Not sure how anyone isn't moved by this movie. I get chills everytime I see Lincoln walking down the hallway in his top hat near the end of the film. I tear up every time I see Lincoln lying in the bed after being shot. Wonderful film. Prime example of an acting clinic put on display by so many wonderful actors.

I agree. As pretentious as this may sound, there was not enough life in this movie. It might as well have been a movie about passing any other controversial amendment. I mean, maybe not quite since the 13th amendment rocked the nation to it's core...but you get my point.

It is riveting. Definitely! It didn't move you? You're one cold soul. I was glued to every word spoken in this movie. The review from the guys who rated it 7.and 7.5 did not get the broader perspective of the political upheavals of the time coupled with Lincoln's role as commander in chief burdened by the horrors of the civil war. I rate it a perfect 10!!!!!!

They all are part of that 91%. Well other than Matt since he works for Rotten Tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can be a mixed bag as well. The biggest misconception that people have about the rotten tomato meter is that it only indicates the proportion of critics that like the film enough to recommend it to others. It is not a gauge of how much they really like the film. For all we know more of them were maybe leaning towards the middle rather than loving the film.

Anyone who doubts that the south seceded over slavery should read the articles of secession. Click on the links to the full documents if available, and search for "slave". The war was over secession and slavery. Not taxes and tariffs. Unless you think you know better than the men who waged it.
@archer194910 жыл бұрын
"I didn't like 'cause they was talking too fancy. Duh......" Idiots. And Slavery may not have been the ONLY cause for secession, but it was THE reason that the secessionists were not willing to compromise on. Modern day revisionist Lost Causers fail to mention that in EVERY SINGLE secessionist declaration from the rebelling States, Federal interference in spreading Slavery was specifically mentioned as a primary mover in their reasoning. Let's face it, "States Rights", with these people, then as today, basically boils down to, "No uppity city slicker is gonna tell us how we can treat OUR brown people. They are ours to do as we see fit."
@Jokkkkke10 жыл бұрын
I'm usually on the side of revisionists on subjects like Mao, Stalin, and I'm post-revisionist when it comes to the Cold War, but you're pretty much right when it comes to the origins of the civil war. Though, you should remember why confederate soldiers were fighting. Considering most weren't wealthy plantation owners, its hard to argue that they fought for slavery. They might've supported it, but that wasn't why they fought.

***** First of all, your naming fascists now. If I were a communist, I would certainly not support leaders like Hitler. Second of all, I never said I support 'the idea' as you say (I suppose the idea you are referring to is communism). When you actually decide to read what I had written previously you will discover that I am neither a communist nor a fascist. In fact, I was talking about historiography, not politics. The movie was to sanitized and staid for my tastes, and it placed Lincoln the man on a near messianic level. He was a man of great accomplishments--maybe the greatest President--but he was not the faultless figure portrayed in this picture. Terrific performances from Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee-Jones carry the flick, but Sally Field's face kept taking me out of it.

The public speeches of that time were far more ornate and Shakespearean sounding than the everyday speech of ordinary people. This is one of the things that bugged me about Deadwood. That pretty sort of speech was reserved for public speaking and the written word. Everyday speech was just normal speech.

In this instance, its not so much hating on Christie. But she comes across as extremely smug and almost sophomorically dismissive. I agree with Ben -- who is probably the only real legitimate "critic" here in terms of really understanding film on a multitude of levels that I don't think the other reviewers have a handle on. I wept watching this film. I watch football, I consider myself as "manly" as Cenk -- and I ain't afraid to admit it -- I was moved beyond reason. Christie's kinda scary.

Agreed trailer isn't representative of film, but I'd rather have an excellent film like this be better than the trailer, than have a trailer where all the good stuff is in the trailer but the movie itself is crap. This film was excellent though they should've cut almost everything after the amendment was voted for. I groaned at the obvious foreshadowing of Lincoln's death and the intended shocker scene with TLJ's character.

However, state's rights are not paramount the rights of all people and the union. No one who respects civil liberties is upset about Colorado legalizing pot, but a lot of us our upset about state's that are trying to deprive women of the right to obtain a safe abortion, or back during the Civil War when the Confederacy argued their right to have slaves was paramount over the union wanting to abolish it. Ultimately, the union comes first, and states rights are not superior - thus the Civil War.

I wanted to like this so much, but it was a little too Spielbergian. Don't get me wrong, I like a great deal of Spielberg's catalog (I even liked WAR OF THE WORLDS), but LINCOLN included a few too many of his overly-dramatic and artificially saccharine touches that make me roll my eyes. Also, I find Kaminski's style of lighting in their recent collaborations to be more of distraction than and interesting artistic choice. Giving your "good" characters a literal halo is a little overbearing.
@ChuckinCho12 жыл бұрын
They didn't secede over slavery. It was over the heavy taxing of crop exports. The whole country, including the north was dependent on slave labor in the southern states. They didn't even consider freeing the slaves until the confederacy was practically beaten. Northern states still kept slaves. And it never really ended in the whole country until after the industrial revolution. Most blacks had no education and were basically forced back on the farm to sustain themselves with pitiful wages.

There's a fine line between informative and boring. You don't spent a day out of your weekend as an adult to learn history. As nice a concept it is, its just isnt realistic. Calling someone dull or a sheep or whatever else for preferring action movies is wrong, and at the very least insulting.

The Civil War was fought over the south seceding, NOT SLAVERY. The southern states did not try to secede over the abolition of slavery as the movie portrayed. The notion of freeing the slaves wasn't considered until the very end of the war. The Union was completely dependent on the southern crop exports and slave labor. The south seperated from the union because they were making most of the countries wealth and were being unfairly milked for their profits. This movie was pure revionist history.
@Sweetbeariesart12 жыл бұрын
It seems like recently there is a push to give Confederate history equal glory, and I have to disagree. A person arguing that Lincoln is a traitor probably wants the Confederate flag. Licoln is one of the greatest presidents we had because he preserved the union, and exemplified once and for all it comes above states rights. This pro-Confederacy arguments are about as silly as people arguing in favor of Napoleon's reign.
