

From Dirty Mind in 1980 to Sign o' The Times in 1987, all his albums are interesting. Always had weird interesting envelope-pushing stuff on them.

Self-titled from '79 had I Wanna Be Your Lover and the original I Feel for You (five years ahead of the cover everyone knows), but yeah, I probably do love Dirty Mind more as a whole album. I haven't got his debut (For You, '78) in my collection - as yet: it's not one of the ones I'm snubbing.

Prince is a treasure of humanity regardless of whatever batshit stuff he came out with. Compare with that prick Kanye West who is a self proclaimed genius Vs Prince who is a literal music savant. The film Purple Rain is essential viewing. Got about 8 conflicting themes but it's absolutely tremendous and hilarious.

No need to criticise Kanye to give Prince his props & I love both but if were being honest tho Prince is not as explicit or unhinged as Kanye it's not as if he did not act with a sense of self importance in public to say the least I think are Musical Geniuses I don't think Prince is a Music savant & Kanye is not even if he's not a multiinstrumentalist

Prince was a great minimalist who at a certain point tried to cram too much into his music, especially after Lovesexy. He built Paisley Park and he was essentially left to indulge at will; thereafter there’s just too much self-indulgence and the sound of not enough people around him to say “this is too much”. Too many tracks, too much music, too many releases. Of course there were gems in there but it became hard work. See also the Warners debacle and the aftermath. In terms of presentation, marketing, artwork, quality control, Warner Bros was the best ally Prince ever had.

The Batman soundtrack does seem like they asked him and he just took some stuff he had laying around and added Batman references and snippets. But it's still an awesome album, I love Trust (even though again it has nothing to do with Batman).

Aye Auld Pundy Mince had some classics but he did release a load of shite as well. 90's Prince was mostly terrible but 'Gold' is in my eyes one of his best songs, released in amongst a pile of shite.

Prince is massively overrated, even the 80s stuff. Went perfectly with the decade though. He looked cool, music videos were cool, he could play guitar, he could dance, but his songwriting was just fluff. Really simple nursery rhyme melodies, limited vocal range, tons of missed opportunities for vocal harmonies on choruses. Being a multi-intrumentalist is only impressive if the stuff you're writing is musically complex.
@whipchorus37262 жыл бұрын
Why is musical complexity something to aspire to if you’re a dab hand at a few instruments? Less is often more, Prince was a great minimalist. If you are a multi instrumentalist and know when to leave room and space in your music, the results are often better. That to me is the sign of musical maturity. Can something more complex be equally good? Yes, but Prince was working within a pop/funk/rock context, he played to his strengths. Rhythm, a memorable hook and repetition are absolutely key.

I mean he has wrote some killer songs to be fair. When Doves Cry, Manic Monday, Nothing Compared To You, 1999. Music is subjective at the end of the day so no one person is gonna like the same thing. He did have mass appeal though and there's that

@@whipchorus3726 Leaving room and space is great, yes, like Jeff Beck's phrasing or the groove of hip hop and RnB. But outside of the visual presentation and cool lyrics, there's nothing exciting about Prince's music. His limited singing floats between basically just talking, kind of like Frank Zappa, and singing in a very limited range of about less than half an octave. It's very superficial pop music, but presented in a sophisticated manner because the lyrics are very clever and meaningful. That's why I said it's just fluff. A cool 80s fashion show with poetry on top. But musically there's no substance to it.
@danielbentley71172 жыл бұрын
@@john-j1b1u His falsetto was weak and his songwriting was boring. Good showman and lyricist though.
