LINDA EDER! GREAT VOCALIST! Perhaps the best female vocalist of our current generation! This is a classic Sinatra song and Linda sang it true to the original!

Linda dedicated Vienna to me when she performed in Chicago. My family and I ran into her with her musical director later that evening in a restaurant. And I thanker her. She was as beautiful and engaging as a person as she was on stage. Linda is not an uppidy diva - she is down-to-earth as a lady and heavenly as a singer and entertainer that soars above the rest. What a voice!!!!!!

Her version is much closer to the Peter Allen version - the original composer. Great singer and version.

@Yakrac so true! - I guess she wasn't as ambitious as the others - she put a lot of her effort and time into waiting for Jekyll and Hyde to come to Broadway - and she didn't even garner a Tony nomination -robbery! . She just never found another vehicle for her talents - but she is one of the best of all time!

I had never heard this song until Linda sang it on Star Search (way back when!), I thought it was perfect and beautiful, I watch the reruns of Linda on Star Search on occasion (and I really wish she would have included most of her Star Search songs - full length - on albums afterwards, I loved her versions more than most). Today I decided I wanted to hear the full song and listened to Frank Sinatra's, Carol Bayer Sayer's, and Peter Allen's individual versions - and really didn't like them. I know on Star Search the performers had to sing much shortened versions - but I fell in love with (and expected) Linda'a version, aka the melody of the lyrics (we wanted it all, we reached for the sky, etc) where she stayed high and came down, rather than how everyone else did it. There were many such changes. I'm not a musician and don't know the right words to use but I hope that makes sense. Peter Allen, towards the middle to end of his song was closer to Linda. It's amazing how just a few simple note/chord changes make such a shift in how one enjoys a song. I would just love to hear Linda sing this entire song, all lyrics, as she did on Star Search - including the dramatic ascension at the end. I wonder on Star Search, who did the arrangements - the singer or that cute pianist at the time (wasn't he Joey something?) or someone else. I didn't watch American Idol much (2 seasons total, it was a popularity contest, not a talent show of capability) but didn't those contestants do their own arrangements?

And just for the record - I am the one who introduced you (Dennis) to this amazing singer and Star search when I lived on EDISON st. I no longer have my Linda Eder VHS tapes of Linda on Star search and it's too bad. Still is one of my all time favorite singers and a treat to hear live in concert ! (Thank you for that Dennis !)

Unless you are singing your own original song (lyrics/music), you are subject to comparison with another singer's interpretation. In Linda's case, whether it's Sinatra, Streisand or anyone else, she 'owns' each & every song she sings.

This was Star Search! The artists didn't really have much of a say other than the song selection itself (and that was limited to some degree). They were given 2 minutes and pushed to BELT IT OUT. The arrangemets they were given often called for breaking the flow to belt out a soaring note that really did not fit. that's 80's over the top drama for you. She actually was one of the few artists who managed to preserve the integrity of the song amid the shrieks.

@123Rockchild Sinatra's is a more sedated & slow version. Listen to Peter Allen's, the composer. Linda Eders version is much closer to Allen's and in my opinion, nicer.

LINDA EDER. Linda sang this song "You and Me, We Wanted It All beautifully. This is a song that Frank Sinatra recorded and is one of my favorites. Linda performed it true to Frank's classic version. Linda has great vocal ability and really compares favorably with the best female vocalists of our time. That includes Barbra Streisand!

Pity the performer who had to follow THAT !!!!!

This would song would sound a lot better if she toned it down a bit. She should listen to the way Sinatra sings it. His version sounds way better.

And had she sung it Frank Sinatra style she would not have won! You have to take into consideration it’s a singing competition where you are not established as an artist. You’re vying to be against worthy competitors. You only have 2 minutes to take a classic song, make it your own, and show what your voice can do.
