Lmao same 😂😂😂 jewelery artist since I was in grade school and ever after, but only tried lampwork beads and was frustrated by them always cooling too fast and breaking (hadn't yet heard of vermiculite). Love the accessibility of this technique! But I also just stayed punch needle and miniatures, so I'll wait a bit before starting this (autumn?).

Very pretty! I saved broken bottles, jars, and glass for a few years thinking I would put the pieces in a rock tumbler and wire-wrap them, but this is so much more beautiful without being unaffordable or difficult (I accept the fiddly bits of the procedure). Thank you for this technique. Brilliant

If you wet your stone it is much smother . I use a nail file it works well, too. But I really recomend a mask! You are working with fibres and dust you don't want in your body. Importand for newbies...when you get the killn out of the microwave never use just one hand, don't touch the hole, put the killn on some kind of stone or something fire save (I use a marble plate what was once a cheese plate, a tile will work as well!) and let the killn cool down befor open, the glas may crack otherwise. It is very nice and very adictive to work with the microwave killn.

This is really cool. ♥️♥️♥️ Years ago, when I first saw a video about microwave kilns, the person was fusing dichroic glass. It was really, really, pretty with metallic flashes. ❓❓Have you ever used dichroic glass? I was also wondering do you have a dedicated microwave that you use only for your kiln? I would think you'd need a separate microwave for fusing rather than use the microwave that you use to cook your food but I could be mistaken although if it produces fumes, harmful or not, I think I would want a separate microwave for this craft. Thanks for sharing this info. It really looks like it would be lots of fun.😊
@UpcycleDesignLab13 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. I have only used recycled glass so far in my kiln. As far as having a dedicated microwave that is certainly a personal choice. If you have the space for it that's great.

Love this video! Been wanting to use my micro kiln. Thank you for this tutorial. 🙏🏽 Question: May be a stupid question🤦🏻♀️…Can you put wire in between the glass parts to make the opening or will the wire melt? Much appreciated with any info.

Hi thanks for watching. I haven't tried this mostly because I am afraid to put metal in my microwave but if I had to guess I would say the metal would melt. Hope that helps.
@emilyrln8 күн бұрын
Ooh, could you embed metal foil or sand? I have some black iron-bearing sand I collected years ago that might be really cool as a gradient effect… could do it on the top if it interferes with the bond between the pieces.

Sorry but I don't know anything about that. I would be concerned about damaging the microwave with any metal.

@cayenigma14 күн бұрын
The process will cause some gas to escape the glass, the different colors are made of different elements, some of them toxic. You do not want to use the same micro for food.
@UpcycleDesignLab13 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. I get asked a lot about whether or not you need a dedicated microwave and in the end it comes down to what you are most comfortable with. I am certainly not a chemistry expert but here is what I can tell you. My first kiln came with instructions that said to clean the microwave thoroughly before and after use. My second kiln said it was not recommend to use the same microwave that you cook in. I only have one microwave at this time. As far as gases being released from the glass if you are concerned about it. That would be a ventilation issue no matter what microwave you use but it is my impression that as glass fuses it is primarily a physical not a chemical process. I hope this helped and I am sorry that I don't have a definitive answer for you.

As a ?late 60's/early 70's trend that reemerged in the early 90's, we called this style "tin cup" when done with much smaller beads. The ghosts of carpal tunnel past still twinge when I think of the hours I spent feeding handfuls of tiny (2-3mm) beads down spools of 25ga silver wire, then snipping /rolling them into yards & yards of necklaces, bracelets, & earrings. However, these come out to be a much more convenient size...

For the $50 dollars worth of supplies to make these beads you can get 20-30 strands or bags of beads that are much nicer and don't take 2 hours of time for 2 beads at a time.
