Lin Manuel is a singular talent and a just a downright pure soul. Everything he does you know comes from the heart. He has absolutely gone out of his way to promote inclusivity in all of his projects. Is colorism real? Yes. Did In the Heights include afro latinos of all colors? Yes. It's representation might not be perfect but what is? It's still a step forward in the right direction. This movie did not deserve to be called out in this way when it is the one time latinos finally had to come together and celebrate each other.

I love the quote his writer said and it's the heart of why it seems like everyone is going at LMM a bit more than when it happens in other instances. So many people adore and respect him that they feel that if they bring their concerns about his work to him, he'll actually acknowledge the criticism and try to work on making the best product in the future. Not because he is forced to do so, but because we all know he *wants* to do so.

@@dee_dee_place I get what you're saying but...dark-skinned Latinas ppl are still Latinas. They're not just a sub-group...they ARE the group. You shouldn't have to "fan out" to cover them, b/c they aren't some other group of minorities outside of 'regular' Latinas. They ARE the regular Latinas. It's annoying to feel like just b/c you have darker skin and less Euro-centric features it makes you somehow less of a Latina or different from "ordinary" Latinas. I haven't seen "In The Heights" yet. I did see "Hamilton". My niece played a documentary of the making of "Hamilton" the morning we were going to see it. It explained the reason different musical genres were used, which gave me a better understanding of what I was about to see. Washington & the beginning part of Burr was in jazz while the rest of the cast & the ending part of Burr was in hip hop. When I saw the musical, I didn't take note of what ethnicity the cast was, I took note of what they were saying & doing. I was floored by the energy the cast exuded through the whole musical, & I seriously learned some American History I wasn't taught in school. It was by far, THE BEST PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN ON BROADWAY. Everyone involved in Hamilton's production should be proud of what they did... MULTI BRAVO, TO ALL!

Bigger companies don't get passes, stop. The same people who have problems with this also have had problems with colorism in Hollywood for decades. Man wrote a musical about a community that's like 75% dark skinned afro latines and cast mostly lightskinned latines. Ya don't need to look for it - its right there. This isn't looking for something to criticize, he actively took out who he claimed to represent, or at the very least didn't speak up when it was done. It took more effort to exclude darker people than to accurately represent Washington Heights.

You don’t foresee that that is going to be an issue, because it wasn’t an issue 10 years ago. The original Broadway cast had no “Afro Latinos” in it either and the “lack of representation” was NEVER raised as an issue, on the contrary. Time has passed by and people are demanding more… As a Latina, I’ve never identified other Latinos by the color of their skin, they are Latinos, period. So this is something that I think I will have to consider in the future. I don’t like it (because identifying people by the color of their skin is just silly and pretty much an American thing), but it is what it is.

At first I didn't understand the criticism, but then I found out that the actual neighborhood he said he wanted to show the world is majority dark Afro-Latina. Then he missed the mark and I can see where the people in that area would feel their culture and lifestyle were ripped off. I can imagine being excited because you're going to see your life on screen but then what you see is the same thing that you've always faced - colorism that works against dark people being included IN THEIR OWN STORY!

And btw…do you think that Hamilton was well represented? I mean…the story itself is about the founding fathers, you know, white people. As a Latina I felt very well represented with this movie, just because I am a Latina. Because Latino is an ethnicity not a race. More Africans were kidnapped and enslaved in South America than in North America 500 years ago. There are more black people and mixed people in Latin America. Yet most Latino representation in media is light or white skin. Rarely black people in leading roles. So it goes to show how antiblackness and colorism is still a thing.

This is heart breaking. I believe all of the negative criticism he/the movie is receiving is going to lead to even less Latine representation of any kind. Production companies are probably thinking right now, "Well if Lin-Manuel Miranda can't get it right, why even bother. Let's just keep churning out the same White-Eurocentric stories and keep casting the same White-Eurocentric actors because it's guaranteed money."

It’s wokeness gone too far. The people making criticism are the one that find racism in everything and have been taught to think they are a victim. I’m not an Afro Latina… but the latinx community felt excluded. As him being the storyteller (a little of which we have in America) they probably felt bad he didn’t include that part of the world in his story. In the heights is his vision and he represented his story greatly. I will not say Afro latinas shouldn’t have a certain way to feel at all because to be excluded is a terrible feeling. When you think of how they come forth with their feelings, it shouldn’t be so opposed. He obviously has no hate in him… nothing to be worried about because he only produces art and experience. He only produces beauty and art in his work, no hate. The lack of representation of Afro latinx is obvious but I think it takes away from what he has made when in reality, we don’t get anything like this piece of art. When a person makes art it should be opposite. I understand lack of rep. Art like this comes so little and I think we’re lucky to find something that’s is highly ethnic represented, show a certain type of representation (which is low in America) not to take away from the hurt Afro latinx feel…. Lin Manuel is one in a million, literally, and he’s made something so beautiful come to life… successfully.

In my opinion, his work puts Latinos in the limelight and it’s a shame other Latinos can find away to detract from that. Latinos should be supportive of other Latinos. Because this feels kind of like an…I’m sorry IF you were offended by something I said moment. Because in reality it seems like this man did what basically other writers and producers do. You’re not in their works because you’re not in their minds. Perhaps that will change one day. Perhaps one of the things we can do today is put financing in the hands of more Afro writers.
