Lin Manuel Miranda is a good example for kids in middle and high school to stop trying to be someone else, and just participate and engage in even what they think are nerdy activities. I’m probably not a theatre geek, but as an adult looking back, I could have participated more if I wasn’t so worried about fitting in.

The weekend after Bruno hit No. 1, I was listening to either American Routes or my local jazz station. I heard a song in C minor with a very similar beat to Bruno, and I hooked onto a point where I figured the piece would do the harmonic progression underpinning the refrain. I actually started singing, “We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no.” It was remarkable not because I had it in my head, but that I was harmonically spot-on with a piece that, if I had heard more of it, was probably only coincidentally similar.
