Lincoln Navigator - Stuck ignition key and lift gate

Lincoln navigator 2006. Key stuck in ignition. Will come out when battery disconnected. Lift gate stopped working at same time. Believe that car does not sense it is in park. Acts like if the car is in neutral or in gear, in that if you turn the car off in neutral or in gear, the key wont come out of the ignition and the liftgate wont open either. The shifter is not stuck, rear hatch window opens and the car drives normally.
----------Initial algorithm-------
1. Remove the trim panel from around the floor shifter. Unplug the 6-terminal Gray connector from the floor shifter. It should be a pigtail connector right next to the shifter. If the key can be removed with the connector unplugged, and there are no shorts in the connector, replace the floor shifter.
2. If the key still cannot be removed with the shifter connector unplugged, remove fuse 102 from the interior fuse box. If the key can then be removed, check the Yellow wire that runs from the ignition switch key removal inhibit solenoid to the floor shifter for a short to ground.
3. If the key still cannot be removed with fuse 102 removed, the problem is either a failed ignition lock cylinder or a mechanically stuck key removal inhibit solenoid in the ignition switch.

Your 100 % correct that area is the problem on all fords...I have a Lincoln like yours and a 94 Explosion xlt and it is starting to leak.. I cant believe they get away for doing this crap

Btw.. why havent all us Ford owners having this problem, all contacted Ford Motors for answers and refunds for all the money we've spent on trying to repair these vehicles at the dealership?! I think I'll give Ford a call tomorrow and ask why they've not issued a recall for the leaking windshield. My husbands 01 F150 does the same thing when it rains... It causes major electrical issues!!

Your video really helps because I have a 2003 Lincoln and same thing happen because it had rained severely a couple of days prior. Save me the trouble of taking apart all the extra stuff when all I did was removed fuse 102 and my key was out the ignition. Then a couple of days later I'm guessing whatever was wet and have dried out, key wasn't getting stuck any more with the fuse back in. Now, just have to figure out where the water is coming in from since it will be raining again and going to have the same issue. Thx!

Thank you sir 🙏! After it raining the past few days I noticed a leak on the drivers side of my 06 Navigator and the SAME EXACT 3 ISSUES occurred. I’m going to check that connector now! Questions please: 1- were u able to find out if the leak came from the windshield or moonroof? 2-what’s ur MPG? Mine is 9-10mpg and I’ve done everything Plus! Note: I can literally see the gas gauge dropping after going up steep hills it won’t shift up from 1st and the RPMs stay above 2000 until I top and put it in park. Thanks again! AE Seattle.

Rain is a big issue with the top of the hood there are two dips on the top and yes they leak down into the windshield into the side panels both sides

Another bad problem is the junction boxes go bad on the right side of the door...you end up replacing the junction box

Windshield probably not leaking. There are drain holes on each inside corner of moon roof. The front left one is probably blocked allowing water that comes in around moonroof edge to run down inside A pillar and by the connector. There are separate videos on how to clear those drains.

Thanks for the info. My 2006 Nav is doing exact same thing and when I pulled fuse 102 the key would release but like you pointed out how do you trace a short in a yellow wire that is taped up, winds around everywhere. Haven't done your procedure yet but hopefully its the same problem. Thanks for the tip much appreciated.

Just curious, when you had this problem did the Park light next to the shifter light up Red when you had it in park? mIne doesn't light up....

After watching this vid I looked at my left side. Oh my lord, I wish I could put a photo here. I have a bit of rust and right here you can see that someone has been in this side and there are electric wires that have been cheaply wrapped with black tape. Oh, it makes me so mad because I know the lady who I bought the SUV from.

could this make it not crank . i put a new starter on and nothing found stuff about fuse box but then i saw this and my driver side floor bored was soaked under my plastic mat

Antony C I'm not sure if that this would fix your cranking issue. However, I would try doing what I instructed in the video and look to see if there are any other connectors that might be affected by the moisture.

I have an 05 and there is a wiring harness on the right side bottom of engine that, if not put back in place after an o2 sensor replacement, can droop down onto the exhaust and short out the fuse. I think it's #4 in the passenger compartment. The harness is the transmission harness. That did it for me, hope this helps. Had to repair the wires then put the retainer back on the bolt.
